Is Jesus in the Old Testament?

Yes, Jesus is in the Old Testament. While he does not take on human nature until he is conceived by the Holy Spirit in the body of the Virgin Mary, the entire story points forward to him.

Throughout its pages, we find promises of a Savior, detailed prophecies that predict his coming, and symbols that foreshadow his role as Redeemer.

  2. Second, as shadows—symbolic events and figures, such as the Passover lamb and King David, which point forward to his mission and character.

Through faith in Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross, we receive spiritual healing and eternal life.

The Sacrificial System

The sacrificial system in Leviticus points to Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice. Animals were offered to atone for sin, but these were temporary and had to be repeated. Jesus, the perfect Lamb, paid the price by sacrificing himself on the cross, removing sin and restoring humanity’s relationship with God. Hebrews 9 emphasizes that his sacrifice was final and sufficient, achieving what no animal sacrifice could.

Appearances of Jesus in the Old Testament

Jesus appears often in the Old Testament. Long before his birth in Bethlehem, we find him in Old Testament passages, foreshadowing his role as Savior.

These appearances, known as Christophanies, are visible manifestations of Christ before his incarnation. While the Old Testament doesn’t explicitly identify these figures as the preincarnate Son, Christians have traditionally understood certain divine appearances as encounters with Christ, the Son of God, the eternal Logos, the second person of the Trinity. One example is the Angel of the Lord, who speaks and acts as God and accepts worship. Here are some moments we believe show Jesus in the Old Testament Scripture.

Christophanies

Christophanies are remarkable moments when Jesus is thought to have shown himself in visible form.

  • The Commander of the Lord’s Army (Joshua 5:13–15)
    Before the battle of Jericho, Joshua encountered a mysterious figure who identified himself as the commander of the Lord’s army. Joshua bowed in worship and listened as he was told to remove his sandals, for he stood on holy ground—echoing Moses’s encounter at the burning bush. Many Christians see this as the preincarnate Christ leading his people into victory.
  • The Fourth Man in the Fiery Furnace (Daniel 3)
    When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into a blazing furnace for refusing to worship an idol, King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished to see four men walking unharmed in the fire. The fourth, he said, looked “like a son of the gods.” Christians interpret this as a preincarnate appearance of Christ protecting his faithful followers.
  • The Man Wrestling with Jacob (Genesis 32:22–32)
    Jacob wrestled all night with a man he later realized was divine. “I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” The figure blessed Jacob and renamed him Israel, marking his unique role in God’s plan. Many believe this was the preincarnate Christ.

The Angel of the Lord

The Angel of the Lord is another amazing way many believe that Jesus appears in the Old Testament. These encounters go beyond other angelic appearances—this figure speaks with divine authority, identifies as God, and even accepts worship.

  • Appearing to Hagar (Genesis 16)
    The Angel of the Lord found Hagar in the wilderness and promised to multiply her descendants. Moved by this encounter, Hagar recognized him as “the God who sees me.”
  • Stopping Abraham from Sacrificing Isaac (Genesis 22)
    When Abraham obeyed God’s command to offer Isaac as a sacrifice, the Angel of the Lord intervened, stopping him and providing a ram in the boy’s place. The Angel also reiterated God’s covenant promises to Abraham.
  • The Burning Bush (Exodus 3)
    God called Moses from a burning bush, with the Angel of the Lord present in the flames. Moses was told to remove his sandals, for the ground was holy. The voice identified itself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, declaring “I AM WHO I AM.”
  • Calling Gideon (Judges 6)
    The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, calling him to deliver Israel from their enemies. Gideon’s offering was consumed by fire, and he realized he had seen God.
  • Announcing Samson’s Birth (Judges 13)
    The Angel of the Lord appeared to Samson’s parents, announcing his birth and his future as a deliverer for Israel. When he ascended in the flame of their offering, Samson’s father said, “We have seen God!”

Jesus the Christ: Past, Present, and Future

Where is Jesus in the Old Testament? Everywhere—in prophecies, symbols, and appearances that point to God’s ultimate plan for salvation.

In the past, when he came in human form, he fulfilled the law perfectly, taught with divine wisdom, and performed miracles. His sacrificial death paid for our sins, his resurrection conquered death, and he offers eternal life to everyone who trusts in him.

Today, Jesus is our living and reigning Savior. He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us as our King and High Priest. Through the Holy Spirit, he empowers and guides the Church, bringing hope and transformation to lives everywhere.

In the future, Jesus will return as King to complete God’s plan—judge the world with justice, defeat all evil, and make all things new. God’s redeemed will spend eternity in a restored creation, free from sin and suffering, living in his perfect presence.

The primary mission of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST, seen in figure 1) is to investigate the early history of the universe. Of particular interest to researchers is the period known as the “cosmic dawn,” when starlight first illuminated the universe. This aptly named era extends from 0.2 billion to 1.2 billion years after the cosmic origin event.

To observe the cosmic dawn, astronomers must look many billions of light-years away. (Remember: distance means time, due to the finite velocity of light. That is, the farther away we look, the farther back in time we see the condition of the universe. Also keep in mind that due to the expansion of the universe, the most distant objects are moving away from us the most rapidly.) The visible light of objects at distances corresponding to the cosmic dawn era (12.6–13.6 billion light-years away), will be shifted into the infrared segment of the electromagnetic spectrum. For this reason, astronomers designed the JWST to detect infrared radiation. 

Bright Early Galaxies
One of the big surprises for astronomers using the JWST was to observe several bright galaxies in the first billion years of cosmic history—galaxies with ultraviolet luminosities as much as ten times brighter than what standard big bang models would seem to allow.1 Most big bang models had predicted that galaxies as ultraviolet bright as these would take more than a few hundred million years to form. However, this prediction relied on a lack of understanding about how early galaxies formed.

As reported in Today’s New Reason to Believe, posted on January 1, 2024, a team of astronomers has solved the problem of these early ultraviolet bright galaxies.2 The solution came from evidence confirming that star formation was just as “stochastic,” or “bursty,” during the universe’s first billion years as during the subsequent 12.8 billion years.

GN-z11 Galaxy
Even before the launch of the JWST, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) allowed astronomers to observe a cosmic dawn galaxy, GN-z11 (aka GNS-JD2, seen in figure 2). It appeared much brighter than anticipated at visible wavelengths, despite being the most distant galaxy researchers had yet discovered.

A team of eighteen astronomers, using the HST’s grism spectroscopy, measured GN-z11’s redshift to be 11.1.3 This redshift measure implied that GN-z11 is 13.41 billion light-years from Earth, a distance that corresponds with a mere 380 million years after the cosmic origin event. GN-z11 is the most highly redshifted (thus, most distant) galaxy spectroscopically confirmed using the HST.

A team of eight astronomers led by James Baldwin measured the effective diameter of GN-z11. Based on images from the HST CANDELS survey and additional observations,4 they determined the half-light diameter (the distance from the galactic core to the point where its luminosity is reduced by half) of GN-z11 to be about 500 light-years, a determination consistent with later measurements made using the JWST.5 At this relatively small size and high luminosity, GN-z11 was confirmed to be the brightest galaxy yet known at a distance greater than 13.3 billion light-years, in the early part of the cosmic dawn. For this reason, GN-z11 became a prime target for investigation by the JWST.  

In September 2023, a team of sixty-three astronomers led by Andrew Bunker used the near-infrared spectrometer on board the JWST to make a more precise measurement of GN-z11’s redshift,6 which turned out to be 10.603. This measurement tells us that GN-z11 is 13.38 billion light-years from Earth. At this distance, GN-z11 appears to have formed 410 million years after the first moment of cosmic creation. This finding is astounding, given that star formation is not even possible until the universe is at least 200 million years old.

In fact, GN-z11 is not the only exceptionally luminous galaxy found in the cosmic dawn. Images taken by the JWST reveal several dozen others. The discovery of such galaxies has become a regular theme for the JWST, and this theme has spawned numerous articles in the popular media and on the web—many claiming that the big bang model needs major revision and/or that scientists are on the verge of discovering some new physics. 

Why Such Brightness?
While no astronomer whose work appears in peer-reviewed astrophysical literature has called for an abandonment or replacement of big bang models, a few are advocating for “a reexamination of the theoretical landscape of galaxy formation at the cosmic dawn.”7 To determine whether a reexamination is necessary, a team of thirty-six astronomers led by Cambridge University’s Roberto Maiolino undertook a detailed probe of GN-z11. 

