The best answer is that our consciousness comes from a conscious Creator who designed us as spiritual beings living in temporary physical bodies.

This new creation will be radically different from our current world. It will be a realm governed by different dimensions and different physics. The present physics and dimensions will no longer be needed since Jesus Christ will have completely eradicated the possibility of evil and sin. Because of the new physics and dimensions, there will be no decay, death, mourning, crying, or pain.

In the new creation, Christ’s human followers will rule with him over everything he created. Paul explains that redeemed humans will be teaching and judging the angels. Unlike the angels, humans directly experience the grace of God and consequently are being prepared for unimaginably rewarding careers in the new creation. As Paul declared in 1 Corinthians 2:9, no one can imagine how great and wonderful human life will be in the new creation.

Few questions weigh more heavily on the human heart than this one. Whether you’re 18 or 80, whether you’re facing a major life transition or simply lying awake wondering if you’re on the right path, one question has probably crossed your mind more times than you can count: “What should I do with my life?”

But what makes this question both beautiful and hopeful is that you don’t have to answer it alone. In fact, it’s not even primarily your question to answer. God’s Word provides clear guidance about this question, and the answer is simpler than you might expect.

The short answer? You were created to glorify God and enjoy him forever, and he has prepared specific good works for you to accomplish. Your life has divine purpose, divine design, and divine direction.

You’re not wandering aimlessly through existence, hoping to stumble upon meaning. You were made on purpose, for a purpose, by a God who loves you and has plans for your life.

The Purpose of Life

First, we need to understand the question “Why do I exist?” The Westminster Shorter Catechism poses this foundational question: “What is the chief end of man?” The answer is beautifully simple: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.”

This isn’t just theological language, it’s the bedrock truth about human existence. You weren’t created by accident or as the result of random cosmic events. You exist because God wanted you to exist. As Scripture tells us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

This echoes Jesus’s own words when he was asked about the greatest commandment: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37–39). Here we see both aspects of our purpose in life: loving God supremely and loving others genuinely.

Research in psychology consistently shows that humans have an intrinsic need for meaning and purpose. Studies demonstrate that people who report having a strong sense of purpose in life show better mental health, greater resilience, and even longer lifespans. This isn’t surprising from a Christian perspective. We were designed by God for a purpose, so naturally we flourish when we’re living according to our design.

Different religions and worldviews offer competing answers to life’s biggest questions—where we came from, why we’re here, and what ultimately gives life meaning. But here’s where the Christian understanding of life’s purpose differs dramatically from secular attempts to create meaning. From the Christian view, without God, any meaning we try to create is ultimately subjective and temporary. As philosopher Thomas Morris notes, we can only endow with meaning those things over which we have requisite control. The problem is that so much of life lies beyond our control.

In contrast, when we understand that our lives derive meaning from God himself, we’re anchored to something objective and eternal. God possesses intrinsic meaning, and we, being made in his image, derive our meaning from him. This transforms everything about how we approach the question of “What should I do with my life?”

What Should I Do With My Life?

You should live the life God has assigned to you, seeking to glorify him and enjoy him in whatever circumstances you find yourself. And you should love God with everything you have and love your neighbor as yourself. You should walk in the good works God has prepared for you, trusting that he will guide you step by step.

Within the question of what to do with your life are other questions that deserve answers. Let’s also take a look at those and what God has to say.

What Is the Point of Life?

The point of life isn’t to accumulate wealth, achieve fame, land your dream job, lead a fulfilling career, or even to be happy all the time. The point of life is to know God and make him known to others.

It’s to reflect his character and participate in his work in the world. This gives every moment of your life, big or small, significance.

God’s design for life is relational. He created us for relationships with himself and with others. When we live according to this design, we experience the deep satisfaction that comes from living as we were meant to live. Even in difficult circumstances, even when life doesn’t go according to our plans, we can find purpose in knowing that we’re part of God’s larger story.

What Can I Do With My Life?

The highest possibility for your life is to be transformed by God’s grace and to become an instrument of his love in the world. You can be part of God’s redemptive work, bringing hope to the hopeless, healing to the broken, and delivering good news to those who need it most.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to become a missionary or pastor, though you might. It means that whatever you do, you can do it as a service to God and others. For decades, scientists have wrestled with these questions. Many who look for purely natural explanations believe every living thing can be traced back to a single-celled organism, often called the “Last Universal Common Ancestor,” or LUCA. But this just creates another question: how did that first living cell even come into existence?

Figuring out how life on Earth began—specifically, how a barren planet became filled with microscopic life—isn’t just a point of scientific concern; it has huge implications for each person’s belief system. The evidence points in one of two directions. Either:

What Is Life?

Scientists have identified several key characteristics that all life on Earth shares. Life is:

  • Organized: It has a defined structure.
  • Chemically distinct: It’s different from its nonliving surroundings.
  • Homeostatic: It maintains a stable internal balance.

In addition to these traits, living things also:

  • Take in and use energy from their environment.
  • Respond and adapt to their surroundings.
  • Reproduce and experience small-scale changes, or microevolution.

Every living thing reproduces and evolves. Even if you don’t believe that all life evolved from a single common ancestor (macroevolution), it’s clear that all life changes in small ways in response to its environment (microevolution)..

