Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

 

The serpent caused Adam and Eve a lot of problems in the Garden of Eden. Snakes continue to create difficulties today, especially for creationists and intelligent design proponents. However recent work by geneticists from the University of Georgia illustrates that this need not be the case.1

These investigators found that snakes possess some of the genetic machinery needed to make limbs. Specifically, the researchers identified enhancer sequences (which control gene expression) identical to the ones that cause limb development and growth in lizards. Many people point to this type of discovery as compelling evidence for biological evolution.

Many scientists presume that snakes evolved from lizards during the Cretaceous period. Accordingly, the evolutionary ancestors of modern-day snakes lost their front and hind limbs because of disuse. The anatomy of pythons and boa constrictors provides further support for this evolutionary scenario. These snakes—which are two of the most primitive modern-day snakes—possess reduced-hind limbs. Evolutionary biologists view these limbs as vestigial structures—anatomical remnants left behind by the evolutionary process.2 Snakes that are more modern than pythons and boas completely lack hind limbs.

In light of these anatomical comparisons, evolutionary biologists interpret the recent discovery in snake genomes as genetic vestiges of an evolutionary history—molecular fossils that corroborate the evolutionary story told by snake and lizard anatomy. Presumably, these sequences once played a role in developing the limbs of the lizard ancestor of snakes, but now the sequences are only present in modern-day snakes as discarded genetic sequences, no longer useful for limb development.

But what if these enhancer sequences are functional?

If they have utility, then it opens up the possibility of interpreting it as a shared designfeature between snakes and lizards. In this scenario, the Creator deployed the same genetic structures in reptile genomes to carry out related functional activities.

As it turns out, the University of Georgia scientists determined that the limb enhancers in the snake genome play a critical role in the development of the phallus. From a creation model perspective, this discovery explains why these enhancer sequences are in the snake genomes. In other words, these enhancer sequences have a broader range of function than previously thought. Even though they are no longer used for limb development, they still have a functional role by regulating gene expression needed for phallus formation.

Because of their commitment to the evolutionary paradigm, many biologists immediately conclude that DNA sequence elements must be junk if they haven’t been assigned a function. But our understanding of genome structure and function is in its infancy; thus, it is premature to draw these types of conclusions. As I detail in the expanded and updated edition of Who Was Adam?, over the last decade, we have discovered that virtually every class of so-called junk DNA displays function. These discoveries, and others (such as the insights provided by the University of Georgia researchers) provide reasons to view genomes as the Creator’s handiwork.

Shared DNA sequences don’t have to be interpreted as evidence for common descent. They can be taken as evidence for common design.

Christians have long agreed on the foundational truth that God is the Creator of the universe, Earth, and Earth’s life. Where many differ is not in devotion to Scripture, but in how they interpret the “days” described in Genesis 1.

Some understand these days as six consecutive 24-hour periods, a view known as young-earth creationism. Others read the same text and conclude that the word “day” (the Hebrew word yôm) represents longer periods of God’s creative activity. This approach is often called old-earth creationism.

Both perspectives begin with Scripture and seek to honor its authority. The difference lies in how each interprets the language and structure of the creation account, not in their commitment to God or his Word.

For Christians who wonder how scientific evidence for an ancient universe fits with a faithful reading of Genesis, old-earth creationism represents a historical understanding of God’s two revelations. It holds that God is both the Author of Scripture and the Creator of the natural world. Therefore, the two won’t ultimately contradict each other. God’s “two books”—the Bible and the created world—work together to reveal the same Creator.

Old-earth creationists recognize that while God’s two books are wholly reliable, human interpretations of both are not. Theology is our attempt to interpret Scripture; science is our attempt to interpret the natural world. No one has complete knowledge of either, and our assumptions can lead us astray. So when our theology and our science seem to conflict, old-earth creationists see that tension not as a reason to dismiss one or the other, but as a call from God to study both more carefully.

In the following sections, we’ll explore what old-earth creationists believe, how they interpret the creation days in Genesis, how their view compares to other creation perspectives, and why this discussion matters for Christians who want to take both the Bible and the evidence of nature seriously.

What Is Old-Earth Creationism?

Old-earth creationism is the view that God created the universe, Earth, and all life over long periods of time—billions rather than thousands of years.

Where it differs from young-earth creationism (YEC) is in timing. The old-earth creation view asserts that the “days” of Genesis are not 24 hours each, but rather long spans of God’s creative activity.

From an old-earth creationism perspective, scientific evidence for an ancient universe and Earth—including radiometric dating, geological records, expansion of the universe, and the light from distant stars and galaxies—is consistent with God’s creative work and with Scripture.

Current scientific measurements place the age of the universe at roughly 13.8 billion years and the age of the Earth at about 4.6 billion years.

This idea that the six creation days may not be six 24-hour periods has deep historical roots. Early Jewish and Christian thinkers, including Philo, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Basil, and Augustine, allowed for creation time periods other than 144 hours. This means the idea of long creation days is not a modern compromise with science. It predates modern science by more than a thousand years

What Do Old-Earth Creationists Believe?

Old-earth creationists like those at Reasons to Believe see the universe as ancient—billions of years old—yet shaped and designed by a personal, purposeful God. Their core convictions include that God reveals himself through both Scripture and the natural world (dual revelation); that the “days” of Genesis represent long, consecutive time periods (the day-age view); that God directly created new forms of life at key moments in Earth’s history; and that Adam and Eve were real, historical individuals from whom all humanity descends. We explore these more fully below.

Is Old-Earth Creationism Biblical?

How can we assess if old-earth creationism is biblical? For many, this is less a question of “Could God create in six days?” but “What does Genesis mean by ‘day’?”

This matters because our answer shapes whether Christians see science as a threat to their faith or as a witness to the same God who inspired Scripture.

The Hebrew word translated as day, yôm, has four literal definitions: part of the daylight hours, all the daylight hours, a 24-hour calendar day, or a long, finite time period. Old-earth creationists hold that the context of Genesis 1 supports the fourth meaning. (For a deeper look at what the Bible says about Earth’s age, see this blog post.)

Core Tenets of Old-Earth Creationism

If Scripture and creation truly speak in harmony, what does that look like in practice? Old-earth creationists ground their view in several core convictions:

Dual Revelation

Old-earth creationists hold to the historic Christian teaching, often called dual revelation, that God reveals himself through both Scripture and the natural world. Because both come from a God for whom it is impossible to lie (Hebrews 6:18), they work together in harmony. This is not a modern idea—the Belgic Confession (1561) describes creation as “a beautiful book” through which God makes himself known, alongside his written Word (drawn from Psalm 19:1–9 and Romans 1:20). Reasons to Believe (RTB), founded in 1986 by astrophysicist Hugh Ross, has been a leading voice for this view, showing how science and Scripture function as two independent witnesses that corroborate one another where they overlap.

A Universe Both Ancient and Faithful

Multiple independent lines of evidence, from astronomy to geology to nuclear physics, converge on the same picture: an ancient cosmos, roughly 13.8 billion years old, on an Earth about 4.6 billion years old. The prophet Jeremiah reminds us why we can trust these measurements: God made the laws that govern heaven and earth fixed and unchanging (Jeremiah 33:25). The constancy of natural laws over billions of years reflects the faithfulness of the God who set them in place.

Day-Age View

Why do we interpret the Genesis 1 creation days as consecutive long time periods?

One of the literal definitions for yôm (day) is a long, finite time period. The Hebrew words for evening (‘ereb) and morning (boqer) can likewise mean ending and beginning. The first six creation days all conclude with an “evening was, morning was” phrase—but the seventh day has no such marker. This implies God’s seventh day has not yet ended, a reading confirmed by both Psalm 95:11 and Hebrews 4:1–11, which state that we are still in God’s seventh day.

If the seventh day has lasted thousands of years at minimum, it is not a 24-hour day. The scientific evidence confirms this pattern. The fossil record documents the appearance of new species throughout Earth’s pre-human history, but no new species have appeared since humans arrived on the scene. This is exactly what we’d expect if God ceased his creation work on the seventh day, as Genesis 2 describes.

Genesis 1:27 says God created humans, male and female, during the sixth day. Genesis 2 details what happened within that day: God created Adam, placed him in Eden, had him tend the garden, observe all the animals, and name each one. Only after all this did God create Eve. When Adam first saw her, the word he spoke—happa’am—means “at long last.” Both the number of events and Adam’s own response suggest the sixth day, like the seventh, was far longer than 24 hours.

Some assert that the fourth of the ten commandments implies 24-hour creation days. However, the Bible addresses Sabbath periods of different durations.

Direct Creation

Old-earth creationists accept that species adapt within their kind—what scientists call microevolution. But they hold that natural processes alone cannot explain the sudden appearance of new, complex life-forms in the fossil record or the unique capacities of human beings. These transitions in the fossil record reflect moments of direct divine action, with God introducing new forms of life at different points in Earth’s history, consistent with the pattern presented in Genesis 1.

This view rejects macroevolution—the idea that all life descends from a single common ancestor through undirected processes. Instead, the complexity of living organisms, the fine-tuning of their systems, and the gaps in the fossil record point to a God who actively and purposefully created life throughout Earth’s long history.

Historical Adam and Eve

Old-earth creationists affirm that Adam and Eve were real, historical individuals specially created by God, from whom all human beings are descended. Adam was formed from the dust of the ground and given life when God breathed into him; Eve was created directly by God from Adam’s side.