Using both the near-infrared spectrometer (NIRSpec) and the near-infrared camera (NIRCam) on board the JWST,8Maiolino’s team discovered a huge clump of gas in the galactic halo, about 7,800 light-years from the GN-z11 core. The camera revealed that this clump was so powerfully illuminated by stars in the core that its gas had been ionized. The spectrometer additionally revealed the elemental composition of the clump: hydrogen and helium, and no elements heavier than helium.

The lack of any elements heavier than helium in the gas clump provided, for the first time, direct evidence that aligned with a major prediction of big bang models. According to these models, the universe begins infinitesimally small, nearly infinitely hot, and with just one element—hydrogen. Between three and four minutes after the cosmic beginning, the expanding and cooling universe passes through the temperature window at which hydrogen fuses into helium. About a quarter of the primordial hydrogen (by mass) becomes fused into helium, along with a trace amount of lithium. All other elements are manufactured later in the nuclear furnaces of future stars. Maiolino’s team was the first ever to see a gas cloud that contained only the elements produced in the initial “bang.”

To explain the level of ionization observed in the gas clump, Maiolino and his colleagues calculated that the combined luminosity of the stars illuminating the gas clump was equivalent to at least 20 trillion times our Sun’s luminosity. This high luminosity can be explained only if the stars in GN-z11’s central region are extremely massive. Based on the spectra of the gas clump, the team was able to determine that the ionizing radiation came from stars in GN-z11’s central region but not from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the core. 

In the context of big bang modeling, astronomers have developed a range of predictions for the mass of the universe’s first stars—stars that begin their nuclear burning with 75% hydrogen, 25% helium, and a trace amount of lithium.9 These estimates range from 1–100 solar masses, 1–500 solar masses, and 50–500 solar masses, with the slight possibility that some of these first stars could be as massive as 1,000 solar masses.

The gas clump spectra taken by the NIRSpec show that the stars illuminating the gas clump are, indeed, the universe’s first-formed stars. Further, the spectra show that these stars are predominantly in the 50–500 solar masses category, with a significant fraction greater than 500 solar masses.

The luminosity of a star rises exponentially (to the 3.9 power) with its mass. A star with a mass 200 times the Sun’s mass will be ~1,600,000,000 times brighter than the Sun. A star 500 times more massive than the Sun will be about 6,000,000,000 times brighter! On this basis, we can determine that even if the GN-z11 central region contains only 20,000 stars, the light from those stars would be more than sufficient to illuminate the gas clump to the degree that Maiolino and his colleagues observed. Given that all big bang models predict the formation of 20,000+ metal-free stars (stars with no elements heavier than helium other than a trace amount of lithium) in multiple galaxies during the cosmic dawn, the population of bright galaxies observed by the JWST in no way poses a challenge to big bang creation models. 

Early Supermassive Black Holes
Maiolino and his team also found a second source of luminosity in GN-z11.10 They observed an extremely dense flow of gas into the nucleus of GNz-11. In this gas they detected ionized elements that clearly signify the existence of a giant black hole there, one that is aggressively accreting matter. They also observed powerful radiation spewing from the accretion disk surrounding the black hole. These observations enabled the team to calculate the mass of the black hole residing in GN-z11’s nucleus. That mass measures two million times our Sun’s mass. Thus, the nuclear black hole in GN-z11 falls into the “supermassive” category. (Astronomers classify any black hole more massive than one million solar masses as a supermassive black hole, or SMBH).

The event horizon around a black hole is a location at which the black hole’s gravitational attraction is so strong that not even light can escape it. Consequently, everything inside the event horizon appears black, while just outside the event horizon, matter is being converted into energy with 10–42% efficiency—the highest efficiency of any source in the universe. By comparison, this efficiency is 150–600 times greater than that of matter-to-energy conversion in the Sun’s nuclear fusion furnace. The brightest sources in the universe are the accretion disks just outside the event horizons of SMBHs (see figure 3).

The SMBH in GN-z11 is the most distant SMBH discovered to date. The presence of this ravenous SMBH and the brightness of first-formed stars in GN-z11 explain its luminosity, which is entirely consistent with the standard ΛCDM big bang creation model (where Λ stands for dark energy—the primary component of the universe—and CDM for cold dark matter—the second most dominant component of the universe).

Maiolino and his colleagues have confirmed that the first stars to form in the universe are likely very massive. They have also demonstrated that a dense clump of very massive stars in a cosmic dawn galaxy has a high probability of forming an SMBH. Therefore, it is not surprising that astronomers will find many bright cosmic dawn galaxies. The claim that the big bang model needs a major revision or points to new physics now appears to be nullified.  

One More Gift from the JWST
A fundamental prediction of all big bang models is the existence of three distinct star populations. Astronomers refer to stars formed during the most recent five billion years as Population I stars. These stars are characterized by a high abundance of elements heavier than lithium. Why? Because they formed from the ashes of stars that formed and burned up before these younger stars existed. Our Sun, for example, is a Population I star. 

Stars older than Population I stars contain fewer heavy elements because they formed from the ashes of stars that formed and burned up at earlier times in cosmic history. The earlier in cosmic history, the lower the abundance of elements heavier than lithium available in interstellar space. Astronomers call these stars Population II stars. Most globular cluster stars and most stars in the halos of galaxies are Population II stars. 

Population III stars are those that formed from the universe’s primordial gas: hydrogen, helium, and a trace amount of lithium. Astronomers had previously detected low-mass Population III stars in the halo of the Milky Way Galaxy.11 These stars did, indeed, form from the universe’s primordial gas; however, they took a very long time to fully form—hundreds of millions of years or more. Thus, before they began shining as nuclear-burning stars, their atmospheres had been polluted by the ashes of nearby very high-mass Population III stars, which had quickly burned up and exploded, sending their ashes into interstellar space.

Until now, though, astronomers have lacked the telescope power to detect these “metal-free” Population III stars or to detect the universe’s primordial gas. In fact, many astronomers have expressed doubt that the JWST possesses the necessary observing power to make such a detection. Maiolino’s team has now raised hopes that the JWST can make this detection. The team’s two papers end with a call for follow-up observations of GN-z11 to affirm their findings and to detect similar cosmic dawn galaxies. Given the importance of their findings, such observations likely will be forthcoming soon.

Philosophical/Theological Implications
For thousands of years, the Bible has stood alone in describing the fundamental features of the big bang.12 No other cosmic origin model has been subjected to as many independent, rigorous tests as the big bang.13 Thanks to the power of the JWST and the research efforts of Maiolino and his team, the big bang has passed yet another set of tests. Their success provides still greater evidence to support the biblical claim that a Causal Agent beyond space and time created our universe and exquisitely designed it so that billions of humans can reside on our planet and develop a technologically advanced civilization. Their success also confirms the Bible’s power to predict, accurately, future scientific discoveries. This power affirms the supernatural inspiration and accuracy of the Bible, with its assurance of God’s desire and capacity to redeem fallen (as in self-serving, self-exalting) humanity.14

What is a prophet?

I imagine that when asked this question, most people conjure up an image of a mysterious old man wearing a cloak who foretells future events. I also doubt that anyone would think that scientists wearing white lab coats would qualify as prophets, but in many respects they do. 

“How so?” you might ask.

The connection between biblical prophecy and science becomes more apparent when we examine how both prophets and scientists serve as arbiters of truth.

Biblical Prophets 
The biblical role of a prophet is more expansive than just functioning as a seer. It’s true that biblical prophets did foretell future events but, first and foremost, they spoke on behalf of God, admonishing and encouraging his people. In the Old Testament, prophets brought God’s Word to Israel and exhorted the Israelites to conform their lives to his will. 

But how were the people to know if a prophet truly spoke for God? They were instructed to test the prophet’s words and prognostications. If they didn’t match Scripture or come to pass, the prophet was considered a false prophet. But, if the prophet’s proclamations came to be, then he truly was God’s mouthpiece. 

Prophecies were also part of the early church and the idea of testing appears in the New Testament. Both the apostles Paul and John encouraged those in the early church to not just test prophecy (1 Thessalonians 5:20–22), but also scriptural teachings (Acts 17:11), and the spirits (1 John 4:1). 

In other words, testing serves an indispensable role for people of faith as they seek to discern truth.