What Does Life Need to Get Started?

For life to exist, it needs the right ingredients and environment. Think of it like building a house—you can’t just dump lumber, nails, and bricks on a lot and expect a home to appear. You need specific materials, a solid foundation, and a carefully ordered plan to bring it all together. In the same way, three of the most critical ingredients for most life on Earth are:

  1. water

Scientists have looked for and suggested alternatives, but there really is no substitute for water. Its unique properties make it the perfect solvent for the chemical reactions that sustain life. Findings highlight how the discovery of ancient fossils has perplexed origin-of-life researchers and cast doubt on classic evolutionary timelines. While 3.85 billion years of life history might sound like ample time for gradual evolution, the evidence tells a different story: life appears rapidly, stabilizes for long periods, and then new waves of life arise suddenly—often immediately following catastrophic extinction events.

From an old-earth creation perspective, this pattern reflects purposeful stages in Earth’s history, with ecosystems being reset and prepared for increasingly complex life, ultimately culminating in humanity. This progression aligns far more naturally with a biblical explanation of life’s origins than with older naturalistic models that require long, uninterrupted stretches of slow evolutionary change.

Where Did Life Begin?

Where life began on Earth is just as fascinating as when it began. The fossil record points to two especially significant locations: shorelines  and hydrothermal vents.

  • Shorelines: Some of the oldest fossils on Earth are found along shorelines and shallow seas in the form of stromatolites.These layered bacterial mats show that microbial communities thrived in the planet’s primeval days and their global distribution reveals that early life was already surprisingly diverse.
  • Hydrothermal Vents: Deep-sea vents provided a unique sanctuary for life sheltered from harsh surface conditions and asteroid bombardment. Microfossils in these environments show that complex biological activity was present around the same time as stromatolites.

Recent research highlights just how quickly and widely microbial communities spread, even in Earth’s most inhospitable conditions. As discussed in “What Does the Discovery of Earth’s Oldest Fossils Mean for Evolutionary Models?,” these findings challenge the timeline and expectations of naturalistic evolution, suggesting that the abrupt appearance and variety of early life on Earth isn’t easily explained by the classic models.

With so much evidence pointing to a rapid and global emergence of life, the question remains: how did such complex life begin so early?

How Scientists Study the Origin of Life

Beyond the puzzle of when life appeared, scientists are also trying to figure out how it appeared. A major focus of origin-of-life research is understanding how nonliving (prebiotic) compounds could have assembled  to form the first living cells.

To do this, researchers have developed a three-step experimental approach.

  1. Proof of Principle: These experiments aim to demonstrate that a particular chemical or physical process could contribute to one of the steps needed to create life. It’s about showing what’s possible in a lab setting.
  2. Mechanism Studies: Once a process is shown to be possible, researchers dive deeper. They study the specific mechanisms behind these chemical changes to understand exactly how they work.
  3. Geochemical Relevance: This is the most critical step. Here, scientists try to determine if the processes they’ve demonstrated in the lab could have actually happened on early Earth. In effect, seeing if the processes still work when the lab conditions match the real-world conditions from billions of years ago.

So far, scientists have had success with the first two steps. They’ve identified reliable processes that could, in principle, generate the building blocks of life. They’ve also explored the mechanisms behind these processes.

But here’s the big question: Could any of these carefully controlled lab experiments have occurred naturally on the chaotic, early earth? While we can show that certain chemical reactions are possible, demonstrating that they are relevant to the origin of life on Earth is a much greater challenge.

The Primordial Soup Theory

You’ve probably heard the classic “primordial soup” explanation for how life began. It’s the story many of us learned in school. The idea is that life didn’t just appear all at once but developed through a step-by-step process.

According to this theory, the oceans of early Earth were like a warm, chemical-rich soup. In this primordial soup, simple organic compounds randomly bumped into each other, forming more and more complex molecules. Over vast stretches of time, these nonliving but organic compounds combined in just the right way to create the very first, simple, single-celled organism.

From this initial spark of life, the theory goes, LUCA (the Last Universal Common Ancestor) eventually evolved. This is the single-celled organism from which all other life is thought to have descended.

Does the “Primordial Soup” Theory Hold Up to Science?

While the primordial soup idea is popular, scientists have run into major problems with it. These issues challenge whether this well-known story for how life began could have actually happened.

For example, the classic model assumes Earth’s early atmosphere was “reducing”—meaning rich in hydrogen-based gases that would have helped prebiotic compounds form. However, we now have strong evidence that the early atmosphere was neutral, full of water vapor, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. This type of atmosphere would have prevented many of the necessary organic compounds from ever forming.

The soup theory itself has other issues. Many of the chemical reactions needed to create the building blocks of life also produce byproducts. These extra chemicals could have stopped later reactions in their tracks or even destroyed the very compounds that had just been made.

Searching for Alternative Routes

Because of these challenges, scientists have proposed alternative theories for the origin of life on Earth.

The Problem of the Scientist in the Lab

A major hurdle for all origin-of-life experiments is researcher intervention. For a naturalistic origin of life to be plausible, the process must have happened in an unguided way , without any intelligent interference. Scientists trying to recreate these conditions have to prove their experiments could work on the chaotic, messy early earth.