This sets humanity apart from all other creatures and establishes humans as bearers of God’s image. Because Adam and Eve are historical, the doctrines that depend on them—the fall, original sin, and Christ’s redemption of a fallen humanity—stand on historical ground, not metaphor.

The Flood That Swept Humanity

According to the old-earth creationism view, the Genesis flood destroyed all humans outside the ark and their domesticated animals—but not the entire planet. It was worldwide in the sense that the whole world of ungodly people was wiped out (2 Peter 2:5). Noah and his family were the only survivors.

Regions not occupied by humans were not flooded. The Hebrew supports this reading. The word used throughout the flood account, eretz, often translated “earth,” can also mean “land” or “region.” The second most common word, ‘adama, refers to land inhabited or tilled by humans—which makes sense, since only land inhabited by humans can be damaged by human sin. In Genesis 8, haraba is used for the flooded land, a Hebrew word that never refers to the entirety of Earth’s land surface. The purpose of the flood was to rid the world of human wickedness and prevent humanity’s self-destruction. This reading affirms the authority of Scripture and the historicity of the flood while remaining consistent with evidence from geology, genetics, and archaeology.

Death Before the Fall

How could death exist before the rebellion in Eden? Paul tells us, “sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people” (Romans 5:12). Of all Earth’s creatures, only humans sin. By saying death came to all people, rather than all life, Paul implies that microbial, plant, and animal death occurred before Adam and Eve.

Scripture reinforces this picture. Job describes a world where lions hunt and feed by God’s design (Job 38:39), and the psalmist says lions “seek their food from God” (Psalm 104:21). Animal death is not a punishment for human sin but part of the ecosystem God established. The scientific evidence agrees. The fossil record shows that animal death and extinction occurred long before modern humans appeared. The enormous abundance of biodeposits—coal, oil, natural gas, limestone, marble, gypsum—testifies to ages of life and death before humans were created.

A common concern is that death before the fall undermines the gospel. But this view preserves the doctrines that matter most: the uniqueness of humanity as God’s image-bearers, the reality of Adam’s fall, and the necessity of Christ’s redemptive work. Human death—spiritual separation from God—entered through Adam’s sin. That is the death Christ came to conquer.

Animal death before the fall does not undermine that promise. In this view, human spiritual death and separation from God are the direct results of Adam’s sin, while nonhuman death reflects the normal functioning of the natural world God made.

How Does Old-Earth Creationism Compare to Other Creation Views?

Other Creation Perspectives

The table below compares four widely discussed creation views. Two points of detail worth noting: Evolutionary creationism is sometimes called theistic evolution, but there is a distinction. Unlike some theistic evolutionists, evolutionary creationists hold that God directly intervened in miraculous ways to shape the universe, solar system, and Earth so it could support a great abundance and diversity of life.

Where evolutionary creationism parts company with old-earth creationism is on the question of life’s development: evolutionary creationism accepts macroevolution and common descent, while old-earth creationism holds that God directly created new forms of life at key points in history.

Intelligent design (ID) is not a creation model based on a particular reading of Genesis but an apologetic framework. It argues that features of the natural world—such as biological complexity and the fine-tuning of the universe—are best explained by an intelligent cause. Because ID does not specify the age of the earth or identify the Designer in biblical terms, Christians, Jews, Muslims, or even nontheists may affirm it. Many old-earth creationists draw on ID arguments as scientific support for the claim that life shows marks of purposeful design.

What Unites Us in the Creation Conversation

Christians hold different views on creation, but old-earth creationism offers something distinctive: a reading of Genesis that takes the Hebrew text seriously and seeks alignment with what God has revealed through the natural world. It affirms that “in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) and that “through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3)—while also embracing the full weight of the evidence he left for us to find.

Thoughtful Christians reach different conclusions on these questions, and the conversation is worth having. But if the same God who authored Scripture also made the heavens and the earth, we should expect his two works to tell a consistent story. Old-earth creationism says they do.

Is There a Conflict Between Science and Christianity?

At Reasons to Believe, we don’t see a true conflict between science and Christianity. Instead, we believe any apparent tension reflects misunderstandings or misinterpretations—not an inherent clash.

Relationship Between Science and Christianity

A Shared History of Discovery

When we think about the relationship between science and Christianity, perhaps it’s easy to assume they’ve always been at odds.

But history tells a different story.

Many of the greatest scientific advancements were born out of Christian thought and values.

During the Scientific Revolution—a period that shaped much of modern science—many pioneers of discovery were deeply committed Christians.

  • Isaac Newton, often called one of the greatest minds in science, saw studying the natural world as a way to glorify God. 
  • Johannes Kepler, who uncovered the laws of planetary motion, famously described his work as “thinking God’s thoughts after him.” 
  • And let’s not forget Gregor Mendel, the father of modern genetics, who was a monk studying pea plants in his monastery garden.

These figures are only a small fraction of influential thinkers who didn’t see a conflict between their faith and their scientific pursuits; rather, they viewed them as interconnected paths to understanding truth.

A Deeper Connection Between Science and Christianity

This connection isn’t just historical, either. If we take a closer look, Christianity played a critical role in the development of science itself. The belief in an orderly, rational Creator inspired early scientists to search for patterns and laws in the natural world. They assumed that if the universe was designed by God, it would make sense.

And remarkably, it does!

Science and Christianity share a foundational belief built on order and purpose—concepts essential for scientific exploration.

It’s clear the two are not strangers to each other. While they may ask different questions, they often meet in fascinating ways.

Science thrives on exploring the how—how things happen, how the world God created works.

On the other hand, Christianity focuses on the why—why we exist, why the universe matters.

Together, these perspectives can provide a fuller view of the world and our place within it.

This is why we believe the relationship between science and Christianity can’t be thought of as completely separate. They’ve influenced each other for centuries and continue to do so. Far from being opposing forces, they can work together to uncover deeper truths about creation and the Creator.

Christian Faith vs. Scientific Research

The key to understanding this relationship between the Christian faith and scientific research lies in how we view science and theology. Both are ways God reveals himself to us. Through the Bible, God communicates specific truths—what we call special revelation. Through nature, God reveals himself in a broader, more general way—often referred to as general revelation

As Christians, we believe both of these are authored by God and, therefore, cannot truly contradict each other.

Here’s the catch, though: we humans are fallible.

Our interpretations of Scripture and our interpretations of nature are imperfect. When a conflict arises—like a disagreement over the age of the Earth or the origin of the universe—it’s a signpost that we may have misunderstood one or both revelations.

It’s not Scripture or nature that’s wrong; it’s how we’ve interpreted them.

For example, early Christians like Augustine warned that we need to approach Scripture carefully when addressing scientific claims, recognizing the cultural context and literary style. Similarly, science often revises old interpretations to account for new data. This back-and-forth pursuit of truth and a growing body of knowledge is what allows us to grow in both faith and understanding.

When Christian theology and science seem to be at odds, we must take the time to dig deeper, as well as give room for uncertainties. Instead of choosing between the two, we can investigate both with patience and humility.

After all, the God who inspired the Bible is the same Creator who designed the universe. Apparent conflicts can often be resolved not by rejecting either but by refining our perspective.

The Galileo Affair

One of the most well-known examples of the supposed science and faith conflict is the Galileo affair. Galileo Galilei, a renowned scientist of the seventeenth century, supported the idea that the Earth orbits the Sun—a theory originally proposed by Copernicus.

At the time, the church held the geocentric view that the Earth was the center of the universe. Galileo’s findings seemed to contradict Scripture as it was interpreted then, leading to his trial and condemnation by the Roman Catholic Church.

However, many historians now view the Galileo affair more as a clash of egos, politics, and miscommunication rather than a fundamental opposition to Christian beliefs in science. The church leaders of Galileo’s time were grappling over who got to interpret Scripture and with how to interpret Scripture in light of new scientific discoveries. Catholics and Protestants still disagree over who gets to interpret Scripture, but both have developed powerful tools and new perspectives that they use today.

Over time, the church acknowledged its mistake, and Galileo is now celebrated—not as a figure against faith, but as someone who helped pave the way for a deeper understanding of God’s creation.

Modern Science Conflicts

The push and pull between science and religion hasn’t disappeared. Modern science debates often center around issues like climate change, bioethics, or the origins of the universe.

Take, for example, the question of the big bang. While some see this theory as a challenge to Christian beliefs, many others, including scientists who are Christian, view it as complementary. The big bang strongly points to a beginning for the universe—a concept that aligns with the biblical notion of creation.

Similarly, advances in genetics and medicine sometimes raise ethical questions that seem to put science and faith at odds. Issues like gene editing or end-of-life care can feel like uncharted territory. But through open conversation, many Christians can engage with these advancements thoughtfully, weighing the moral principles of their faith alongside the benefits of scientific progress.

Building Bridges

Dialogue is key to resolving conflicts and fostering understanding. By talking openly and listening to one another, Christians are finding ways to reconcile faith with scientific discovery.

Ultimately, such conversations remind us that both religion and science seek truth—they just approach it in different yet complementary ways. Conflict often comes when we limit ourselves to either-or thinking, but harmony emerges when we embrace both-and perspectives, recognizing that God speaks through both Scripture and his creation.

Is There Conflict Between Science and Faith?