Prophecy and Science
So, what’s the connection between biblical prophecy and science? Some scholars argue that the biblical ideal of testing influenced the development of the scientific method, contributing to the birth and flourishing of modern science in “Christianized” Western Europe. Others claim that the origin of the scientific method has a richer and more varied history that arose independent of Christian influences. Perhaps. Regardless, the biblical practice of validating spiritual claims through testing reflects the heart of the scientific enterprise and provides an important bridge between Christian faith practices and science. The biblical call to test spiritual claims aligns with the approach scientists use to evaluate scientific proposals about how the world works.

To understand the world and its processes, scientists formulate hypotheses, theories, and models. (I’m going to treat these as roughly synonymous terms.) Scientific proposals have consequences that lead to predictions about future scientific observations and experimental findings. If the predictions that flow from a scientific hypothesis, theory, or model are satisfied by future scientific insights, then the scientific claims associated with the model are regarded as valid. If not, then the theory is either discarded as false or revised to accommodate the new insights. 

Scientific Predictions
While the biblical prophets’ predictions focused only on future events, scientific predictions can be made retrospectively. The predictions that flow out of scientific hypotheses, theories, and models are logical entailments and consequences of these scientific ideas. This means that some scientific predictions—retrodictions, if you will—can be evaluated immediately, as soon as scientists advance their proposal based on what we already know. Testing doesn’t need to wait for future scientific investigations. 

Another way scientists refer to successful retrodictions is to say that a hypothesis, theory, or model accounts for the information we already know, or it explains the available data. So, when scientists make these types of statements, they are really saying that the theory makes successful retrodictions. 

Scientists as Prophets
Unlike biblical prophets who are labeled false prophets—and put to death—if their predictions aren’t realized, scientists celebrate when the predictions associated with scientific proposals come up short. Scientists are even applauded if they provide the means to overturn their own ideas. Ideally, scientists’ chief objective is to falsify their own models and invite others to do the same. If they can’t falsify the predictions that flow out of their model, it indicates that their theory has scientific merit.

Scientists prize failed predictions. These failures help scientists to abandon flawed ideas or force them to revise and refine those models showing promise. Each time, the scientific community moves a little closer to understanding the truth about the world. Those scientific proposals that withstand the rigors of testing (or those that can be salvaged by revising them) are regarded as approximating reality. Each iteration of scientific testing moves them closer to a truer understanding of the world. 

Science serves as a tool to discover truth, with scientific predictions functioning as a barometer for the credibility of scientific ideas. Likewise, testing the words of a prophet becomes the means available to Bible believers to determine if proclamations made on behalf of God are to be trusted. Again, testing becomes the means to uncover truth. When both spiritual and scientific claims are made, believers and scientists alike have an obligation to test them. It is unacceptable to receive either prophecy or scientific ideas on faith alone. 

The difference between established scientific and spiritual truths is that the former are discovered, and the latter are revealed. This means that scientifically discovered truths are provisional. On the other hand, confirmed spiritual truths are unchanging.

The Creation Accounts as a Type of “Biblical Prophecy”
The Old and New Testaments contain passages that speak about God’s work as Creator. Few theological experts would regard these passages as prophetic. The primary purpose of the creation passages is theological, declaring that God the Redeemer is also God the Creator, the maker of all things in the heavens and on the earth. Everything we see is his handiwork and has been made as he intended. A subset of these passages teaches that God made us, too, as human beings. We were made to bear his image, which grounds our unique relationship with God. 

So, while communicating theological truths, the creation accounts also give glimpses into the origin, history, and features of the universe, earth, life, and humanity. Today, questions of origins also fall into the domain of modern-day science. Scientists actively investigate questions about the origin, history, and features of the cosmos, our solar system, our planet, life, and humanity. Along the way, they propose hypotheses, theories, and models about each of these aspects of nature.

Because of the overlap between the creation accounts and the interests of many in the scientific community, it’s feasible to test the creation accounts in the same way that we would test scientific ideas. That is, are they credible in light of modern science? Yet, a growing number of scholars and laypeople alike question if the creation accounts have any connection to the discoveries of modern science. They often argue that the creation accounts were written in a prescientific age, with the author and the immediate audience possessing no inkling about the modern-day insights we possess, thanks to science. Accordingly, if anything, the creation accounts reflect the erroneous “science” of the ancient Near East (ANE). The Bible’s creation accounts, they assert, were shaped by ANE mythology and share much in common with these myths. If so, they are mythical, devoid of any historical or scientific content. Instead, they merely communicate theological truths. 

This perspective leaves little room for the divine inspiration of the biblical texts. What if the biblical authors who wrote the creation accounts were, indeed, inspired by the Holy Spirit? Wouldn’t it make sense that these passages were written in a way that would have been accessible to the original audience? Wouldn’t the texts describe the world in terms they could apprehend, yet, at the same time, convey historical and scientific concepts and ideas in ways that are true and that anticipate future scientific discoveries? 

If so, then it’s proper to regard the creation accounts as prescient, maybe even prophetic.

These claims about the creation passages may make some uncomfortable. Most people understand biblical prophecy to be centered around foretelling Israel’s future and the coming of the Messiah. Accordingly, some of these prophecies have already been fulfilled, and some have been partially fulfilled. Others have yet to be fulfilled. Because many prophecies have successfully transpired, Christians confidently trust that those unfulfilled prophecies will soon come to pass. 

A special group of prophecies have double fulfillment, meaning that they successfully foretell events close to the time the prophecy was delivered by the prophet and also anticipate events much further in the future. The idea that some prophecies will be fulfilled twice provides the basis to think that the creation accounts have a prophetic (already/not yet) nature to them—foretelling future scientific discoveries while communicating theological truths to the original audience. The creation accounts communicated to their original audience in terms they would understand, while at the same time they communicate to us today in terms that we understand.

Just as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy gives us confidence in Scripture and inspires hope that unfulfilled prophecies will soon transpire, testing the creation accounts for their scientific validity also has the potential to elevate our confidence in Scripture. This is especially so because of the foundational role that the creation accounts serve in the story that unfolds in the Bible.

The prophetic aspects of the creation accounts function as the undergirding for the creation model approach we use at Reasons to Believe. Through this approach, we put our understanding of the creation accounts in harm’s way by seeking to determine if they can withstand the ongoing scrutiny of scientific testing.

Our creation model is a scientific theory for biblical creation. It operates as a bona fide scientific model, replete with predictions about scientific discoveries.

The Creation Model Approach
Our creation model bridges biblical hermeneutics and the scientific method. To build our model, we:

  • collate all creation accounts and passages that describe God’s creative works
  • interpret each of these scriptural passages in their immediate context using sound exegetical techniques
  • check our interpretations against interpretations of other relevant passages, spiraling toward a consistent reading of the collected passages
  • integrate the passages into a comprehensive and coherent description of God’s creative acts
  • recast this description in the form of a scientific model,
  • and from this model develop predictions about what scientists should discover

While the biblical texts constrain our model and define its framework, as is true for any scientific model, considerable freedom exists to adjust and fine-tune our model as scientists and theologians make new discoveries about nature and gain new insights on Scripture. Our creation model is dynamic, like any other scientific model. We also recognize that for some biblical passages, a range of valid interpretations exists. These possibilities mean that there can be variants of our creation model.

Yet, our model does have constraints. Out of those constraints arise core, inviolable predictions. Like biblical prophecy, these predictions are nonnegotiable and must be fulfilled for any reasonable version of our model to be valid. If any of these core predictions fail, then our model is invalid. In this sense, the core predictions of our creation model—predictions that arise out of a robust interpretation of the creation passages found in Scripture—are like the predictions associated with biblical prophecy. It is all or nothing.

To date, none of the core predictions of our creation model have been falsified. In fact, many of these predictions have been satisfied in spectacular fashion, producing a confidence in the scientific integrity of the biblical creation accounts.

Some Key Biblical Predictions Satisfied by Scientific Advance
To illustrate this testing process, I’ve included 12 key predictions of our creation model. These predictions have survived the gauntlet of scientific testing.

The universe has a beginning. Genesis 1:1 and Hebrews 11:3 teach that the creation had a beginning, formed at God’s command. This scriptural claim finds support in big bang cosmology and the discovery that the universe had a beginning about 13.8 billion years ago.

Time has a beginning. According to 1 Corinthians 2:7, 2 Timothy 1:9, and Titus 1:2, God’s plan for redemption was put in place before time began. The biblical notion that time has a beginning finds fulfillment in the space-time theorems of general relativity, which indicate that time had a beginning that coincides with the beginning of matter, energy, and space.

The laws of nature are constant. Jeremiah 33:19-26 describes the unwavering regularity of natural processes. This regularity implies that there’s a constancy to the laws of nature, an idea that is a key assumption of modern science. This assumption has been borne out by countless observations and is an integral part of the theory of relativity.