However, researchers often don’t account for their own role. Simple things, like using purified chemicals, temperature control, or removing contaminating byproducts, are standard lab practice. But these actions represent a level of control and foresight that wouldn’t have existed in nature. This kind of tinkering couldn’t happen on early Earth without an intelligent designer.

In their quest to show how life could arise naturally, researchers guide the process toward a desired outcome and unwittingly play the role of a creator.

How Christians should respond to the origin of life on earth.

This leads us to an intriguing question: If creating even the simplest building blocks of a cell requires careful lab conditions and intelligent intervention, is it reasonable to think life began on Earth without a designer?

Why Is There Life on Earth?

After exploring all these scientific puzzles, what are we left with? How did life begin on Earth? While researchers have shown that certain chemical steps toward life are possible in a lab, they haven’t been able to show how these steps could happen in the real world without a scientist’s help. The gap between nonliving chemicals and a living cell remains huge.

The incredible complexity of even the simplest cell, the stunning diversity of the first fossils, and what we know about the hostile early earth all point toward a different conclusion. Both theistic and atheistic scientists acknowledge that complex life appeared suddenly and early in our planet’s history. This sudden arrival demands an explanation that goes beyond simple, unguided processes.

Science and Scripture in Harmony

At Reasons to Believe (RTB), we see overwhelming evidence for design in the history of life. The unexplained complexity and sudden diversity of the first living things point powerfully to God as the Creator. The answer to how life on Earth began seems to require an intentional, intelligent agent—much like origin-of-life experiments require an intelligent scientist.

We hold that the creation accounts in Genesis are historical and can be tested against the record of nature. Part of our testable creation model is to show Christians how the creation account fits with research on the early Earth and origins of life.

Far from contradicting the Bible, modern science gives us more reason to see the evidence for design all around us. Studying how life began actually gives us more reason to believe that God is the Creator and Sustainer of everything that lives.

When Does Life Begin According to Science?

Science confirms that human life begins at conception—the moment when sperm and egg fuse to form a zygote. From that instant, a genetically unique human being comes into existence, complete with distinct DNA.

This process, called fertilization, is widely recognized as the starting point of human life. In fact, 96% of biologists agree that life begins at fertilization, making it the prevailing scientific perspective.

When Does Life Begin Medically?

Dual Patient Approach

The medical field considers both science and ethical responsibility when addressing the question of when life begins. Many medical professionals recognize the pregnant mother and her unborn baby as two distinct patients, highlighting the view of the unborn as a unique individual. This is known as the dual patient approach.

If a concern arises, medical staff are ethically required to consider the health and life of both human beings, both collectively and independently. This dual patient approach by the medical field supports the understanding that all human life begins at conception and each life is important.

What Does the Bible Say About When Life Begins?

According to the Bible, the question of when life begins is answered by considering teachings and principles found in Scripture. Psalm 139:13–16 artfully suggests that life begins in the womb, likely at conception. There, God is intimately involved in creating a person. The Bible affirms that he:

[. . .] knit me together in my mother’s womb

and

[. . .] saw my unformed body.

This Psalm not only stresses the sanctity of life from its earliest stages but also demonstrates remarkable scientific accuracy that matches well with what science tells us about human development.

Scientific and Scriptural Insights

Further support for the biblical viewpoint stems from studies about the placenta showing the extraordinary design and function needed to support new life. This research showcases what many see as the work of a Creator to protect and nourish an early, distinct life. Consequently, the placenta’s design argues against the idea that a fetus is “just a parasite.”

Instead, it shows the important relationship needed for growth and health. Plus, new findings in neuroscience reveal changes in a woman’s brain during pregnancy, spotlighting the profound biological and emotional changes that happen while caring for new life.

Some people use Genesis 2:7, where God breathes life into Adam, to say life begins with the first breath. But this idea doesn’t align with the full scriptural context.

Instead consider the similarity between Adam’s creation and yours when you were in the womb—God intricately created both up to the point of their first breath. In Luke 1, we read phrases like “the baby leaped in her [Elizabeth’s] womb,” and “the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” These expressions make it clear that what’s in the womb is a human life and there’s no indication that life doesn’t begin until that first breath is drawn.

When Does “Personhood” Begin?

The debate over when “personhood” begins is a pivotal, often heated topic in discussions about human life. Many pro-choice supporters acknowledge that a human embryo or fetus is a human being, but they argue it is not the same as a human person.

This issue brings up two essential questions: What exactly defines a “person”? and Who decides the criteria for personhood? These questions show how unclear and arbitrary it can be to separate being a person from just being a human.

The Christian View of Personhood

From a Christian point of view, personhood starts at conception. At this point, a human being is, by definition, endowed with the image of God. This concept is known as the imago Dei. Challenges with Sentience and Self-Awareness

Critics often argue that attributes such as sentience (the ability to experience feelings and sensations) or self-awareness (consciousness) should define personhood. But these ideas often cause more problems.

  • The capacity to feel or perceive is difficult to measure and varies widely among individuals.
  • Likewise, self-awareness is a trait that develops over time and is not present at birth.

The lack of measurable standards for sentience or self-awareness leads to the question: Why should these characteristics serve as the benchmarks for personhood?

Such traits are not only arbitrary but can leave out individuals who are in certain developmental stages, such as infants or those with cognitive impairments.