At first glance, science and faith might look like they’re standing on opposite sides of a dividing line. That initial state looks a lot like a beginning—a moment when all space, time, and matter came into existence.

In reality, sexual orientation, like most human traits, is influenced by a complex combination of genetic, environmental, and developmental factors. It’s not determined by a single gene or even a small group of genes. Instead, it’s the result of an interaction between our genes and our environment. It is also shaped by our experiences.

Recent scientific studies have shed more light on the genetic aspects of sexual orientation. In 2019, a landmark study published in Science examined the DNA of nearly half a million people. The researchers identified five genetic variants associated with same-sex behavior. These variants accounted for less than 1% of the differences in sexual behavior among the study participants.

This study was the largest of its kind to date, and it confirmed what many scientists had long suspected: there is no single “gay gene” but many genes, each with small effects, that appear to influence sexual behavior. The researchers estimated that genetics could explain between 8% and 25% of the variation in same-sex behavior among the population studied.

Is Homosexuality Genetic at All?

Sexual orientation appears to develop and potentially fluctuate over time, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood. This doesn’t mean that sexual orientation is a choice, but rather that it’s a complex trait that emerges through development, influenced by both nature and nurture.

It’s also important to note that the experiences of homosexual individuals vary widely. While genetics plays a role in sexual orientation, it’s far from the whole story. Other biological factors, as well as environmental and developmental influences, can contribute to an individual’s sexual orientation.

Prenatal Hormones

One area of research focuses on the role of prenatal hormones in shaping sexual orientation. Some studies suggest that exposure to certain hormones in the womb, particularly testosterone, may influence sexual orientation later in life. For example, women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a condition that results in exposure to high levels of male hormones in utero, are more likely to report same-sex attractions than women without this condition.

The Fraternal Birth Order Effect

Another intriguing biological factor is the “fraternal birth order effect.” Research has shown that men with older brothers are more likely to be gay, with the likelihood increasing with each additional older brother. This effect is small, ranging from a 2 to 3 percent chance of being gay for a firstborn male to 8 to 10 percent for a male child born with 5 or more older brothers. This effect is specific to biological brothers who shared the same womb; it doesn’t apply to adopted brothers. Scientists hypothesize that this might be due to a maternal immune response that affects brain development in subsequent male pregnancies.

Brain Structure

Some studies have found differences in brain structure between heterosexual and homosexual individuals. For instance, neuroscientist Simon LeVay found that a certain region of the hypothalamus was, on average, smaller in gay men compared to straight men. While widely accepted, LeVay’s results have been criticized. However, it’s important to note that if real, these differences don’t necessarily indicate a cause of sexual orientation—they could be a result of it or of other factors entirely.

Environmental and Developmental Factors

While biological factors play a significant role, environmental and developmental influences also contribute to sexual orientation. These might include childhood experiences, cultural factors, and personal relationships. It’s crucial to understand that these environmental factors don’t “cause” homosexuality in a simplistic sense but interact with biological predispositions in complex ways that aren’t fully understood.

Despite decades of research, no evidence supports the idea that parenting or early childhood experiences cause homosexuality. The consensus among psychologists and other mental health professionals is that sexual orientation is not a choice.

Biblical Sexuality

Sexuality in the Bible

As we consider these scientific findings, it’s crucial to examine what the Bible teaches about sexuality. Scripture provides clear guidelines for sexual behavior while also offering a framework for understanding human nature and God’s design for relationships.

The Bible teaches that sexual expression should be exclusively between a man and woman in a covenantal relationship made before God (marriage). This teaching is evident in passages such as Genesis 2:24, which states, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” Jesus reaffirms this union in Matthew 19:4–6, and it’s further emphasized in Hebrews 13:4.

Scripture also clearly prohibits sexual behavior and activity outside of marriage, including both heterosexual and homosexual behavior. This is evident in passages such as Exodus 20:14 (the commandment against adultery), Leviticus 18:22, and Romans 1:26–27.

It’s important to note that while the Bible condemns homosexual behavior, it doesn’t condemn people who experience same-sex attraction. The distinction between attraction or orientation and behavior is crucial. Many faithful Christians experience same-sex attraction but choose to live in accordance with biblical teachings on sexuality.

Sexual Orientation for Christians

At first glance, the scientific findings about the biological basis of sexual orientation might seem at odds with biblical teachings, but a deeper examination reveals they’re not necessarily in conflict.

First, it’s important to recognize the Bible doesn’t specifically address the concept of sexual orientation as we understand it today. Scripture focuses on behavior rather than attraction or identity. This distinction allows for the possibility that some individuals might experience same-sex attraction due to biological factors beyond their control, even as the Bible calls them to live according to God’s design for sexuality.

Second, the complex, multifactorial nature of sexual orientation aligns with the Christian understanding of human nature as affected by sin. In Christian theology, the fall (humanity’s rebellion against God) has impacted every aspect of human existence. This insight means that genetic or biological predispositions toward certain behaviors or orientations don’t necessarily reflect God’s original design.

Third, the fact that genetics plays a role in sexual orientation doesn’t negate human responsibility or the relevance of biblical teachings. We know genetic factors influence many aspects of human behavior, from addiction tendencies to personality traits, yet we still hold people accountable for their actions. The same principle applies to sexuality.

Lastly, the scientific findings on sexual orientation actually align with the biblical view of human complexity. Scripture portrays humans as intricate beings, fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), with depths that even we don’t fully understand. The complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and developmental factors in shaping sexual orientation reflects this biblical portrayal of human complexity.

Sexual Orientation for Non-Christians

As we grapple with these complex issues, it’s crucial that we engage in loving, respectful dialogue. This applies both within the Christian community and in our interactions with those who may hold different views.

Within the church, we need to create accountability structures for individuals to share their experiences and struggles with sexuality. This means fostering an environment of grace and understanding, where people can be honest without fear of judgment or rejection.

In our interactions with the broader culture, we need to be prepared to articulate our beliefs with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). This means being well-informed about both the scientific research and biblical teachings, and being able to explain how they relate to each other.

It’s also important to listen well. Many homosexual individuals have experienced hurt or rejection from Christians or churches. By listening to their stories and experiences, we can better understand their perspectives and help show Christ’s love.

Redeeming Sexuality

For many Christians who experience same-sex attraction, reconciling their faith with their sexuality is a deeply personal and often challenging journey. Some choose to pursue celibacy, viewing it as a way to honor God with their sexuality.

Regardless of the path chosen, the journey of faith and sexuality often involves wrestling with deep questions of identity, belonging, and purpose. The church has a crucial role to play in supporting individuals on this journey, providing community, spiritual guidance, and unconditional love.

Scientifically, the migration of humans refers to the remarkable journey our ancestors made long ago to fill the earth. These migrations define our human story today. Early human migrations marked humankind’s steps as they ventured from their origins and spread across the globe.

The story of human origins is filled with the movement of populations from one region to another over thousands of years. These migrations shaped societies and cultures across continents.

Beginning possibly as early as 70,000 years ago, driven by environmental changes and the pursuit of new horizons, this epic journey saw our ancestors navigate challenges and pursue opportunities.

But how and when did Homo sapiens spread and become a global population?

Coupled with scientific insights and enriched by biblical narratives, this exploration will offer a comprehensive view of when, where, and how these migrations occurred.

What Is Human Migration?

Human migration is the movement of people from one location to another. This process has led to the development of communities, cultures, and civilizations throughout history. Migration includes not only physical relocation but also the exchange of ideas, technologies, and beliefs that occur as populations settle in new regions.

Scientists use three main ways to study the timeline and paths the earliest humans took when they migrated around the world. A brief look at these can give us a clearer picture of how researchers piece together the history of humans and how we came to exist across the globe.

First, researchers date the oldest human remains found in various regions. By plotting the findings on a world map, they can trace back to where humans first originated and the routes they possibly followed.

Second, archaeological artifacts from Homo sapiens (modern humans) are mapped according to their dates and locations. This mapping reveals not only where our ancestors lived but also their cultural and technological advancements.

Third, molecular anthropology examines similarities and differences in DNA sequences so scientists can map relationships among human groups. This method gives important insight into human migrations because it doesn’t require that physical evidence must be left behind.

Theories on the Migration of Humans

When we consider modern theories of human migration, the Out of Africa theory is the primary scientific explanation for humanity’s migration. This model, often referred to as the replacement model, suggests that humanity began roughly 150,000 to 200,000 years ago in Africa.

Then, around 50,000 to 70,000 years ago, humans first migrated from East Africa, reaching the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and eventually North and South America. This grand movement wasn’t just a journey of distance but also of replacement. As early humans ventured into new territories, they gradually replaced existing Neanderthal populations.

In full, this theory suggests a dynamic and transformative period in the history of humans, where our species spread and adapted to the different environments around the earth.

The Out of Africa theory lets us see how interconnected our past is and sets the stage for exploring the finer details of the story of our early ancestors.

How Does the Bible Support This Theory?

While the Out of Africa theory is primarily rooted in evolutionary science, it also aligns with several details in the Bible and in the human origins model we hold at Reasons to Believe.

This model suggests that humanity emerged recently from a single location—consistent with the biblical account of the Garden of Eden. The RTB model places the Garden of Eden at the bottom of the Persian Gulf today and may have extended into East Africa. This location fits well with the scientific understanding of early human migration.