The universe undergoes decay. Romans 8:20 teaches that the creation has been subjected to decay. This aspect of biblical cosmology anticipates the discovery of the second law of thermodynamics, and the idea that the universe continues to inexorably experience an increase in its entropy.

The universe has been designed for life. Romans 1:20 teaches that we should expect to see evidence for God’s fingerprints in nature. We also learn from Psalm 19, for example, that the heavens declare God’s glory. These concepts have been affirmed by the discovery of the cosmological anthropic principle—the idea that the constants and numerical parameters that define the universe must assume exacting values for life to exist. If even one of these numerical values deviates from its current value—in some cases, imperceptibly—life simply couldn’t exist in the universe. The fine-tuning of the constants of physics reveals the design of the universe for a purpose—the advent of life.

The earth has been designed to harbor life. According to Isaiah 45:18, the Creator intended Earth to be filled with life. Astronomers have learned that hundreds of features of Earth, the Moon, Sun, solar system, and the Milky Way Galaxy must be just-right for Earth to be a life support planet. The likelihood of all these just-right features coinciding is so remote that it appears as if Earth is rare, perhaps unique, in its capacity to support life—an idea called the Rare Earth Hypothesis. The just-right conditions needed for life implies that Earth was designed so that it could be filled with life.

Earth began as a water world with continents appearing much later. Genesis 1:2 describes Earth in its primordial state. As part of this description, Earth is depicted as a water world. The Genesis 1 text doesn’t describe the appearance of land until the third creation day. Planetary scientists now recognize that Earth’s entire surface was covered with oceans in its early history and that continents appeared about 1 billion years after Earth formed.

The early conditions of Earth were desolate. Genesis 1:2 also teaches that the earth was formless and empty. In the original Hebrew, this expression implies that early Earth was a desolate wasteland. Planetary scientists have discovered that early Earth was pummeled by impactors that would have rendered the planet a magma ocean—a place of desolation that would be inhospitable to life.

Animal life in the oceans appeared after continents formed. In the Genesis 1 creation account, animal life in the oceans wasn’t created until the fifth day, after the creation of land. Paleontologists have discovered that animal life didn’t appear in the earth’s oceans until around 540 million years ago, after continents had formed.

Humans and animals share biological similarities. Genesis 2:7 and Genesis 2:19, which teach that both humans and animals were made from the dust of the earth, implies that humans and other animals should have similar biological makeup. These passages anticipate the anatomical, physiological, biochemical, and genetic similarity that anthropologists have discovered for humans and chimpanzees.

Humanity started from an original pair. Genesis 2 teaches that humanity started from two people created by God. While current population estimates suggest that humanity began from a population of several thousand individuals, not two, this prediction of our model hasn’t been falsified. These population numbers are time-average values, meaning that even though the average population for humanity may have been a few thousand people within the time window corresponding to humanity’s first appearance on Earth, there could easily be points of time—say, at the beginning of the time window—when humanity’s population was two and then rapidly increased in number as implied by Genesis 1–11.

Human beings are unique and exceptional. Genesis 1:26–27 teaches that human beings are uniquely made in God’s image. This concept aligns with a growing recognition among anthropologists that humans are exceptional.

This list is by no means complete. There are many more features and predictions of our creation model—and there will be more to come as we continue to develop our model. Yet this sampling should be sufficient to illustrate how the creation accounts in Scripture can be reformulated into a scientific model. The core predictions presented here are logical entailments of our model, flowing naturally from the teachings of Scripture. These predictions have been satisfied, meeting both the criteria of biblical prophecy and science.

The fulfilled predictions of our creation model, like the fulfilled predictions of a biblical prophet, gives us confidence that Scripture is indeed God’s Word to us.

In the twenty-first century, sometimes referred to as the “post-truth” era, people in growing numbers have begun to distrust science, scientists, and centuries’ worth of scientific research findings. Cases in which scientific data have been manipulated or misrepresented for political or ideological purposes have led people around the world to question even the most firmly established facts. Today, a shocking number of people stand behind the claim that the world and all our solar system planets are flat bodies. Many claim that NASA astronauts never set foot on the Moon or that the glorious images captured through space telescopes are fake.  

A fundamental principle undergirding all scientific disciplines and endeavors is under attack. Various individuals, for reasons other than scientific ones, are suggesting that the laws and constants of physics may not be invariable at all times and places throughout the universe. They question the very foundation of the scientific method and, thus, the basis for all scientific knowledge. 

My purpose in writing today is to counter this alarming antiscience trend by providing a thorough review of the latest, most firmly established measurements and observations upholding and solidly affirming the case for unchanging physical laws. At the same time, these findings attest to what the Bible declared thousands of years ago, a declaration that became a major stepping stone in my journey toward trust in God and his Word.

The Bible, in fact, gave and still gives impetus to investigating the natural world and trusting what our investigation reveals. It seems no accident of history that the Scientific Revolution exploded out of Reformation Europe. That’s when and where, for the first time, the message of the Bible became more widely known to the world.

Recent Experimental Affirmations of Unchanging Physical Laws  
The fine-structure constant quantifies the strength of the electromagnetic force interactions among elementary charged particles. Laboratory experiments using single-ion optical clocks conducted over a span of 1 year showed that possible variations in the fine-structure constant could be no greater than 3.9 x 10-17/year.1 This determination represents the most stringent laboratory confirmation to date on the unchanging nature of the fine-structure constant.

Further evidence comes from a natural nuclear fission reactor that operated two billion years ago in what is now Oklo, Gabon. Calculations performed on fresh cores in the reactor, each with different uranium content, combined with measurements of the samarium-149 cross section and the ratios of samarium-147 to samarium-149, established that changes in the fine-structure constant2 and the strange quark mass3 over the past 2 billion years must be no greater than 1.0 x 10-17/year and 1.0 x 10-18/year respectively.

Three Japanese physicists conducted experiments on ultracold (140 microkelvin or 0.00014 °C above absolute zero) photoassociated 41K87Rb molecules. Their experiments, performed over a four-year period, showed that variation in the electron-to-proton mass ratio must be no more than 1.3 x 10-14/year.4 Experiments based on comparisons of Ytterbium+and Cesium atomic clocks established that the electron-to-proton mass ratio varied by less than 2.1 x 10-16/year.5 A team of ten British physicists using single-ion atomic optical clocks determined that variation of the electron-to-proton magnetic moment ratio must be less than 1.3 x 10-16/year.6

Just to be clear, each of these numbers from each of these tests comes as close to zero as technology allows or total confidence requires.

The Apollo Confirmations
On July 21, 1969, many of us who are old enough had the privilege of watching live, on television, as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set up a laser reflector on the Moon’s surface. Its purpose: to test gravitational theories (see figure 1). In 1971, the Apollo 14 crew placed a similar laser reflector at a different site on the Moon, and the Apollo 15 crew set up another. Theirs was a higher quality reflector, three times the size of the one installed by Armstrong and Aldrin (see figure 2). Figure 3 shows the locations on the Moon of the three laser reflectors.

Six observatories on Earth are capable of performing precise timing experiments by bouncing laser reflections off these Apollo lunar instruments: the McDonald Observatory in Texas, the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur in France, the Matera Observatory in Italy, and the Wettzell Observatory in Germany.

In a previous article, I explained how lunar laser ranging (LLR) experiments have demonstrated the veracity of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, a theory that is a cornerstone of cosmic origin models.7 These same experiments are useful for testing the variability of the gravitational force constant and the electron-to-proton mass ratio. The LLR experiments conducted over a 51-year period have yielded tight constraints on these two constants. They show that the gravitational force constant varies by no more than 1.5 x 10-14/year,8 and the electron-to-proton mass ratio, by no more than 4.5 x 10-14/year.9 Again, numbers so small as to be considered zero.

New Observational Tests of Physical Laws
Due to the finite, identical (to within fifteen decimal places),10 and accurately known velocities of light, neutrinos, and gravity waves, astronomers are able to test the constancy of the laws of physics throughout deep time. Astronomical observations provide direct measures of the characteristics and operation of the physical laws at any time during the history of the universe simply by focusing on astronomical objects at different distances from Earth. (The greater the distance of an astronomical object, the farther back in time astronomers observe the light, gravity waves, or neutrinos emitted by the object.)