Developmental Milestones and Personhood

Developmental milestones like a heartbeat, brain activity, or the ability to live outside the womb are sometimes used as markers of personhood. However, these are just stages of growth and don’t fully encase what it means to be a person. From a Christian viewpoint, personhood is linked to identity as image bearers of God, not on mere capacity for bodily function.

The Importance of Language in Human Value Discussions

The importance of using clear, precise language when talking about human value can’t be overstated. How we define “human” and “person” shapes our ethical and moral views about life and how we protect it. In the biblical worldview, every life is sacred from conception—a position that supports arguments against abortion by highlighting the value inherent to all human beings.

We encourage everyone to think about the language they use when discussing early human life. Important meanings and moral responsibilities arise from words and definitions.

Before the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provided its exquisitely detailed view into deep space (the early cosmos), astronomers were able to establish an understanding of how the periodic table of elements took shape. They were able to use ground-based telescopes in concert with the Hubble Space Telescope to observe a consistent, ongoing scaling relationship between star-formation rates, stars’ mass, and the increasing abundance of elements that match the observed features of the universe for the past 12 billion years.1

What we know is that the periodic table was sparse, initially. The first stars in the universe were comprised of hydrogen, helium, and a trace amount of lithium. The largest of these stars fused hydrogen and helium into heavier elements and scattered these elements into interstellar space when they reached the supernova phase. A second generation of stars formed from the ashes of the first. The largest of these second-generation stars more efficiently generated heavy elements and, when they went supernova, scattered far more heavy-element-enriched ashes into interstellar space. Third-generation stars, like our Sun, formed from the ashes of second-generation stars.

A Consistent Pattern for Most of History
The enrichment of elements heavier than lithium in stars and in the interstellar and intergalactic medium progresses according to a single scaling relationship, one that accurately predicts what astronomers are able to observe in galaxies. As galaxies age, they do, indeed, grow progressively richer in elements heavier than lithium, in keeping with this scaling relationship.

Astronomers have successfully measured the relative abundance of elements in millions of second and third-generation stars. They’ve also determined to a high degree of precision the quantities of heavy elements blasted into interstellar space by supernova eruptions over the past ten billion years. 

However, astronomers’ observations showed hints that this universal scaling relationship connecting star-formation rate, stellar mass, and the abundance of elements heavier than lithium might not match what occurred during the earliest one or two billion years of cosmic history.2 These “hints” motivated astronomers to use the JWST to shed light on the star-formation rate, stellar mass distribution, and abundance of elements heavier than lithium in galaxies that formed during the first billion years of cosmic history.   

The JWST Confirms Astronomers’ Hunch
A team of 13 astronomers led by Kaspar Heintz of the Cosmic Dawn Center and the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark used the JWST to measure the chemical abundances of galaxies just 470–770 million years after the cosmic origin event, aka the big bang.3 They noted that these galaxies proved significantly poorer in heavy elements than would be expected if the universal scaling relationship for older galaxies (formed 2.0–13.8 billion years after the big bang) applied. Elements heavier than lithium were only one-fourth as abundant as the universal scaling relationship would have yielded had it been operating at the same level during that early era. 

Implications for Advanced Life on Earth
The measurements by Heintz’s team indicate that while a scaling relationship does exist in these very early galaxies, it proceeded at a much lower rate than it did from 2 billion years onward in cosmic history. Heintz and his colleagues concluded that “galaxies at this time [previous to the first 800 million years of cosmic history] are still intimately connected with the intergalactic medium and subject to continuous infall of pristine gas, which effectively dilutes their metal abundances.”4 (In astronomical terms, elements heavier than lithium are referred to as “metals.”)

The dilution of heavy elements in galaxies that formed during the universe’s first 800 million years suggests that the Earth’s rich endowment of heavy elements is unexpected, by natural processes alone. Our solar system formed when the universe was only 9.22 billion years old. Multiple factors required exquisite fine-tuning for Earth to become so rapidly endowed with the superabundance of heavy elements—the elements without which Earth’s global high-technology civilization would be impossible.5 This discovery points to a supernatural Designer who provisioned planet Earth not only for the existence of billions of people but also for spreading the message of his redeeming love to all the world’s people groups in a brief (by astronomical terms) time.

A recent burst of blogs and media reports excitedly announced the discovery of molecules in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b that could have been produced, they say, only by living organisms.1 The two “biosignature” molecules, dimethyl sulfide and chloromethane, were detected by two infrared spectrometers (NIRS and NIRISS) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Although speculation ran wild, evidence indicates a lack of credibility.

Characteristics of K2-18b
K2-18b is a sub-Neptune planet (one with a radius 1.4–3.0 times Earth’s radius and a mass greater than Earth’s but less than Neptune’s) orbiting an M3 red dwarf star 124 light-years away. K2-18b orbits its star every 32.9 days at a distance of just 40% of Mercury’s orbital distance from the Sun. However, because this exoplanet’s host star is so much smaller and colder than the Sun, it’s possible that K2-18b’s surface temperature permits the existence of liquid water there. 

K2-18b is 8.6 times more massive than Earth with a radius 2.6 times larger than Earth’s. Thus, the planet’s density amounts to only 2.67 grams per cubic centimeter. By comparison, Earth’s density is 5.5134 grams per cubic centimeter.