In Genesis 10, after the flood, the Bible describes the spread of humanity from a central point. This idea mirrors the migration patterns hypothesized by scientists of movement from Africa to the Middle East and beyond. This surface-level connection between the Out of Africa model and biblical texts invites us to further consider how ancient Scriptures and modern science can complement each other.

Other Relevant Theories

For a wider view on the topic, let’s consider other migration theories, even if some have fallen out of favor. Considering other views helps to solidify our positioning and broaden our thinking.

One such theory is multiregionalism. This model suggests that modern humans evolved simultaneously in different regions of the world from earlier hominin populations. However, as our understanding of human genetics, the fossil record, and archaeology has deepened, anthropologists have largely set aside multiregionalism. 

Another theory to consider is the assimilation model. This hypothesis suggests that as Homo sapiens moved out of Africa, they interbred with other hominin populations, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, rather than entirely replacing them, modern humans and these ancient groups merged into a single population. It is clear that full assimilation didn’t happen. While it is true that modern humans interbred with Neanderthals and Denisovans, they remained distinct with only trace amounts of genetic material present in modern human DNA. The great human migrations are believed to have begun around 50,000 to 70,000 years ago when early humans began to move out of East Africa and embark on an adventure that would span continents and millennia.

Evidence for the first leg of this migration saw our ancestors travel through the Middle East. From there, they went into Europe and Asia, gradually spreading across these vast landscapes.

The final stages of this epic journey saw humans crossing into the Americas, a monumental feat that marked the culmination of a long and expansive migration process starting from East Africa.

Why Did Early Humans Migrate?

Scientists think the early migrations were not primarily about survival (forced migration) but about voluntary migration. Researchers believe humans embarked on a journey of discovery, change, and expansion that led to the occupation of new lands.

The Scientific Perspective: Environmental Changes

From a scientific perspective, human migrations out of Africa were predominantly driven by cultural challenges, such as disease and significant environmental changes. Africa, at the time, was thought to be marked by severe drought conditions that pushed early humans to seek more fertile land.

This period coincided with the “greening” of the Middle East, where ample resources awaited those bold enough to venture out. This shift provided both an escape from worsening conditions and an opportunity for a better life in new territories.

From a biblical perspective, migration flows are seen as an act of divine providence. According to Scripture, human movement was either “commanded”—in the form of a decree—or “forced” directly by God’s hand.

Initially, at the point of creation and again after the flood, humans were instructed to “multiply and fill the earth.” How can they fill the earth unless they migrate?

Yet, in one account, they resisted, choosing instead to settle and build the Tower of Babel. It was here that God intervened by confounding human language and compelling people to scatter across the globe:

So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth” (Genesis 11:8).

This biblical account aligns with the rapid migrations suggested by scientific evidence. The idea that accessible routes with abundant resources were part of God’s providence offers a profound understanding of how these great migrations were undertaken. Humans moved not just by necessity but also by divine design.

The RTB Model: A Biblical Perspective

One of the striking aspects of the migration was its rapidity, which is backed by evidence. The coastal routes, often referred to as “coastal superhighways” provided the passageways for these migrations.

Coastal highways played a significant role in speeding up migrations. These routes were stable environments that removed the need for complex clothing or new tools. Coastal highways also provided reliable food sources from the sea and fresh water from rivers leading into the coasts.

In the grand scheme, this amount of time and distance per year is not excessive and could be easily accomplished.

Fossilized remains and artifacts found in regions like East Africa, the Middle East, and Asia trace the journey of Homo sapiens as they spread across the globe. Key sites such as Jebel Faya in the United Arab Emirates and the Levant (today’s Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria) have evidence of human presence dating back over 100,000 years—supporting the idea of early migrations through these regions.

The coastal superhighways are believed to have played a significant role in human dispersal. While much of the evidence along these routes has been lost to rising sea levels, inland archaeological sites provide a glimpse into the lives of early humans who followed rivers away from the coasts. Tools, skeletal remains, and other artifacts found along river systems like the Tigris-Euphrates and the Indus River further show how early humans adapted to the different environments during their migrations.

Science further supports RTB’s model through genetic evidence. Both mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosomal DNA research support the idea of human migration starting from a common point. Genetic data not only reinforces the idea of a rapid spread but also illustrates the interconnectedness of human populations—that we are all one people—as they migrated and settled across different continents.

Great Human Migrations: Europe

Genetic markers in European populations show that their origins can be linked back to East African (Ethiopian) groups, especially those close to the Middle East.

Mitochondrial DNA studies show the genetic traits of people living outside Africa have subparts of African mitochondrial DNA sequences, called haplotypes. Two important haplotypes, known as M and N, have been key to understanding these migrations. M haplotypes are usually found in Asia, while N haplotypes are mainly seen in western Asia and Europe.

The Route Through Central Asia

The journey from the Middle East to Europe wasn’t a straight path. Instead, it took a winding route through central Asia. Y-chromosomal data helps create a more detailed map. Two dominant Y-chromosome haplotypes in Europe, M173 and M17, seem to come from the M45 type—common in central Asian populations—and traces back to the M89 type found in the Middle East.

Studies place the origin of M173 about 30,000 years ago, and it serves as a significant milestone in the migration timeline.

The third prominent Y-chromosomal haplotype in Europe is known as M172 and it emerged about 10,000 years ago. It also came from M89 and likely represents human migrations due to the rise of agriculture as it changed the culture and economy of Europe.

Great Human Migrations: Asia

Genetic markers from Asian populations reveal a deep connection to East African origins. This African link is foundational, as all genetic markers found among Asian groups trace back to these early populations.

Mitochondrial DNA variants, haplotypes C, D, E, and G, are strong among groups with historical ties to South and East Asia, and even the Americas. They all descend from the M haplotype variant rooted in East African populations. Studies estimate that the M haplotype originated between 25,000 and 80,000 years ago.

Y-chromosome data matches these findings closely. Prominent Y-chromosome haplotypes in East Asia, notably C and D, can be traced back to M168, which also originated in East Africa and provides more evidence for migration from a common ancestor.

Studies estimate that M168 appeared between 31,000 and 79,000 years ago, with other estimates ranging from 56,000 to 81,000 and 36,000 to 109,000 years ago.

This haplotype doesn’t appear in any other global populations and can also be traced back to the M168 haplotype from East Africa.

Crossing the Waters to Sahul

During the last ice age, the landmass known as Sahul—made up of modern-day Australia, New Guinea, and Tasmania—was separated from Asia by a strait over 50 miles wide, even with the lower sea levels.

To reach Sahul, early humans had to have the knowledge and skill to build and navigate seaworthy vessels. This requirement for sea travel suggests they had advanced cognitive abilities and technological understanding.

Anthropologists propose that the first Australians embarked on numerous voyages and hopped from island to island to complete their journey.

The First Human Migration to America

Scientists generally agree that the initial settlers of the Americas came from Asia and likely crossed the Bering Strait on a land bridge that once connected the two continents. This crossing was a significant milestone in human migration, yet the exact timing and route of these migrations remain the subject of ongoing debate.

The fossil record provides some clues. The oldest human remains in the Americas date between 13,500 and 9,500 years ago. However, these findings do not necessarily point to a single mass migration event. Instead, many scholars believe settling the Americas involved multiple migratory waves, possibly from both northeast and southern Asia.

The Clovis Culture and Beyond

The Clovis culture, a people group identified by unique stone tools, is often considered the earliest well-documented human presence in North America. This culture suggests a rapid spread of humans across the continent. Around 12,000 years ago, other groups like the Folsom culture began to emerge and show a diverse and complex pattern of settlement.

Some researchers think the Clovis people were among the first to reach North America, while others believe there were people before them. Limited and incomplete evidence from early humans in the Americas drives this debate and makes it difficult to clearly understand the early migration patterns.

Five key mitochondrial DNA haplotypes (A, B, C, D, and X) help us trace their ancestry. We are all the descendants of immigrants that bear the image of God.

Compassion and Hospitality

The Bible stresses that fellow human beings should treat strangers and migrants with compassion and kindness. Exodus 22:21 says, “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” This passage calls us to remember our own pasts and to treat others with the grace and empathy we would wish for ourselves.

Ephesians 2:11–22 expands on this theme by inviting all people to become part of God’s family. It reminds us that, spiritually speaking, we were all once strangers and aliens until Jesus Christ welcomed us as citizens in his kingdom.

Who Were Adam and Eve?

Adam and Eve were the first human beings and the original ancestors of the human racecreated by God in his own image (Genesis 1:27). They were the first man, Adam, and first woman, Eve.

This distinction of being made in God’s image bestows a one-of-a-kind role in creation, setting the stage for humanity’s journey through the ages of history.

According to Genesis, they were not only the first human beings but the exclusive and definitive ancestors from whom all humanity are descendants. “Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living” (Genesis 3:20).

The Adam and Eve story is a testament to the complexity of human nature (as God’s image bearers) and the divine intention behind our existence. At the same time, it offers fertile ground for both theological reflection and scientific inquiry.

How Did God Create Adam and Eve?

In Genesis 2, we’re given a vivid account of how God created the first humans. “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).