Astronomers can measure the wavelength positions of certain spectral lines emitted by stars, galaxies, and quasars, observing where the spectral lines are shifted by interactions with electric and magnetic fields. Such measurements yield the value of the fine-structure constant at the moment when light was emitted from the star, galaxy, or quasar.

Thousands of measurements made by astronomers show that the fine-structure constant in stars, galaxies, and quasars from 4 light-years to 12.9 billion light-years away differs by no more than 1 part in a million from its measured value on Earth today.11 These measurements imply that any variations in the value of the fine-structure constant would be no greater than 7.8 x 10-17/year over the past 12.9 billion years.

Similarly, astronomical observation of spectral lines in stars, galaxies, and quasars shows that variations in the electron-to-proton mass ratio must be no greater than 1.36 x 10-17/year over the past 7.34 billion years12 and no greater than 1.6 x 10-17/year throughout the past 12.9 billion years.13 The same kinds of observations establish that the gravitational force constant has varied by no more than 7.9 x 10-12/year over the past 11.0 billion years.14

Helioseismology observations of the Sun conducted over a 24-year period demonstrate that the gravitational force constant varies by no more than 5.2 x 10-14/year.15 Meanwhile, pulsar timing observations conducted over a 26-year period confirm that any changes in the gravitational force constant can be no more than 1.0 x 10-12/year.16  

Unchanging Physical Laws in the Earliest Moments of the Universe
Several papers published in theoretical journals suggest the possibility of small changes in a few of the constants undergirding the laws of physics. Such speculations point only to the extremely early history of the universe—the time before the first stars and galaxies formed, even before the occurrence of nucleosynthesis.

However, the observed effects of big bang nucleosynthesis imply that the fundamental constants undergirding the laws of physics possessed the same values then as physicists measure today in their experiments and that astronomers see in their observations of stars, galaxies, and quasars.17 These effects indicate that the laws of physics have remained unchanged since the universe was just one second old.

A recent article in Astronomy & Astrophysics18 indicates that a tiny change in the fine-structure constant at that very early moment would be conceivable IF there were no viable solution to what’s considered the “lithium problem.” It seems the amount of lithium astronomers have observed in stars falls short of the amount predicted to arise from big bang nucleosynthesis. Yet, as demonstrated in The Creator and the Cosmos, 4th edition, several possible solutions to the lithium problem do exist, and they require no variation in the value of any of the constants undergirding the laws of physics.19 The most likely of these solutions is the presence, in the early universe, of a small population of stars more massive (on average) and, consequently, much brighter than stars that exist today.

The bottom line is that everything we know and can measure about the physics of the universe and Earth, sometimes to the seventeenth and eighteenth places of the decimal, confirms—even shouts—that the laws of physics have not changed. Speculation about small changes in the laws of physics is strictly hypothetical, not based on knowledge and understanding. The epoch that remains, as yet, inaccessible to scientific observation and testing is the initial 0.00000000000000002 portion of cosmic history!  

Philosophical/Theological Implications
Thanks to their unwavering dedication and persistence and to the amazing technological tools in their hands, astronomers and physicists have affirmed the clear and repeated biblical claim that throughout the whole history of the universe and Earth, the laws of physics have remained fixed, that is, unchanged. Countless experiments and observations provide consistent affirmations of the Bible’s unique predictive power, a potent testimony to its divine inspiration and inerrancy.

No other holy book accurately describes multiple facts of nature centuries, even millennia, before they could be observed and tested by thorough and detailed scientific investigation. This biblical claim of unchanging physical laws and constants is one of the assertions, or “predictions,” that made a potent impression on me, as a curious science student beginning to investigate Christianity.

In Jeremiah 33, I read that God rebuked the Jews for doubting his promises. In Jeremiah 33:25, the prophet compares the certainty of God’s promises to “the fixed laws of heaven and earth.” The clear implication, here, is that just as the laws of physics, from thermodynamics to gravity to electromagnetism and more can be counted on to remain unchanging, so, too, can God’s promises be counted on.

Romans 8:20 says that the creation has been subjected to “frustration” or “futility.” Verses 21–22 declare that all of creation, the entire universe, was, and is, in a state of “slavery to decay” or “bondage to corruption.” What clearer depiction could be offered for the second law of thermodynamics? Ecclesiastes 1 and 3 and Revelation 21 support the claim that the whole of nature has been subjected to and continually experiences ongoing decay. 

Given the design features God built into the universe, this progression to disorder (entropy) is essential for physical life and physical work to be possible, but that’s another story, which I have told elsewhere.20 Romans 8:23 tells us that the laws of physics will remain pervasively in effect until God’s redemptive work is complete. The completion of this work will occur when the full number of humans God intends to redeem have embraced his offer of rescue in Christ.

In other words, the more we learn about the created realm, both the cosmos and ourselves, the stronger the basis for confidence that the biblical writers were supernaturally and accurately inspired21 by the One who brought the cosmos—and all of us—into existence.

During my freshman year of college, I took two classes in economics: microeconomics and macroeconomics. (I aced both courses, by the way.) Those courses were so much fun that I contemplated becoming an economics major. I’m not sure what the appeal was. Perhaps I was fascinated (and still am) by the idea that mathematical principles exist that can make sense of complex economic systems and I could learn to master those principles. Once discovered, these principles can be marshalled to predict the ways consumers and economies will respond to changes in supply and demand. 

This same fascination is one reason why biochemistry is so attractive to me. Like economies, the cell’s chemical systems are incredibly complex. Yet, despite their bewildering complexity biochemists have gained important insight into their structure and function. At times, we can even predict how biochemical systems will respond to environmental and internal cell stimuli.

The Challenge of Predicting Metabolic Pathways
The set of biochemical systems collectively referred to as intermediary metabolism is the pinnacle of biochemical complexity. (See Intermediary Metabolism.) Even though these systems are complex, it is incumbent on biochemists to understand them and be able to predict their behavior. Disturbances in metabolic processes cause numerous diseases. For this reason, metabolic reactions are often drug targets. For drug development to be efficient and successful, biochemists need to know how to predict the response of metabolic pathways when drugs are administered. 

Additionally, biotechnologists and synthetic biologists are interested in engineering metabolic pathways so that organisms can serve as bioreactors that produce valuable products (drugs, vaccines, biofuels, bioplastics, etc.) from readily available and inexpensive starting materials. Agricultural scientists also work to manipulate metabolic processes to produce crops and livestock that yield more nutritious foods while thriving under Earth’s changing climate and environmental conditions.  

Recently, two biophysicists from Japan made headway toward this end by successfully applying an equation used in microeconomics—the Slutsky equation—to metabolic systems. This equation predicts consumer demand for goods in response to price changes and consumers’ income. It also appears to be able to predict metabolic responses to changes in nutrients or the introduction of metabolic perturbants such as drugs and toxins.1

The principal investigator of the duo found inspiration for the study when he noticed striking similarities between metabolic diagrams and graphical displays used in economics. This topological similarity led him to wonder if economic models could be used to predict changes to metabolic systems when they are disturbed by drugs or deliberately altered through bioengineering methods.2

Their work has important scientific implications and critical utility in biotechnology. It also has provocative philosophical and theological implications. Before I discuss the biophysicists’ work and explore the implications of their findings, a brief primer on intermediary metabolism will be helpful. Those readers well-versed in biochemistry may choose to skip ahead to Microeconomics Predicts Metabolic Perturbations.

Intermediary Metabolism
It’s not just economies that share commonalities with metabolic pathways, so do interconnected city streets. The chemical reactions that comprise intermediary metabolism are organized like city streets into routes or pathways comprised of a series of chemical reactions. These reactions transform starting compounds into final products via a sequence of small, stepwise chemical changes. Each step in a metabolic route is mediated by a protein (called an enzyme). The pathways can be linear, branched, or circular.

The chemical components that form part of one metabolic sequence sometimes take part in other pathways. These shared compounds cause metabolic pathways to be interconnected and networked together in the same way that streets form intersections when they come together. The collection of metabolic processes represents a complex, reticulated web of chemical reactions, each one catalyzed by an enzyme.

Microeconomics Predicts Metabolic Perturbations 
The two biophysicists demonstrated that operations of economies and metabolism pathways are both described by the Slutsky equation. The equation has two terms: one that reflects the substitution effect and one that reflects the income effect.