The proximity of K2-18b to its host star means that it’s either tidally locked (with one hemisphere always facing the host star) or, like Mercury, it orbits in a spin-orbit resonance (rotating on its axis 2 or 3 times for every 1 or 2 orbital revolutions).2 In either case, one hemisphere of K2-18b faces its host star for at least 16 Earth days at a time. 

What Level of Certainty?
Through the use of JWST’s spectrometers, a team of six astronomers led by Nikku Madhusudhan positively detected methane in K2-18b’s atmosphere.3 The methane signal was at the 5-sigma level (five standard deviations, or about five times greater than the background noise). In other words, the level of certainty that methane exists in the planet’s atmosphere is 99.99997%. In the physical science literature, a detection is recognized as valid only if the signal is at least 5 sigma, or 5 times above, the background noise.

Madhusudhan’s team also detected carbon dioxide in K2-18b’s atmosphere, but only at the 3-sigma level. Their search for water (H20), ammonia (NH3), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) revealed no evidence for the presence of any of these molecules. However, they were able to establish upper limits for the abundance of water, ammonia, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen cyanide, and they were low.

What generated all the excitement was the team’s “potential” detection of dimethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3) and chloromethane (CH3Cl) (see figure 1). In reality, the detections were marginal, at best. For dimethyl sulfide, the detection was only at the 1-sigma level, and for chloromethane it was even lower.

The community of astronomical researchers remains highly skeptical of the Madhusudhan team’s “detection,” especially that of dimethyl sulfide. They’re reminded of the sensational claims in 2020 that phosphine (PH3) had been found in the upper atmosphere of Venus. That announcement generated more than 4,700 news stories around the world. Then, within just a few months, the claim had to be withdrawn in light of follow-up observations that failed to detect any phosphine at all.4 To their credit, Madhusudhan and his colleagues referred to their discovery as “tentative” and recommended more sensitive spectral measurements of K2-18b’s atmosphere.

Definitive Biosignatures?
Dimethyl sulfide is the simplest thioether. It is produced naturally on Earth by certain marine phytoplankton, algae, and corals. These marine organisms release about 10 million tons of dimethyl sulfide into Earth’s atmosphere annually. Industrial activity and chemistry occurring at the interface between the atmosphere and the ocean5 produce additional amounts of this molecule, but at trivial levels by comparison with the amount generated by marine organisms. Thus, astronomers figure that the detection of a large quantity of dimethyl sulfide in a planet’s atmosphere would be a reliable indicator of the likelihood that marine life exists on that planet.6   

On Earth, the quantity of dimethyl sulfide in the atmosphere is a benefit to advanced life. Sunlight in the atmosphere causes it to decompose into sulfur aerosols that serve as cloud condensation nuclei, the quantity and distribution of which determine the rate and location of rainfall and snowfall. Sulfur aerosols in Earth’s atmosphere also regulate Earth’s radiation balance.

Although most of the chloromethane in Earth’s atmosphere comes from organisms, this molecule does not serve as a reliable biomarker for life in other locations. Astronomers have detected chloromethane in the coma (surrounding cloud) of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and in the gas around the protostar IRAS 16293–2422, where physical and chemical conditions rule out the possibility of life.7 They have also demonstrated that there are abiotic chemical pathways for the production of chloromethane.

It has become increasingly clear to astronomers that they cannot rely on a single biosignature as proof of life’s presence. If life truly exists on an exoplanet, its presence will yield multiple biosignatures all at strong levels.

Is K2-18b a Viable Candidate to Host Life?
Several factors raise skepticism about K2-18b as a candidate for life. Previously posted articles explain why the characteristics of M-dwarf stars would rule out the possibility of life’s existence on any planet in their orbit.8

The Mudhusudhan team based their speculation about possible life on K2-18b on the hypothesis that a thin, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere overlays a thick ocean of liquid water. Such a thin atmosphere would mean that the atmospheric greenhouse effect would be too weak to turn any of K2-18b’s liquid water into steam. It also might explain why the team detected no water in the planet’s atmosphere. If K2-18b is, indeed, covered by a very thick ocean of liquid water several thousand kilometers deep, that could well account for the planet’s low bulk density. According to the Mudhusudhan team’s hypothesized scenario, K2-18b could be termed a “Hycean” planet—representing a whole new category of exoplanets claimed as prospective candidates to support life. (The word Hycean is a blend of hydrogen and ocean).

The determination that K2-18b has a thin, rather than a thick, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere is based on detection of an abundance of both methane and carbon dioxide in the exoplanet’s atmosphere, and an undetectably low (or nonexistent) quantity of ammonia and carbon monoxide. The team’s spectral observations established only that methane is abundant in K2-18b’s atmosphere. 