Adam was shaped from the dust of the earth by the hand of God. The Hebrew word, yatzar, describes God’s creative work, which forms the image of a potter shaping or molding the ground or soil (afar) into the first human. From a human perspective, it was a humble beginning, and yet one that was transformed when God breathed life into him. In the Hebrew, the word used to describe God imparting his breath to Adam (vayyippach) connotes intimacy. This divine breath set him apart from all other creatures.

This act of divine respiration signified more than just the animation of a body. It was the infusion of a spirit—making Adam, and all humankind, singularly unique in creation. We were created with distinction and purpose.

Eve was then created. The Hebrew word that describes her creation (banah) indicates that she was Adam rebuilt. She was made from Adam’s side emphasizing the intimate connection and equality of God’s design between man and woman.

Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden

The Bible explains that God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden to care for it, marking the start of his journey. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Adam was created, at least in part, for the purpose of caring for God’s creation.

Adam was tasked with naming the animals and yet, as busy as that assignment was, God recognized Adam’s need for companionship. God then created Eve, bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh (Genesis 2:23). Together, they were to cultivate the garden and establish authority and dominion over the earth while living in harmony with all that had been entrusted to them.

In Eden, there existed two trees that God had created. God permitted Adam and Eve to partake of everything except the fruit of these two trees: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

It’s here that a pivotal event occurred that altered the course of human history forever.

The Fall: What Did Adam and Eve Do?

Adam and Eve rebelled against God’s command and ate the fruit from the forbidden tree: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it” (Genesis 3:6).  

Their disobedience, sparked by the serpent, often identified as Satan, was driven by a desire to be like God. Through subtle persuasion, the serpent sowed seeds of doubt and ambition within Eve, painting a picture of enlightenment and power that lay beyond the forbidden fruit.

This act introduced sin and human death into mankind’s experience, forever changing the relationship between God and the humans he created. Because of Eve and Adam’s sin, all of humanity is born into a sinful state. This condition is known as original sin.

Who Ate the Apple: Adam or Eve?

In the story of Adam and Eve, there’s a common misconception that adds an extra twist to the narrative: the infamous apple as the forbidden fruit. 

But was it really an apple?

People often represent the forbidden fruit as an apple, but the Bible doesn’t say what the fruit was—only that it was the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This little detail tends to get lost in translation (quite literally), as the image of a tempting apple has become ingrained in our cultural mind.

The biblical story says that Eve ate of the forbidden fruit and shared it with Adam. “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it” (Genesis 3:6). What’s noteworthy here is that Adam was not deceived or persuaded by Eve. Instead, Adam made a conscious choice.

Despite being given a direct command from God not to eat from the tree, Adam accepted the fruit from Eve. He ate from the forbidden fruit and disobeyed God. Adam’s sin was the same as Eve’s.

So, who ate the “apple”? They both did. And though their sin incurred God’s righteous judgment, a second Adam would come to Earth to redeem sinners from their sinful state and to be reconciled with their Creator forever. We’ll explore that part of the story later. 

Scientific Facts About the Story of Adam and Eve

The Adam and Eve story and the Genesis creation account sit at the crossroads of faith and science. Skeptics of the Christian faith say that the story lacks credibility, but Christian scholars offer a fascinating parallel between the biblical and scientific accounts of human origins.

According to the Bible, Adam and Eve were made directly by God. This depiction leaves little room for combining God’s creative process with evolutionary views that believe humans evolved from ancestral apelike beings over millions of years.

Mainstream science affirms a gradual evolutionary process where humans share a common ancestry with great apes, tracing back over six million years. This model is supported by three primary lines of evidence. But each can be refuted or reframed when looked at from a biblical perspective:

  • The first line of evidence is the observation that humans continue to evolve today. Supporters argue that microevolutionary changes—minor adaptations and variations within species—imply that evolutionary leaps, or macroevolution, happened historically. However, from a biblical perspective, these small changes reflect adaptability within God’s dynamic creation rather than proof of an evolutionary chain.
  • The second line of evidence lies in the physical and genetic similarities between humans and great apes. While the theory of evolution holds that these similarities are evidence of common descent, a biblical view suggests they reflect a common design where God used similar blueprints across different forms of life.
  • The third line of evidence comes from the hominin (humanlike) fossil record. While often cited as tangible proof of human evolution, the fossils can also be viewed through a creation model. A biblical perspective suggests hominin diversity may represent God’s deliberate introduction of various life-forms at different times.

When Did Adam and Eve Live?

The question of when Adam and Eve lived remains a topic of interest and debate, particularly because the Bible doesn’t provide a specific timeline on when creation occurred. However, science gives us several tools to estimate their time period by exploring genetics and archaeology through an old-earth creationist perspective.

One of those tools comes from genetics, where the concepts of mitochondrial Eve and Y-chromosomal Adam serve as anchors in time for dating our earliest ancestors.

According to some population genetics studies, these genetic lineages suggest that mitochondrial Eve and Y-chromosomal Adam lived approximately 130,000 to 140,000 years ago.

Second, the fossil record builds on this idea. Around 130,000 years ago, we see the unique globular human skull, a hallmark of modern humans, emerging. This key developmental feature appears suddenly in fossil evidence.

Third, archaeology reveals the presence of distinctly human behavior, that is, symbolic thought and expression, appearing more than 100,000 years ago. These behaviors mark a sudden and significant leap in cognitive and cultural development that further aligns with the genetic timeline.

The coinciding of these dates is both impressive and thought-provoking as it paints a potential picture of human origins that aligns with both the biblical account of Adam and Eve and scientific evidence.

Where Did Adam and Eve Live?

According to the Bible, Adam was made even before the beauty of Eden took form. Once the garden was established, God placed Adam there to tend and nurture it (Genesis 2:15), and then Eve was created and also lived there.

The Garden of Eden is described as a specific location on Earth, and not the entirety of the planet. This view differs with some interpretations by young-earth creationists who see Eden as covering the whole Earth. The garden’s precise location remains a mystery: its exact boundaries have been lost to time.

Nevertheless, the biblical text and modern science can help us make estimates. The Garden of Eden was most likely located around the modern Persian Gulf. Genesis 2 specifically mentions the Tigris, Euphrates, Pishon, and Gihon rivers.

Only the first two of these four rivers still flow, but, prior to the last ice age, all four waterways flowed into the Persian Gulf. As such, we estimate that the Garden of Eden was located somewhere within this region. It should be noted that the Garden of Eden may well have extended into parts of east Africa. The text describes the Gihon River as winding through the land of Cush, which corresponds to modern day Ethiopia.

What Language Did Adam and Eve Speak?

Some suggest Adam and Eve may have spoken Hebrew, as it is the language of the first five books of the Old Testament.

However, this idea lacks scientific backing. No concrete evidence supports the idea that Hebrew was the first human language. Indeed, humanity’s earliest form of communication remains a mystery.

Interestingly, one of the oldest known people groups, the Khoisan in Africa, use a unique method to communicate through clicking sounds. This ancient form of language offers a glimpse into the many ways humans have communicated across the ages.

In a playful nod to this thought, one might say that Adam and Eve “really clicked.”

What Did Adam and Eve Look Like?

The Bible is silent on the specific appearance of Adam and Eve, thereby leaving room for some interpretation and speculation. While they’re considered real, historical figures in the biblical narrative, Adam and Eve also serve as the theological everyman and everywoman that represent all of humanity.

This concept allows people from different heritages to envision the primordial pair in a way that reflects their own identities.

Science suggests that Adam and Eve:

  • were physically and behaviorally modern humans 
  • likely had heavily pigmented, dark skin
  • likely had brown eyes
  • likely had broad, flat noses
  • likely had black or brown, tightly curled hair

Adam and Eve History, Family Tree

While the story of Adam and Eve is often referred to as just that—“a story”—there’s reasonable evidence to affirm the pair as historical figures with a documented family tree. According to the Bible, they were created on the sixth day of creation as the culmination of God’s work. They represented God’s crowning achievement of creatures made in his image. We find further description of this work beautifully captured in Psalm 8:4–6.

The Bible (Genesis 4:1, 25) introduces us to their children—Cain, Abel, and Seth—and Genesis 5:4 reveals that Adam and Eve had many more sons and daughters, suggesting a larger family tree.

There’s even a possibility they may have had children before the Fall. This is speculative and inferred from Eve’s childbirth experiences. After the Fall, God told Eve her childbirth pain would increase, perhaps implying she had a beforehand understanding of childbirth.

Regarding the end of their lives, Adam lived for 930 years, with his long life eventually ending due to the time constraints brought on by the fall. The Bible doesn’t specify how long Eve lived.

The Second Adam: Jesus Christ

Obviously, the tragedy of the Adam and Eve story is that they rebelled against their Creator and plunged themselves and their posterity into a state of sin. But the story doesn’t end there.

In Christian theology, Jesus is seen as the “second Adam.” This idea comes from the apostle Paul in Romans 5:12–21 and 1 Corinthians 15.

Through Adam, sin and death entered the world and spread to all people. But through Jesus Christ came hope, redemption, and the gift of eternal life. His life, death, and resurrection offer a path to a restored relationship with God by counteracting the fall and providing a new beginning for humans who believe in his promise to save.

1 Corinthians 15 shines the light on Jesus’s resurrection, which not only affirms his divinity but highlights the hope of salvation. Jesus’s conquest over death nullified the consequences of sin introduced by the first Adam.