The Substitution Effect
The idea behind the substitution effect appears simple at first glance. If the price of a particular good (or service) increases, consumers will buy less of it. If the price decreases, consumers will buy more of it. But it can be more complicated than that. Sometimes when the price of a good drops, consumer demand will remain unchanged. In this case, consumers have more income and decide to use their newfound purchasing power to buy other goods. In some cases, if the price falls, so, too, does the demand for a particular good. In this case, the consumer perceives the item as less valuable or of a lower quality and will purchase more costly items in its place. In the same vein, as the price rises, consumer demand for that good will tend to increase. In this scenario, the consumer perceives the good as more valuable or of a greater quality. 

Economists refer to goods that experience an increased demand when prices drop or a decrease in demand when prices rise as normal or ordinary goods. On the other hand, they define Giffen goods (named after Scottish economist Sir Robert Giffen) as goods that display the opposite behavior. Their demand increases as their price increases and falls as their price drops. 

The Income Effect
The income effect refers to the impact that a change in income has on the demand for goods. As income increases, consumers gain purchasing power. As income decreases, consumers lose purchasing power. As noted, a change in the price of goods also alters the consumer’s purchasing power. For this reason, the substitution and income effects can work in concert or in opposition to one another. 

When a consumer’s income changes, so, too, will the demand they have for particular goods. As with the substitution effect, the change in demand in response to change in income is complex. For example, if a consumer’s income increases, demand for a particular good can increase. In other cases, it may remain unchanged if the consumer redirects his or her increase in purchasing power elsewhere. Or demand may drop if the consumer chooses to use their increased purchasing power to replace the purchase of that particular good with another of better quality. 

Biochemical Analogs to Price and Demand
Using insight from microeconomics, the biophysicists decided to treat nutrient availability as income and metabolic “inhibitions” (such as nutrient restrictions, or drug or toxin exposures) as price. Using the Slutsky equation as a starting point, they modified it to correspond to metabolic systems, in which change in demand for a good becomes a measure of metabolic response.  

It isn’t surprising that they discovered that many metabolic systems behaved as expected, increasing their flux when more nutrients became available and decreasing their throughput when metabolic inhibitions prevailed. They also discovered scenarios when metabolic output behaved counterintuitively. For example, for certain cancer cells, the rate of metabolic respiration increases when exposed to specific anticancer drugs (which are analogous to a price increase). That is to say, the metabolic change (change in demand) of the cancer cell corresponds to a Giffen good.

The researchers also demonstrated that by using their equations, changes in metabolic output can be predicted simply by measuring the flux of a metabolic system under different nutrient conditions, or when exposed to drugs or toxins. These predictions can be made even if nothing is known at all about the metabolic systems. In other words, these researchers have discovered a fundamental relationship that applies to all metabolic systems. Remarkably, it’s the same relationship that is found in microeconomics, making it a universal law.

This insight by the Japanese researchers has practical utility for drug development and the creation of biotechnologies. It also gives us a better understanding of metabolic systems, and hence, life’s chemistry. Even more important are the interesting philosophical—maybe even theological—implications this scientific advance entails.

The Intelligibility of Nature
It is remarkable that a single, conceptually simple equation universally describes the behavior of metabolic systems and consumer response—both of which on the surface appear to be intractably complex. Making sense of metabolic systems with a single universally applicable equation is a principle that does not stand in isolation. It is endemic to the scientific enterprise. Mathematical laws that capably describe phenomena in our world abound, making nature intelligible to us. This feature is one of the most intriguing aspects of our universe. Nature’s intelligibility is astounding.

For most of the history of science, the discovery and exploration of the mathematical nature of the universe has been confined to physics and, to a lesser extent, chemistry. Because of the complexity and diversity of biochemical systems, many people working in the life sciences have wondered if simple mathematical rules exist in biochemistry and could they ever be discovered. This discovery of a simple rule that predicts the behavior of metabolic systems suggests that mathematical relationships do describe and govern biochemical phenomena.

A universe governed by mathematical relationships suggests that a deep, underlying rationale undergirds nature, which is precisely what I would expect if a Mind was behind the universe. To put it differently, if a Creator was responsible for the universe, as a Christian I would expect that mathematical relationships would define the universe’s structure and function. In like manner, if the origin and design of living systems originated from a Creator, it would make sense that biochemical systems would possess an underlying mathematical structure as well—though it might be hard for us to discern these relationships because of the systems’ complexity.

Even more astounding is our capacity as human beings to make sense of the world around us, and then use that understanding to develop technology and exert some control over nature. Our capacity to understand nature with mathematical precision is what we would expect if human beings have been made in God’s image (as Scripture describes), with the capacity to discern God’s handiwork in the world around us.

But what if humans were cobbled together by evolutionary processes? Why would we expect human beings to be capable of making sense of the world around us? For that matter, why would we expect the universe—including the biological realm—to adhere to mathematical relationships?

In other words, the mathematical undergirding of nature fits better in a theistic conception of reality than one rooted in materialism. And toward that end, the discovery by the two investigators points to God’s role in the origin and design of life.

Is There a Biochemical Anthropic Principle?
The Japanese scientists believe their discovery of a universal, mathematical equation that describes the behavior of metabolic pathways may turn out to be the rule rather than the exception. The two researchers are embarking on a project to determine if other universal laws describing living systems can be found.3

Their discovery also implies that metabolic systems did not arise through the haphazard outworking of evolutionary history. Because a universal law governs the operation of metabolic systems, the structure of these systems appears to be fundamentally dictated and constrained by the laws of nature. In other words, the behavior of metabolic systems appears to be inevitable in a universe like ours.

It is eerie to think that the universe appears to be structured in a just-right way so that metabolic systems—central to life—behave predictably. If the universe was any other way, this may not be the case. 

One way to interpret this “coincidence” is to view it as evidence that our universe has been designed for a purpose (the anthropic principle). And purpose must come from a Mind—namely, God.

And you can take that conclusion to the bank.

A significant problem has troubled cosmologists—and the big bang model—for at least the past two decades, ever since astronomers first made precision measurements of the rate at which the universe expands. The problem is an apparent discrepancy in the value of the Hubble constant, H0, the rate at which the cosmos is expanding. Measurements taken by two different methods yield discrepant results. Astronomers label this problem “the Hubble constant tension.” 

The value of H0 determined through observation of relatively local (in astronomical terms) Cepheid variable stars and type Ia supernovae appears to differ from the value obtained through analysis of the far distant cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), the radiation left over from the cosmic origin event, observed and mapped at the farthest reaches of the universe.

Young-earth creationists cite the Hubble constant tension as evidence that big bang models must be false,1 while some research astronomers cite the Hubble constant tension as evidence for the existence of “new physics”—a previously hidden physical law or constant.2 Some of their suggestions include phantom dark enerybiometric gravitydisappearing dark energy, and modified Newtonian dynamics

Both groups call into question the standard big bang model (actually, a set of big bang models) and claim that it requires significant revision, if not outright rejection. What’s more, given the close parallel between big bang model features and the biblical depiction of our cosmic origin and features, these groups thereby call into question the accuracy and reliability of the Scriptures.3

Hubble Constant Tension
Clearly there is much at stake in the Hubble constant tension, not just scientifically but also theologically and ideologically. So, how problematic is the discrepancy?

In at least two recently posted articles about the tension, I presented three different astronomical approaches to resolving the discrepancy that, if combined, would require no appeal to new physics.4 When these articles appeared, the best value of H0 determined locally was 74.03 ± 1.42 kilometers/second/megaparsec (km/s/Mpc), where a megaparsec = 3.26156 million light-years, or 19.174 million trillion miles; and the best value of H0 determined from maps of the CMBR was 67.4 ± 0.5 km/s/Mpc. The 6.6 km/s/Mpc difference, which amounts to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy, implied that the disparity was most likely more than a statistical fluke.

More recently, the discrepancy shrank further. The best value of H0 determined locally from observations of Cepheid variable stars and type Ia supernovae is 73.01 ± 0.99 km/s/Mpc.5 The best value of H0 determined from maps of the CMBR and baryon acoustic oscillations is 67.66 ± 0.42 km/s/Mpc.6 However, because both measurements include calculations of statistical and systemic errors, the error bars associated with them grew smaller, making the discrepancy slightly larger, thus failing to alleviate the tension. 

From a historical perspective, this difference in Hvalue would seem insignificant. When I was a graduate student, one team of astronomers was claiming that H0 was about 50 km/s/Mpc, while another team seemed sure that H0 was about 100 km/s/Mpc. The professor in an observational cosmology course I took responded to the discrepancy with this comment: “What’s a factor of two among friends?” At the time, the combination of the statistical and systematic errors exceeded 30 km/s/Mpc. Clearly, the difference between determinations of H0 has grown vastly smaller—by a factor of ten—with time and advancing research, and yet the tension remained.   