Given that water is the third most abundant molecule in the universe (after H2 and H3), I would agree that K2-18b could be a Hycean planet. However, to claim Hycean planets as candidates for life support is to ignore some significant realities. The greatest problem with the “oceanworld” model is this: the pressure at the bottom of an ocean as deep as several hundred kilometers or more is great enough to turn that liquid water into ice.9  

Figure 2 illustrates a cross section of the K2-18b Hycean model. Note that an ice barrier separates the planet’s liquid water from its rocky material. This barrier, which would be permanent, rules out the operation of chemical processes necessary for both the origin of life and the survival of life. An additional challenge emerges from research on ocean acidification. The team of Amit Levi and Dimitar Sasselov has demonstrated that the pH of such an ocean would range from 2 to 4, in other words, from the acidity of pure lemon juice to the acidity of pure tomato juice.10 Earth’s ocean water, by contrast, is slightly basic, with a pH of 7.5–8.4.

One must also note the fact that K2-18b orbits so closely to its host star that its rotation period roughly equals its revolutionary period, equivalent to at least 16 Earth days. With such a lengthy rotation period, one hemisphere of K2-18b will be blisteringly hot while the opposite hemisphere remains frigidly cold. The day-night temperature difference would be several hundred degrees Celsius. Such a huge difference rules out the survival of any conceivable physical life form.

Life As We Know It?
Of course, I’m assuming, here, that extraterrestrial life must be like life as we know it on Earth. Some people assert that a consideration of life as we don’t know it could yield much more optimistic estimates for the probability of extraterrestrial life. However, my only assumption is that extraterrestrial physical life must be carbon-based, and this assumption is based on well-established research.

Decades ago, biochemists considered the theoretical possibility of physical life-forms based on silicon, boron, or arsenic, for example, as substitutes for carbon. Their study led to the conclusion that carbon is the only element in the periodic table possessing the chemical bonding stability and the chemical bonding complexity that even the simplest conceivable physical life-form would require. Therefore, all life constrained by the physics and dimensions of the universe must be carbon-based.

Hycean Worlds as Viable Candidates for Life?
So far, astronomers have discovered and determined the characteristics of 5,504 planets orbiting stars other than the Sun.11 Catalogs of such planets reveal that sub-Neptune planets orbiting close to their host stars are relatively common. Such planets comprise about 5% of the 5,504 known and measured exoplanets.

A sizable fraction of sub-Neptune planets may, indeed, be Hycean worlds. The quantity of liquid water on these planets leads astronomers and laypeople, alike, to view them as promising candidates to host life. What dashes this hope, however, is the fact that too much liquid water on a planet renders the planet uninhabitable. In view of its mass and distance from the Sun, Earth is habitable because it is appropriately water-poor. Its abundance of water is at the just-right (relatively low) level to support a broad diversity and abundance of life.

Enthusiasm for the possibility of life on Hycean worlds is largely driven by an unwarranted focus on the liquid water habitable zone within a planet’s orbit around its host star. This particular zone is the broadest of the dozen or more known habitable zones within a planetary orbit.12 For a planet to accommodate life of any complexity for any length of time it must reside simultaneously in all these known habitable zones. None of the sub-Neptune planets discovered to date resides in as many of three of these planetary habitable zones simultaneously. Of 5,512 known planets, only Earth resides in more than three.

While I would not claim that the Bible rules out the possibility of God’s creating life on other planets,13 I can affirm that astronomers’ extensive observations of galaxies, stars, and planets indicate the unlikelihood that God did. As astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson famously declared, once one ventures beyond Earth, “The universe is a deadly place.”14

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of problems that life presents? Those hardships may come in the form of health challenges, emotional difficulties, family troubles, or a financial crisis.

Or have you ever felt all alone—isolated, lonely, and seemingly without family and close friends? Sometimes these feelings are brought on by divorce, bereavement, depression, or even a pandemic.

Sound mental health depends upon the ability to effectively cope with life’s problems. How can Christians deal with such issues? I’ll briefly address the problem of pain and suffering from the aspect of a believer in Christ.

Christians and the Challenges of Life
The Christian life consists of living a life of faith, hope, and love by God’s grace in light of what he has revealed about himself and the saving relationship we have with him.

When I go through tough times I take my concerns to God in prayer but I also ask other Christians to pray for me. On some occasions I’ve sought advice from my pastor and professional counselors I know. Christians should not hesitate to seek the help of qualified professionals when we go through difficulties.

Also, when facing hard times I seek to apply my theology to my situation. Here’s an example of biblical truth that’s helped me in my devotional time.

Many of historic Christianity’s greatest theologians have identified the Psalms as one of their favorite Old Testament books (e.g., Augustine, Luther, Calvin). It’s also one of my favorites, with Psalm 139 in particular possibly topping the list. Scholars generally view this psalm as consisting of four poetic stanzas or paragraphs (with the specific verses numbered accordingly: 1–6, 7–12, 13–18, 19–24).1 I appreciate this psalm because it is profoundly comforting. Its general theme is “God’s intimate knowledge of his people.”2

Psalm 139:1–6God Knows All about Us
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. 5 You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

This part of the psalm reveals that God has a detailed and deeply personal knowledge of everything about us, including our thoughts, words, and actions. We cannot evade the Creator and Redeemer’s infinite awareness of each of us. Such realization of God’s awesome knowledge can seem intimidating. Yet verse five’s “you lay your hand upon me” reflects a gentle, caring concern on the Lord’s part. As the Expository Bible Commentary notes: “The placement of the divine hand signifies protection and blessing.”3 The psalm writer (thought to be Israel’s King David) responds in verse six with an expression reflecting the finite creature’s astonishment and incomprehensibility concerning God’s limitless knowledge.