This theological reality highlights the transformation—from lost to redeemed—available to all persons who call on the name of the second Adam. It’s God’s great promise of salvation. Jesus as the second Adam is not just a theological idea but a beacon of hope, signifying the ultimate triumph of life over death and the enduring assurance of a restored creation.

Perhaps you’ve heard that science and the Christian faith are at odds. This rumored conflict between evolution vs. faith is often posed in the form of this question, “Can Christians believe in evolution?”

The very first verse in Genesis 1 tells us: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

This opening to God’s Word declares that there certainly was a beginning and, therefore, a Cause (or Beginner) to the universe. Christians believe that God created everything and that God’s hand can be seen throughout all the amazing architecture in our natural world—from the smallest cell to the vastest galaxies and beyond.

But how did God create the heavens and the earth?

People have asked this question for thousands of years and have come up with many different ideas, including the theory of evolution.

Before we get into this topic, it’s important to remember that each person’s belief regarding evolution is a secondary issue in theology. Thankfully, no matter what your viewpoint is on evolution, it does not dictate if you are (or can be) saved by Jesus Christ. Yes, it’s an important and relevant topic, but it doesn’t impact our salvation.

Can Christians Believe in Evolution?

Christians can believe in a number of scientific concepts that aren’t explicitly outlined in the Bible, such as cells, molecules, photosynthesis, gravity, etc.

However, some scientific concepts—like evolution—can both align with and challenge the Christian worldview in different ways. When it comes to evolution, the question becomes: Which worldview best lines up with the evidence in nature and the truth of the Bible? Both will give us clues.

Christians hold different views when trying to understand how God created.

The three most common views are:

  • Young-earth creationism (YEC)
  • Theistic evolution / evolutionary creation (TE)
  • Old-earth creationism (OEC)

Each view engages the topic of evolution differently, but all three accept at least portions of evolutionary theory. Reasons to Believe holds an old-earth creationism position and believes it offers the best explanation for what we see in the record of nature and the words of Scripture. RTB also remains skeptical of the extent to which the evolutionary paradigm explains the history of life.

But . . . What Exactly Is Evolution?

The concept of evolution emerged in the mid-19th century to help explain our ever-changing natural world. When it comes to the origin of the universe and life on Earth, evolution remains the predominant idea being taught in schools.

According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the definition of evolution is “any change in the frequency of [gene variants] within a population from one generation to the next.” This means that any change in a living organism’s genetics from one generation to the next is within the realm of “evolution” (i.e., plants, animal breeds, eye color, etc.).

More simply put, evolution = changes over time.

The concept of evolution predates Charles Darwin. However, Darwin progressed and popularized the term “evolution” and the theory in connection to natural selection in the 1800s through his writings On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871).

Darwin’s ideas led to something called the evolutionary paradigm, which many scientists use in an attempt to explain any biological change or even the emergence of life in the universe. The problem is, this paradigm is a mixture of proven concepts and unproven theories.

Let’s unpack it so you can clearly see which parts are well-supported by science and which ones are not.

Breaking Down the Evolutionary Paradigm

Within the evolutionary paradigm, there are five categories:

  1. Microevolution: the idea that gene frequencies can change in a population (like peppered moths changing wing color in response to environmental pollution)
  2. Speciation: the idea that one species gives rise to a closely related sister species (like the Galapagos finches changing into types of species via reproduction)
  3. Microbial evolution: the idea that microorganisms can evolve (like bacteria acquiring resistance to antibiotics)
  4. Chemical evolution/“origin of life”: the idea that molecules can self-organize into the very first cells via repetitive production (like simple chemicals assembling into complex molecular systems on early Earth)
  5. Macroevolution: the idea that one major group can give rise to another group (like an ape-like creature giving rise to humans)

The first three categories are well-evidenced and noncontroversial. We see them working in our everyday lives when we go to the zoo or are given a flu vaccine at the doctor’s office. Many of us even take delight in microevolution when considering which dog or cat to choose as our beloved family pet!

But the last two, chemical evolution and macroevolution, are proposed concepts and lack full scientific rigor and support. This is why RTB remains skeptical of the full evolutionary paradigm.

Chemical evolution tries to explain how life on Earth began using only natural processes. The main idea behind it is that the basic building blocks of life—the “essential stuff” that’s loaded with detailed information (like DNA, proteins, and cells)—supposedly came together through natural processes, without any outside help. Scientists working in this field are hoping to find a way to explain how this could happen all on its own, to avoid the need for a miracle.

However, current evidence doesn’t support the idea of chemical evolution. Even with experiments in labs trying to recreate the conditions of early Earth, scientists can’t produce life without stepping in and guiding the process. This shows that natural processes alone might not be enough to explain how life started

In What Darwin Didn’t Know, biochemist Dr. Fazale “Fuz” Rana explains:

While early, sudden, and complex life makes little sense from an evolutionary perspective, a creation explanation seems reasonable. If God introduced first life on Earth, it would appear instantaneously and abundantly in a complex form.

When we look at the origin of life, it seems that a divine hand is more likely than chemical evolution.

Macroevolution similarly falls short. There’s not enough data to support this idea. For example, macroevolution fails to explain:

  • the sudden emergence of complex cells (the Eukaryotic big bang)
  • the rapid diversification of multicellular organisms (the Cambrian explosion)
  • the rapid diversification and expansion of numerous new species including fish, birds, and mammals (radiation events in vertebrate history)
  • the sudden emergence of art, language, and technology (origin of social consciousness)
  • And much more

Many supporters of macroevolution suggest that humans evolved from ape-like creatures through a line that may have included Neanderthals or Denisovans. In this model, scientists attempt to explain the origin of humans without the need for a Creator. But there’s not enough evidence to support human evolution, either.

So, to respond to the question “Do Christians Believe in Evolution?,” the simple answer is yes and no.

  • Evolution, at best, can offer explanatory power for the development of much of the life we see on Earth. 
  • Evolution, at worst, attempts to explain away a Creator who seems not only probable but necessary!

Evolution and the Bible

A similar question to the one above is: Can Christianity and evolution coexist? Earlier, we presented three common Christian views on the creation of the universe: young-earth creationism (YEC), theistic evolution (TE), and old-earth creationism (OEC).

Can a Christian hold any of these positions and embrace at least a form of evolution?

Young-earth creationism

Generally speaking, YEC rejects much of modern science concerning the antiquity (ancient nature) of the universe, Earth, and life’s history in order to fit a six 24-hour day reading of the Genesis 1 creation events. YEC would not be compatible with chemical evolution or macroevolution.

Without diverting from the primary purposes of this article, there are many robust biblical and theological reasons to question if YEC is the most accurate reading of Genesis 1–11 as well. We suggest exploring the days of creation or looking at how old the earth is according to the Bible.

Theistic evolution

Theistic evolution (also referred to as evolutionary creationism) accepts the scientific evidence for the antiquity of the universe, Earth, and life’s history and views the fossil record as a reflection of life’s history. But just as the name suggests, this view accepts evolution (including macroevolution), arguing that God created through evolutionary processes. Theistic evolutionists see no conflict between the evolutionary paradigm and Christianity because they believe the biblical creation account is symbolic or allegorical.

Theistic evolution also sees the Bible and nature as separate domains. Though adherents consider both to be valuable, they believe these realms should not necessarily be integrated.

Old-earth creationism

OEC accepts the antiquity of the universe, Earth, and life’s history, viewing the fossil record as a proxy (a representative tool for dating) for a real history of life on Earth. OEC expresses skepticism about the claim that all of biology can be explained as the outworking of evolutionary processes (think back to our conversation about chemical evolution and macroevolution). In other words, OEC would not be compatible with chemical or macroevolution.

Alternatively, this perspective argues that key transitions in life’s history require the Creator’s intervention. Features of biological systems seem to reflect intelligent design and the hand of an all-powerful Creator. OEC sees the Bible and nature as harmonious forms of revelation from God to humanity. When accurately interpreted, both sources point to the same truths since those truths originate from he who is truth.

Biblically speaking, the primary contention between TE and OEC is in regards to the mode of divine action. Does God intervene occasionally when he creates or does he create through natural processes alone?

Fazale Rana shares part of his testimony, why he believes OEC offers the best explanation for life, and why he does not subscribe to the TE position:

What Does the Bible Say About Evolution?

In Genesis 1, we read of key moments in the creation events. Eight times the text expresses that God spoke and then creation responded. Those phenomena include the appearance of light, separation of waters, land and sea, vegetation on the land, separation of day and night, creatures of the sea and air, creatures of the land, and, finally, man and woman.

It’s helpful to understand the verbiage of the original text of Genesis 1. The Hebrew verb bārā’ means “created” and is used three times in the chapter. In its basic form, it refers to only one subject—God—and refers to a type of creation that only God could do. It’s called creation ex nihilo or creation out of nothing. In chapter 1, this term is used when God creates the heavens and the earth, the sea creatures and the birds, and humans (Adam and Eve). In other places in the text, other verb forms are used for the act of creation such as: ‘āśâ (make, fashion, create, execute, manufacture); hāyâ (be, happen, come about); dāshā’ (sprout, bring forth, produce, or spring forth); and others. This means that there are at least three acts of special creation. One involves God creating from nothing (bārā’). A second points to other acts of creation where God’s hand guides the continued development of the earth according to the laws of nature that he had established (dāshā’). And in a third, ‘āśâ, God is directly and personally involved in his creative acts.