Is Modern Cosmology in Crisis?
Popular literature has gone so far as to declare that cosmology is in crisis because of the Hubble constant tension. However, as I discussed in articles from three years ago, the fact that our Milky Way Galaxy (MWG) resides in an underdense region of the universe bumps up measurements of H0 based on local observations by at least 1–2%. 

Meanwhile, astronomers have come to understand that in a universe dominated by dark energy and dark matter, as observations affirm, H0 will be 1% less at the cosmic beginning than it is today. Also, measurements (even prior to 2020) of the local cosmic expansion rate based on a distance indicator called tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) stars, rather than on Cepheid variable stars, showed the value of H0 as 69.8 ± 0.8 km/s/Mpc.7 Still more recent and comprehensive measurements of the local cosmic expansion rate based on TRGB stars has yielded values for H0 as 71.5 ± 1.8 km/s/Mpc8and 72.94 ± 1.98 km/s/Mpc,9 respectively. 

Although most astronomers would agree that these adjustments helped to alleviate at least some of the Hubble constant tension, a certain unease lingered. However, this tension need no longer remain.  

The Missing Time Dilation Factor
In an article posted a few weeks ago, I explained how big bang models predict that clocks in the distant universe run more slowly than clocks in the MWG.10 Time, as measured by clocks moving at high velocities relative to Earth, will be elongated by a factor of 1 divided by the square root of (1 – v2/c2), where v is the velocity at which the clock itself is moving (relative to clocks on Earth) and c is the velocity of light. In an expanding universe, galaxies move away from Earth at velocities proportional to their distances. The article goes on to describe how astronomers developed the ability to use certain “clocks” located in quasars more than 12.8 billion light-years away to further test and affirm the validity of this effect and, thus, the big bang prediction.

More recently still, an astronomer and an engineer working independently of one another have pointed out in their published papers that a key systematic factor in determining the Hubble constant value has been overlooked.11 That factor is time dilation. 

Because of time dilation, which is inherent to all big bang models, different starting times for the determination of H0 will inevitably produce slightly different measured values. In the case of H0 measurements based on maps of the CMBR, the direction of time points toward the future, right up to today, from the surface of last scattering. At that time the universe transitioned from being opaque to transparent, roughly 380,000 years after the cosmic creation event. In the case of Hmeasurements determined locally via observations of Cepheid and TRGB stars and type Ia supernovae, the direction of time points backward from the present toward the time when the universe transitioned. In both cases, the H0 measurement includes the effect of cosmic time dilation.

For H0 determinations based on observations of local stars and galaxies, the time dilation effect increases the value of H0, adding about 5 km/s/Mpc. For determinations of H0 based on observations of CMBR maps and very distant galaxies, time dilation results in a decrease in the value of H0, a decrease equivalent to about 5 km/s/Mpc. 

Both measured values of H0 are valid, and both are consistent with one another when time dilation, which the big bang predicts, is fully accounted for. Simply stated, time dilation removes the apparent discrepancy in the Hubble constant measurements. The tension has been relieved.  

Theological/Ideological Implications
Resolution of the Hubble constant tension represents good news for proponents of the standard big bang model. For proponents of a recent cosmic creation, it represents the opposite.12 Given that the Bible predicted some of the fundamental features of big bang cosmology long before astronomers discovered them, resolution of the Hubble constant tension helps affirm a cornerstone doctrine of Christianity—the supernatural inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible in alltopics it addresses.

In multiple books and articles, I’ve endeavored to demonstrate that science is possible and comprehensible only in light of God’s existence.1 However, I hope my writings have made clear that not just any God will do, as many people today would seem to suggest. I’ve come to believe, with confidence, only one does. Discovering the God who fits all the facts revealed via scientific investigation—a body of facts that continually grows—dramatically altered the trajectory of my life. Here is a brief account of how I came to this conclusion.

Problems with Polytheism
Polytheism posits the existence of multiple deities, each distinct from the others. In one sense, animism may be considered the earliest form of polytheism. This diverse array of ancient cultural beliefs (still held by some people today) attributes soul, spirit, and sentience to animals, plants, rocks, and other elements of the natural realm. Each entity is thought to possess at least some unique characteristic, power, and/or responsibility, but none explains the existence of the whole realm of nature, nor does any possess an identifiable capacity for agency. 

Later, more fully organized and articulated belief systems, from Hinduism and paganism to the Greek and Roman pantheon, among others, posited distinct ways in which various gods interact with humans and the rest of nature. Each of the multiplicity of gods is said to exhibit a distinct mind, purpose, and agenda with respect to the world and people. Polytheism, thus, predicts that science may reveal evidence of design in nature; however, any apparent designs will lack evidence of a unified, coordinated, and/or integrated effort. Distinct agendas inevitably will produce some compromises, suboptimizations, and oversights in the designs.

A few millennia ago, even as recently as a few centuries ago, scientific advance was insufficient in most fields to determine with much certainty whether incongruities, compromises, oversights, suboptimizations, and/or a lack of coordination did or did not characterize the record of nature. Such is no longer the case. While the scientific record does reveal examples of design trade-offs, even the trade-offs appear optimized to achieve multiple purposes simultaneously. 

Rather than reflecting the agency of multiple independent minds with distinct purposes and goals, everywhere scientists survey nature’s realm, they see evidence of design that indicates planning, development, and implementation by a single Being with an integrated set of purposes.

If the natural realm owes its existence and operation to multiple distinct gods, science will lead to inevitable clashes. Findings would be inconsistent and incongruous. Science disciplines would collide. Researchers would find it nearly impossible to reconcile scientific data and interpretations. Given the hierarchical nature of polytheism with the gods possessing different levels of authority that sometimes overlap and conflict, moral and ethical chaos would also be inevitable.   

Problems with Strict Monotheism
Strict monotheism—religions and belief systems with one and only one God manifested in a single Person, such as Judaism and Islam—would seem to account readily for the harmony and consistency of designs and processes in the realm of nature, including the appearance of optimized templates in living creatures. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are often listed together as prime examples of monotheistic religions, but these three “Abrahamic” religious traditions identify the one God and define the term monotheism in distinctly different ways. 

Many Jewish scholars distinguish their version of monotheism from the Christian version by calling theirs “ethical monotheism.” These scholars emphasize the moral and ethical aspects of belief in a single God whose law applies to all of humanity and whose priority is that humans behave decently toward one another. Some Jews, like many Muslims, believe God demands adherence to a specific and narrow set of outward practices, including diet, dress, and grooming. However, Judaism does not demand the conversion of non-Jews as a condition of God’s mercy in judgment, whereas Islam considers non-Muslims as subject to condemnation by Allah, the Islamic name for God.

The most glaring problem with both forms of strict monotheism is the lack of any satisfying answer to the origin of love. If God is a solitary Being, then before creating anything or anyone, this God has no concept of love. This God has no one to express love to or to receive love from. Herein lies a dilemma: how can a Being who has no basis for conceiving of or experiencing love create beings who can and do manifest love? In strict monotheism, love does not exist until the one God creates other beings and endows them with a capacity that he lacks. In strict monotheism, God is compelled to create in order to know and experience what love is.

Islam declares that Allah (God) is greater than everyone/everything and has no need of anything. The dilemma of love’s origin contradicts this declaration. Those Jewish and Islamic apologists who are aware of the dilemma respond by appealing to God’s transcendence (beyond the physics and dimensions of the universe and, therefore, beyond human experience). They claim that God expressed and experienced love in his transcendent state in a manner totally different from the love that humans express and experience. However, this claim still fails to address the origin of the love that humans express and experience.

Problems with Atheism
In the words of the popular twentieth-century astronomer Carl Sagan, “The cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.”2 Atheists claim that all the designs scientists and others detect in nature are “apparent” designs, only. They assert that these so-called designs represent accidents of nature, with no intended purposes or goals behind them. They assert the nonexistence of mind, person(s), or intelligence behind nature’s realm, including the origin and design of space-time, matter, and energy.

The problem with their assertions is that they fail to address why things in the natural realm are as they are. They fail to explain why anything exists at all. They face the challenge that strictly naturalistic explanations for the origin of the universe, life, and humanity are becoming more problematic, not less, with advancing scientific research.  