In the context of our suffering, this psalm assures us that the Lord knows, understands, and cares about our challenging conditions or circumstances. In light of how these poetic verses in Psalm 139 reflect God’s attribute of omniscience (all knowledge), theologian John Jefferson Davis offers this devotional application:

“God knows his children intimately. Even the very hairs of their head are numbered (Mt 10:30). This pervasive knowledge on God’s part is intended to be a comfort and source of security to his people.”4

Takeaway
As believers in Jesus Christ we don’t want to suffer or see the ones we love suffer, but pain and sorrow are part of the human condition in a fallen world. Concerning our mental and spiritual health, Christian psychologists Mark Cosgrove and James Mallory offer the following:

“Individuals need to take part in spiritual realities by entering into an ongoing relationship with a loving God. It is apparent in the Bible that God wants people to live with a certain mindset in order to know full mental and spiritual health.”5

Psalm 139 reveals that our Creator-Redeemer God has a plan for his children’s well-being, and we can be confident of his love and providential care even in the midst of pain and suffering.

    Astronomers’ quest to find another planet capable of supporting life continues in earnest. As they compile their findings, we all learn more about what life requires. The fact that Earth has avoided a collision with the Moon magnifies our planet’s rarity as an advanced life site.

    For advanced life to exist on a planet, that planet must reside simultaneously in 16 habitable zones, which include the known extragalactic habitable zone, the two known galactic habitable zones, and the 13 known planetary habitable zones. I have written extensively about these habitable zones in my books, Improbable Planet and Designed to the Core.1

    To date, astronomers have discovered and determined at least some of the orbital and physical features of 5,373 planets.2 Many of these planets reside in the known extragalactic and galactic habitable zones and the liquid water planetary habitable zone, but only one resides in all 16 of the known habitable zones. 

    Planet-Moon System Habitability Criteria
    Since the 1990s, astronomers have understood that advanced life is possible only on a rocky planet that is orbited by a moon that is a substantial fraction of the planet’s mass. In the case of the Earth-Moon system, the Moon’s mass is 1.23% Earth’s mass.3 This small percentage may not seem like much, but relative to its host planet’s mass the Moon is 52 times larger than any other known moon, namely Titan.

    It takes the extraordinarily large moon-planet mass ratio of the Earth-Moon system to stabilize Earth’s rotation axis tilt. Earth’s rotation axis tilt regularly oscillates between 22.04 and 24.50 degrees. By comparison, Mars’s rotation axis tilt varies from 0–60 degrees. Thanks to Earth’s stable rotation axis tilt, our climate is sufficiently stable to permit the existence of advanced life.

    The combination of the Moon’s high mass relative to Earth and its proximity (see figure) causes powerful lunar tidal forces on Earth. These tidal forces recycle life-critical nutrients all along the continental shelves, thereby enabling the biomass and biodiversity that advanced life needs.

    The Moon’s tidal forces have operated for the past 4.47 billion years4 to gradually slow down Earth’s rotation rate from just 3–4 hours per day to the present 24 hours per day. A 24-hour rotation rate is ideal for advanced life, whereas either a 23-hour or a 25-hour rotation rate would be a huge problem.5 Thanks to the Moon’s highly fine-tuned mass and rate of orbital recession from Earth, Earth attained a 24-hour rotation rate at the same time in solar system history when the Sun’s luminosity became stable enough for advanced life to exist.6  

    The Moon also rescued Earth from losing all of its atmosphere and surface water. During its first 700 million years, the Sun was blasting out particles and radiation that normally would have sputtered away all Earth’s atmosphere and water. Two of the Moon’s features prevented that outcome. The Moon’s strong magnetic field and proximity to Earth allowed its magnetic field to couple with Earth’s magnetic field. Both the early Earth and early Moon possessed hot liquid iron cores and were sufficiently close to one another that their mutual tidal force exertion circulated the liquid iron in their cores. This circulation generated powerful magnetic fields surrounding both bodies. Nothing less than the coupling together of the two magnetospheres would have preserved Earth’s atmosphere and its surface oceans.7    

    Lunar Doomsday
    Thanks to Earth’s amazingly fine-tuned Moon, an abundance of diverse life has thrived for 3.8 billion years on Earth’s surface. The Moon’s exquisitely designed features have protected advanced life and global civilization. However, the Moon will not always be a protector of life on Earth. A lunar doomsday is coming—but the Sun is on schedule to precede the Moon with its own doomsday.

    Since its formation 4.47 billion years ago, the Moon has been slowly spiraling away from Earth. Its orbital distance from Earth increases by 3.82 ± 0.07 centimeters/year.8

    Earth’s tidal forces exerted on the Moon have resulted in the Moon becoming tidally locked. Those tidal forces have slowed the Moon’s rotation rate to equal its revolution rate, causing one hemisphere of the Moon to always face Earth. At the same time, the Moon’s tidal forces exerted on Earth are slowing down Earth’s rotation rate. Eventually, Earth will become tidally locked to the Moon, but not for another 40–50 billion years. When that occurs, the Moon will stop spiralling away from Earth and begin to spiral inward. This inward spiral will result in the Moon crashing into Earth—the ultimate doomsday scenario for life. 