We can see this principle (of God’s intervention) demonstrated by findings in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, and astronomy. A special hand of intervention from a Designer was needed to get the necessary elements for life (such as hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen). From there, other basic chemical structures would appear.

As revealed in geology, paleoanthropology, and biology, creation’s response to God’s divine action resulted in the proliferation and complexity of life. Otherwise, it would be impossible to get the diversity of creatures we see today in a short (from an evolutionary perspective) time.

Creation and evolution (God’s hand guiding continued development) together are fulfilling God’s plan. Evidence reveals the literal “spark” of creative action from God and the guided outflow of natural processes that continue his work. The result is an exquisitely designed, flourishing universe.

Also, Genesis speaks of the personal nature of God’s creation of humanity. The creation of humans is the only time that God creates “in his own image” (1:27) and with his “breath” (2:7). God then gives humans a commission (1:28). This account presents a significant challenge to the evolutionary paradigm since it implies that humans were a special creation, not a continuation of other evolved forms. How Should I Talk About Evolution with My Friends and Family?

Evolution is a complex subject with a long history and a variety of definitions.

Great conversations start with curious questions. Start by figuring out what your family or friends think “evolution” means and what categories they’re aware of. (For example, some people have no idea that microevolution and macroevolution are two very different concepts.)

Always define your terms—it helps everyone stay on the same page. And recognize that, as truth seekers, we want to follow the evidence.

If you express skepticism toward evolution, you can introduce a discussion based on wanting the “best evidence.” That approach will go much further than a hard statement or closed-minded attitude. If we believe “all truth is God’s truth,” we can be confident in this approach.

And remember, your friends and family may believe the rumor that the conversation is about evolution vs. faith. But you can help uncover the hand of God and separate fact from fiction.

The Genesis account of the flood of Noah often recalls storybook illustrations of a cute little ark overflowing with smiling animals (always with a pair of giraffes sticking their necks above the roof), sagely Noah with his faithful dove, and a vivid rainbow overhead. The reality is much less fanciful. Genesis 6–9 tells of humanity’s extreme wickedness and God’s perfect justice—and foreshadows the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ.

There are many different interpretations of the Genesis flood account. Some anthropologists and historians view the flood of Noah as one of many flood myths from the ancient Near East—legends that may have been inspired by a real natural disaster or developed as part of ancient religious storytelling and ritual practice. Some Bible scholars interpret the flood as more of an allegory—filled with important theological themes of judgment, redemption, and covenant—but not necessarily history.

Many Christians, however, believe the flood was a real event and Noah a historical figure. And among this group there is debate about the extent of the flood—whether it was global (covering the whole planet) or local (covering a large but limited region).  

This article will provide an overview of flood views and Reasons to Believe’s (RTB’s) position (known as the universal view), with emphasis on scientific support. 

Let’s start with a review of this iconic Bible story.

Noah’s Ark in the Bible: The Genesis Flood Account

To say the people of Noah’s time were corrupt and violent is an understatement. The Hebrew words used to describe them paint a picture of absolute and total moral depravity. The taint of evil had infected the people’s animals, possessions, and even the land they occupied. As a result, God declared he would send a flood to wipe out humanity and cleanse the land.

In the Genesis story of Noah’s ark, Noah is introduced as a righteous man who walked faithfully with God. God warned Noah of the coming judgment and told him to build an ark to save himself, his family, and pairs of animal species (one pair of unclean animals and seven pairs of clean animals and birds). Noah, along with his wife, their three sons, and their three daughters-in-law, built the ark according to God’s instructions and stocked it with provisions.

Yet even as Noah built the ark in obedience to God, the people around him ignored his example of righteousness and refused to honor God—further evidence of the depravity of his time. In contrast, Genesis 7:8–9 states the animals came to Noah just as God commanded, ready to be taken aboard.

How Did God Flood the Earth?

Genesis describes rain and underground springs contributing to the deluging water:

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

Scientific research also suggests that melting ice and a surge of water in the Indian Ocean could have contributed to the floodwaters. More on this later.

How Long Did the Flood Last?

From the first day of rain to disembarkation, the flood of Noah lasted a little over one year. Genesis describes the event occurring in stages.

  • In Noah’s 600th year, the flood began with rain for 40 days and nights (Genesis 7:11–12).
  • The waters rose, covering mountains and killing all life outside the ark (Genesis 7:18–23).
  • After 150 days, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat as the waters receded (Genesis 8:1–4).
  • Seven and a half months later, Noah could see the tops of mountains (Genesis 8:5).
  • After 40 more days, Noah released a raven and a dove to check for dry land. Eventually the dove returned with a fresh olive leaf and then later did not return at all (Genesis 8:6–12).
  • About 375 days after the flood started, Noah saw that the ground was dry (Genesis 8:13).
  • God instructed Noah to leave the ark with his family and the animals (Genesis 8:14–19).

After disembarking, Noah offered sacrifices to God. God blessed Noah and his family and commanded them to be fruitful and fill the earth, just as he had commanded Adam and Eve to do (Genesis 1:26–31). God also established a covenant with Noah and all living creatures, promising never again to destroy the earth with a flood. The rainbow is the symbol of this promise.

So, what purpose did the flood of Noah serve?

Why Did God Flood the Earth?

A common criticism of the flood story is that God’s wrathful judgment seems to contradict biblical claims that God is all-loving and all-merciful. Such critiques forget that God is also all-holy and all-just. Since God is loving and just in his nature, everything that God does is both loving and just—all of God’s attributes go together and cannot be separated from each other.

Sin violates justice and holiness—and God’s love necessitates violators be held accountable. Scripture emphasizes the seriousness and pervasiveness of sin. It infects human thoughts, actions, and words. And breaking just one of God’s commandments is like breaking them all (James 2:10). Without Jesus’s atoning sacrifice on the cross, no one could escape sin’s penalty.

All sins harm the perpetrator and others, but some sins cause deeper and more enduring harm. Moreover, sin’s effects can ripple outward—impacting families, communities, and even the creation entrusted to human care. Such was the case in Noah’s time. For that reason, the punishment God dealt Noah’s generation was just and purposeful.

If the flood’s purpose was to judge wicked people, then how big of a flood was necessary?

Was Noah’s Flood a Local or Global Flood?

As stated, many Christians believe the flood of Noah was a historical event, but they debate passionately over the extent of the flooding. This debate is relatively new in Christian history, beginning during the Enlightenment but greatly escalating to current levels over the last 100 years in the wake of Darwin’s evolutionary theory.

Global Flood Views

In this view, the flood of Noah covered the entire planet, even up to the highest peaks. This interpretation usually goes hand-in-hand with young-earth creationism and places the time of the flood just a few thousand years ago (no more than 10,000) based on calculations drawn from the Genesis genealogies. Proponents often cite a global flood as the cause of most geological features (e.g., sedimentary layers, canyons, mountains, fossil deposits, etc.). Some also propose that the animals on the ark were representatives of their kind (e.g., cat kind, dog kind, etc.) and later diversified into the many species seen around Earth today.

The Local Flood Views

Also called the regional view, this interpretation suggests that the Genesis flood covered the entire Persian Gulf and the surrounding regions, including Mesopotamia, southern Arabia, coastal Iran, and possibly the lowlands of Egypt, Turkey, and the Levant (the area along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea—where Asia, Africa, and Europe meet). The event was huge and devastating, but certainly not global.

Proponents argue that the ancients did not view the world in global terms. So, it’s likely that when Genesis says the flood was “worldwide,” it’s referring to the region known to the original audience—that region would have been their whole world. This interpretation is consistent with other biblical passages (such as Genesis 41:56–42:2, 1 Kings 4:34, Acts 2:5, and Romans 1:8) where mentions of “the whole world” clearly do not mean the entire planet.

Universal Flood View

RTB’s position on the Genesis flood is called the universal view. It’s a variation of the local view. In this interpretation, the flood was “universal” in that it wiped out all humanity and associated animals, save those on Noah’s ark, without covering the globe. Put another way, the flood account focuses on a historical and theologically significant instance of God’s judgment of humanity. The geographic scope is not the central concern of the text.

Christians who hold differing views have written extensively on the biblical details of the flood accounts and how they should be interpreted. But here we will look at what science contributes to this hot topic.

The Flood Explained Through Science

Great care should be exercised when examining claims of scientific evidence for the flood of Noah.

Many dubious reports have circulated over the years. For example, a “boat-shaped” geological formation in Durupınar, Turkey, has been promoted as the remains and resting place of Noah’s ark. This and similar claims (such as finding wood or animal remains from the ark) have been met with strong skepticism and criticism from scientists and theologians.

What Scientific Evidence of Noah’s Flood Exists Today?

Excavations and research in the flood region have not yielded ironclad proof of flood deposits that match the Genesis account. Though the flood of Noah was a massive natural disaster, it was short-lived. RTB founder Hugh Ross points out, “Even a major flood of such a brief duration will not leave a deposit enduring and substantial enough to be indisputably identified by geologists many thousands of years later.”

Twentieth-century examples of major floods in the Mississippi and Missouri Valleys demonstrated this point. All geological and geographical evidence of these events was erased within decades.

There’s no scientific silver-bullet proof of Noah’s flood. Nevertheless, scientific fields like geology, geography, and climatology, as well as archaeology and anthropology, provide important insight into where and when a universal-but-not-global flood could have reasonably occurred.