Atheism fails to provide any rational explanation for the exponentially increasing evidence of fine-tuning at all size and time scales within the universe that makes possible not only the existence of humans and our global high-technology civilization but also that of bacteria and molecules. That fine-tuning includes the universe’s mass, age, geometry, expansion rate, rate of decay, laws of physics, and space-time dimensions.3    

How the Trinity Comports with Science
The doctrine of a triune God, which is both unique and central to Christianity, encounters none of the intractable problems associated with animism, polytheism, strict monotheism, and atheism. A God who exists as one Being in three coequal, coeternal, consubstantial divine persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) with identical and indissoluble character attributes, intents, goals, and purposes perfectly matches and explains what the scientific investigation of the natural realm reveals: ubiquitous coherence, consistency, congruity, harmony, efficiency, coordination, and optimization. It explains why the natural realm provides increasing evidence of having been designed and created by a single Being with a single set of purposes. 

The Trinity explains the origin of love. Before the Trinity creates anything, God is experiencing and expressing love. As a triune Being, God is complete and totally fulfilled before creating anything or anyone. Such a God has no need to create.

The perfect love experienced and expressed by the triune God explains the symmetry, elegance, and beauty evident throughout the natural realm—as well as in the mathematics that describe the operation of the natural realm. The triune God provides a complete and consistent explanation for morality, accountability, justice, and mercy. 

Christianity’s triune God explains why design is so ubiquitous, optimal, complex, and integrated throughout nature. It explains why scientists observe these characteristics on all size scales from the largest down to the smallest subatomic, even subparticle, level.

Why a Triunity?
Christian theologians and others have long pondered why God is not a duality or quaternity, rather than a Trinity. One conclusion to this mystery is that God, as a Trinity, best explains the perfection of his love.

Research psychologists have demonstrated that where love is expressed always and only between two persons, its perfection cannot be observed because it remains untested. A third person in a relationship becomes challenging in human (less-than-perfectly-loving) relationships where “triangulation,” or two v. one, presents a temptation. Nevertheless, as many couples have experienced, the birth of children not only adds but also multiplies love, rather than diminishing it.

In some sects of Christianity, an angel or a saint is elevated to the status of Godhead, which makes God a quaternity. As Christian scholars have observed, however, people within these sects struggle in attempts to worship each of the four “persons” equally, given that they possess unequal qualities. Worshippers tend to experience confusion over the roles, or division of labor, among the persons comprising the Godhead.

In the first chapter of his first epistle, the apostle John declares that God is light, and this light has been made visible to the heart of every human being. John goes on to explain in the chapters that follow the three primary components of this light: life, love, and truth. He points out that all three persons of the Godhead shower life, love, and truth upon God’s creation, upon human beings, in particular. In doing so, God the Son takes the primary role in bestowing life, God the Father takes the primary role in showing love, and God the Holy Spirit takes the primary role in communicating truth. This elaboration on what God’s “light” means explains how humans best receive God’s light and eliminates confusion about a divine “hierarchy.” 

The Trinity Demonstrates Divine Inspiration
The Trinity transcends the ability of humans to fully describe, accurately picture, or completely comprehend. As demonstrated in my book, Beyond the Cosmos, the Trinity transcends the limits of the physical laws and space-time dimensions of the cosmos.4 Since humans are confined to the dimensions and physical laws, our capacity to visualize is limited by them. 

Something I observed in studying the (non-Christian) major religions of the world during my late teens is that each presented God in a manner that can be visualized by humans. This observation led me to consider that these religions might be merely human constructions rather than divine revelations. When the space-time theorems established that the universe’s space-time dimensions came into existence at the origin of the universe,5 I realized that God, the Creator, must possess powers and attributes that transcend these cosmic space-time dimensions. A revelation from this God could and would describe real phenomena that go beyond the ability of humans to visualize.

I saw the Bible standing alone in this respect. The Bible revealed God in a manner that is impossible for humans to conceive through their own reason and imagination. The Bible alone bears the signature of a Being whose message comes to us from beyond the cosmos.

The triune God repeatedly and consistently revealed in both the Old and New Testaments is clearly and uniquely distinct from the gods of all other religious writings and teachings. Nothing like a triune Creator, Redeemer, and Empowerer can be found within the foundational books on which the world’s religions, other than Christianity, stake their claims. 

While Jews and Muslims describe the Old Testament as the true and trustworthy Word of God, they deny a doctrine made especially clear in the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Isaiah. In conversation with both Jews and Muslims, I’ve found that most are either unaware of or have given little attention to the many OT passages showing that God is triune, one essence manifested in three persons.

Given that Isaiah is highly esteemed by both Jews and Muslims, I believe it was more than a mere “stroke of luck” that the only complete book of the Old Testament found among the Dead Sea Scrolls was Isaiah. Three years ago, I assembled a list of verses from Isaiah that express God’s simultaneous singularity and triunity. (See my post, “Does the Book of Isaiah Teach the Trinity?) I encourage readers of this blog to share this scientific perspective on the Trinity not only with fellow Christians but also with Jews, Muslims, participants in cults, and all who struggle to believe that God can be one and three. God’s triune nature makes possible our redemption from sin and an eternal loving relationship with the Creator.

Three Things I’ve Learned from Reading C. S. I’ve been reading and rereading the writings of C. S. Lewis over the last 45 years. In fact, the very first Christian book I ever read was Lewis’s modern classic Mere Christianity. I’ve also read a lot about Lewis’s life and thought from the various writings of leading Lewis scholars and researchers.

I often say that Lewis is part of my “big three.” That is, outside of Scripture my three favorite Christian thinkers and writers are St. Augustine, Blaise Pascal, and Lewis. I write about all three of them and others in my book Classic Christian Thinkers: An Introduction (see chapters 3, 8, and 9, respectively).

We’ve done many programs about Lewis on Reasons to Believe’s podcast Straight Thinking (now titled Clear Thinking), including a series where I listed 25 things I’ve learned from his writings. In this brief article I’ll mention just three. But these three mean a lot to me as a Christian thinker and apologist. I hope they resonate with you as well.

1. The Need to Cojoin Substance with Accessibility
A master communicator in both speech and writing, Lewis wrote:

“I have come to the conviction that if you cannot translate your thoughts into uneducated language, then your thoughts were confused. Power to translate is the test of having really understood one’s own meaning.”1

During World War II, Lewis gave inspirational presentations on the BBC and talks to members of Britain’s Royal Air Force, whose mortality rates during the war were extremely high. He soon learned that he couldn’t use his regular “Oxford speak” when communicating to laypeople. Thus, he developed the insight that the truly cogent speaker or writer should be able to translate his or her thoughts in a way that the layperson can understand.

It is definitely a challenge to successfully cojoin substance with accessibility in such fields as science, philosophy, and literature. But when it is done well, everyone benefits. This insight is something I have tried to incorporate into my speaking and writing.

2. The Power of Explanatory Reasoning
This famous Lewis quote reflects the power he saw in Christianity’s explanatory reasoning:

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”2

Lewis often used an abductive type of reasoning (inference to the best explanation) and a cumulative case approach to affirm the truth of Christianity. Much of his apologetics reasoning attempted to show that Christianity makes the best sense of the world and life compared to competing worldview systems.

While there are various approaches to doing Christian apologetics, I’ve found that presenting the faith in abductive terms makes sense to a broad audience. Abductive reasoning has been described as the natural way human beings reason.

3. The Idea of Mere Christianity
The book Mere Christianity also contains the idea of mere Christianity. In looking broadly at Christianity, Lewis writes:

“When all is said (and truly said) about the divisions of Christendom, there remains, by God’s mercy, an enormous common ground.”3

In the preface of Mere Christianity, Lewis introduces the engaging idea that there are essential doctrinal truths (such as the Trinity, incarnation, atonement) that all branches of Christendom, including all theologically conservative denominations within Protestantism, accept. This “agreed, or common, or central”4 Christianity doesn’t encompass everything that Christ’s followers need to believe and affirm to live out their faith, but it does constitute a large doctrinal slice of historic Christianity.

Yet, while the idea of “mere Christianity” doesn’t address all of Christendom’s important theologically debated issues, the substantial theological common ground shared by the churches gives them an important connection and a place to carry on further dialogue. It can serve as an important bridge between the Orthodox, Catholics, and various Protestants.

As a person who grew up Catholic then became an evangelical in college and is now a conservative Anglican, the idea of mere Christianity helps me to focus upon truth, unity, and charity in my interactions with other Christians.

Takeaway
While I don’t agree with all of Lewis’s views, he’s a profound and influential thinker and I’m deeply grateful for the many insights he offers in his books.