    However, long before this catastrophe occurs, the Sun will become a red giant star and incinerate both the Moon and Earth. This incineration event will occur in about another 4.5 billion years.  

    Unstable Moons in Exoplanet Systems
    Another rare feature of Earth’s Moon is that it has been dynamically stable over the entire period of Earth’s conceivable habitability. University of California at Los Angeles theoretical physicist Bradley Hansen, in a recently published paper, has demonstrated three ways that it may be common for large moons orbiting rocky planets in extrasolar planetary systems to be dynamically unstable.9  

    The rocky extrasolar planets discovered so far orbit their host stars at distances considerably smaller than Earth’s orbital distance from the Sun. Hansen first cites research that establishes that the rate of tidal evolution of planet-moon systems is inversely proportional to the planet’s orbital distance from its host star, to the host star’s mass, and to the planet’s mass.10

    Second, Hansen cites other research showing that it takes a collision between two or more rocky planets to form a large moon that subsequently orbits a rocky planet.11 Such a collision causes the planet to rotate more rapidly than it did before the collision. However, if the subsequent planetary rotation rate is too low, then the planet will extract angular momentum from its moon’s orbit, causing the moon to spiral inward and relatively quickly collide with its planet. On the other hand, if the planet’s subsequent rotation rate is sufficiently high, then angular momentum will be transferred to the moon, resulting in the moon spiraling outward and escaping the gravitation grip of its planet. For situations similar to the Earth-Moon system, where the host star exerts a substantial tide on the planet, the outward spiraling of the moon eventually reverses, resulting in a planet-moon collision. 

    Third, Hansen calculated that even in the case where the large moon escapes the gravitational grip of its planet, a collision of the moon with its original host planet is highly likely. When the moon spirals outward to the point where it no longer orbits its planet, it nonetheless continues to share the planet’s orbit about their host star. As such, the escaped moon will make repeated close encounters with its planet. Hansen demonstrated that “nearly all of the freed exomoons will eventually collide with the original host planet.”12        

    Tabby’s Star
    What effect would planet-moon collisions have on another star like the Sun? In 2015, the F-type main-sequence star, KIC 8462852, investigated by a team of astronomers led by Tabetha Boyajian, became a media sensation.13 Unusual luminosity fluctuations in the star that included dimming of up to 22% caused astronomers and laypeople alike to speculate that an extraterrestrial intelligent civilization had constructed a Dyson sphere around the star. This speculation garnered KIC 8462852 the nickname, Tabby’s star. 

    A Dyson sphere is a megastructure, hypothesized by physicist Freeman Dyson, encompassing a star that captures a large percentage of the star’s power output and transforms that power into a useful energy source for an intelligent civilization. Follow-up observations of KIC 8462852 extending through the end of 2017, made by Boyajian and her team showed wavelength-dependent dimming consistent with huge clouds of dust periodically blocking out some of KIC 8462852’s light, but not with an opaque alien megastructure, which would equally block out all wavelengths of light.14    

    Hansen’s study provides a reasonable explanation for KIC 8462852’s luminosity variations. One or more moons colliding with planets orbiting stars like KIC 8462852 would generate huge clouds of dust orbiting such stars that would well explain the observed dimming variations.  

    Yet More Lunar Design
    As Hansen explained, collisions between rocky planets and their large moons may sterilize otherwise habitable planets. Hansen has added yet another habitability requirement for planets. Advanced-life-habitable planets must be rocky planets that simultaneously reside in all 13 known planetary habitable zones and possess a moon that is about 1% the planet’s mass where that moon remains in a stable orbit about the planet for a long enough time period for advanced life to exist. 

    The probability for all these requirements to be met without invoking supernatural, super-intelligent Agency is absurdly remote.15 Thanks to Hansen’s research, the case for a supernatural, super-intelligent Agent has become scientifically stronger, demonstrating that the more scientists learn about nature the more evidence they uncover for the handiwork of a personal God.

    Question of the Week: Atheists keep telling me that homochirality is not a problem for naturalistic models for life’s origin. How do you respond?

    My Answer: All living cells contain proteins, DNA, and RNA. Without proteins, DNA, and RNA physical life is not possible. Proteins are long chains of amino acids and DNA and RNA molecules are long chains of nucleobases. Ribose sugars are required to link together the nucleobases.

    Proteins cannot be assembled unless all the amino acids are either 100% left-handed or 100% right-handed. Similarly, RNA and DNA molecules cannot be assembled unless all the ribose sugars are either 100% left-handed or 100% right-handed. Homochirality is where all the chiral molecules in a sample manifest a single-handed configuration.   

    At the 2017 ISSOL (International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life) conference at the University of California San Diego, which both Fazale Rana and I attended, it was acknowledged by all speakers who addressed homochirality that it was a huge problem for the origin of life. Under highly controlled laboratory conditions, as opposed to real-life naturalistic conditions, biochemists are able to preferentially destroy right-handed amino acids at a faster rate than left-handed amino acids. By this means, in a few of the many experiments conducted, samples that were 80% left-handed were achieved. However, when the biochemists extrapolated their results, they discovered that 100% of the amino acid samples would be destroyed long before homochirality would ever be achieved.