Where Did the Flood of Noah Take Place?

Based on geographic descriptions in Genesis, Noah’s ark was likely floating in a region of the Persian Gulf or Mesopotamian Plain. From this position, the surrounding highlands of Arabia and Persia, which are less than 500 meters in elevation, would have been too far away to see from the ark. It would appear to Noah and his family that the floodwaters covered everything from horizon to horizon.

Genesis suggests that humanity did not disperse around the globe until after the flood and the attempt to build the tower of Babel (Genesis 11). Research into early human migration fits with this biblical description. The best scientific data from archaeology, anthropology, and genetics puts humans in Europe, far-east Asia, and Australia at roughly the same time—implying an “aggressive, nearly simultaneous scattering” that matches the post-Babel dispersion described in Genesis.

When Was the Flood of Noah?

Hugh Ross asserts, “It is not possible to assign an accurate date for Noah’s flood. However, a reasonable estimate can be assigned to the event.” Global flood proponents usually argue that the flood could have happened roughly around 5000 BC. Some who take the local view estimate a range of 7,000–13,000 years ago. RTB suggests a local-but-universal flood could have been possible if it took place during the last ice age, roughly 50,000–40,000 years ago, when humanity had not yet migrated much beyond the warm, lowland areas of eastern Africa, the Near and Middle East, and possibly the Persian Gulf region.

During the last ice age, temperature fluctuations caused ice sheets to undergo freezing and melting cycles. In response to these cycles, human settlements would have expanded and contracted, leading people to retreat to warmer, low-lying regions when ice formed. Melting ice, combined with copious rain plus water from underground springs (which were plentiful in the Persian Gulf and surrounding regions), would have been a perfect source for widespread flooding. A possible surge of sea water from the Indian Ocean could have also contributed to the deluge.

Is There Scientific Evidence for a Global Flood?

Geology is especially helpful in evaluating the global and local views of Noah’s flood. Relevant data includes things like sedimentary layers, fossils (e.g., the order in which they’re found in the layers), tectonic plate movements, and erosion patterns.

A flood of global proportions would have left behind distinct geological markers, such as rapid deposition of all sedimentary layers (with little-to-no igneous mixing) and wide-spread mixing of fossils from different geological periods. And, as stated, the global flood view includes the claim that the Genesis flood catastrophe, rather than long-term gradual processes, was responsible for shaping Earth’s physical geography. But the data simply does not support a global flood.

  • Geological evidence shows clear signs of gradual deposition over millions of years, such as distinct layers with varying fossils, ripple marks, and mud cracks, which indicate periods of drying between layers.
  • The order of fossils in the geologic column (simpler organisms at the bottom, more complex organisms at the top) is largely consistent. Anomalies in the fossil record are better explained as localized phenomena in special circumstances, not because of a global flood.
  • The formation of coal, oil, and diamonds takes millions of years under specific heat and pressure conditions, which a flood cannot create.
  • Plate tectonics involves movements at rates of only a few centimeters per year. Tectonic uplift also best explains the presence of marine fossils on mountains.
  • Major erosional features, such as the Grand Canyon, display complex layering, with evidence of long periods of erosion and river activity. Though floods can carve large landscapes, these are localized events, not global.
  • Beyond all this, numerous dating techniques demonstrate that the geological data around the world formed over a wide variety of times spanning millions and billions of years.

Hugh sums it up: “The overwhelming consensus among geologists is that there is no evidence to support the occurrence of a global flood.”

Does Earth Have Enough Water to Cover the Planet?

Another major problem for the global view is the source of the floodwaters. Though the planet surface is 71% water, Earth has less than a quarter of the water needed to cover the entire planet, including Mount Everest. Overcoming this problem often requires global flood advocates to propose or accept implausible claims.

One such claim is that Earth’s crust was completely flat at the beginning of the flood and then experienced massive uplift during the flood to generate all the mountain ranges we know today. RTB scholar Jeff Zweerink and Scholar Community member Kirby Hansen observe that this uplift proposal is unrealistic:

The tectonic forces required to cause such massive mountain- and ocean-building events in a single year would have been so violent and caused such turbulence in the waters that the ark would likely have been torn apart or capsized.

Accepting a global flood would require implausible claims, such as water being hidden or that significant topographic changes are not detectable. It’s more prudent to view the flood as a universal judgment for humanity, but not global in extent.

What Is the Meaning Behind Noah’s Ark?

Hebrews 11 and 2 Peter 2 describe Noah as a prophet and preacher to his generation—and to all who read his story—who warned of sin’s consequences and called people to repent.

The ark served not only as a rescue vessel for Noah and his family but also as a means for Noah to fulfill his role as a prophet. The conspicuous act of the ark’s construction and Noah’s constant presence were part of God’s warning strategy, providing a visual and practical message to those around him.

What It Means for the Bible

A universal-but-not-global flood allows Christians to view Genesis 6–11 as historical accounts, rather than as purely mythical or allegorical. It also removes a common objection—the implausibility of a global flood—that skeptics raise about the Bible’s reliability.

But more than anything, Hugh notes, “The doctrine of God’s judgment is a much more crucial doctrine than the extent of the flood. We need to put the interpretation of the geography of the flood in the context of that more significant doctrine.”

What It Means for People Today

Far from a storybook fable, the flood of Noah is a sobering warning of the ultimate judgment to come. And yet the ark itself serves as a picture of hope and salvation. Yes, God will judge the sins of the world—but he has also graciously provided a path of redemption through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

If the flood foreshadows judgment, then the ark foreshadows victory over sin and death.

When it comes to the theory of evolution and understanding where plants, animals, and humans came from, some people picture a single-celled organism in Earth’s early ocean.

They imagine this cell changing form and function countless times over billions of years through microevolution and macroevolution. Eventually, it becomes an elephant roaming the plains of Africa or a towering redwood tree in the forests of California.

This is a bit jarring to think about. It implies humans—along with all other life-forms—came into existence without any special intervention by a Creator.

But is that what the scientific evidence tells us? Did all life on Earth come into being through a process of genetic mutation, with small changes leading to major transformations?

To answer these questions, you first need to understand the huge difference between microevolution vs. macroevolution. 

So, let’s take a closer look and examine the evidence together. As we unpack this hotly debated topic, we’ll also explain why such radically different views on life’s origins exist.

What Is Evolution?

Before we dive into the differences between microevolution vs. macroevolution, it’s important to define our terms and cover some basics first.

What do people mean when they use the word “evolution”?

Well—it depends.

Evolution has become a blanket term used in many different contexts. In its most general definition, evolution simply means changes over time. There’s nothing controversial about that. From cars and technology to art and fashion, you can easily see many things evolving throughout history.

But in the world of science, evolution specifically refers to how natural things (not man-made or human directed) may have physically changed over time. It also includes the theory that evolution can explain the origin of entirely new species—complete with their own unique genetic blueprint that never existed before.

This is what brings us to the two main categories by which evolution is discussed: microevolution vs. macroevolution.

Let’s unpack each one.

What Is Microevolution?

Microevolution definition: Small changes within a species or category.

Imagine walking into a garden filled with a hundred butterflies fluttering around. Some have hues of deep blue and black, while others have striking patterns in orange, white, red, purple, yellow, and everything in between.

You see some with sleek, streamlined wings shaped for speed and others with delicate, almost lace-like edges.

Then, you lean against a tree and notice something next to you moving slightly—it’s a gray-brown butterfly perfectly camouflage against the bark.

Each butterfly is like a tiny piece of art, illustrating the incredible diversity in color, shape, and size within their category of insects. 

Each of these butterflies is a different species. That’s why their wing colors and patterns are so different. But if you closely examine butterflies from the same species, like monarch butterflies, they display small variations, too.

The differences you see in the monarch butterflies are evidence of microevolution on display. These small changes—often referred to as genetic variations or mutations—occur by changing the DNA or by combining existing genes in new ways within a species.

These changes can happen in a short period of time, such as a span of days with bacteria, or many years, depending on the species. Often, these small changes are observable within a human lifetime

This is what makes microevolution an undisputed fact, unlike macroevolution.

Is There Evidence of Microevolution?

Yes, researchers have made many direct and often repeatable observations of microevolutionary changes under many conditions in the wild and in labs.

An example of this change can be seen in lab studies on bacteria. Since bacteria can multiply very rapidly, scientists can observe their DNA changing to become more resistant to antibiotics. These microscopic organisms are the ultimate survival experts, constantly adapting to new challenges.

In the lab, scientists expose bacteria to antibiotics and watch their response. Initially, antibiotics may kill most bacteria, but a few hardy survivors carry traits that make them resistant. These traits are passed on and over time the entire population can become resistant, making antibiotics less effective. That’s microevolution in action, right there in the petri dish!

Keep in mind, this direct and repeatable observational evidence for microevolution does not exist in macroevolution. We’ll get to that in a bit.

 How Does Microevolution Happen?

As a species goes through small changes—due to random mutations in their DNA, external changes in their environment, or natural selection—certain groups may eventually survive better than others.

For example, going back to our butterflies, if a certain wing pattern or color helps it blend in more easily with its surroundings, it’s less likely to be eaten by birds. So, the butterflies with helpful patterns or colors are more likely to survive and pass on their genes to the next generation.

What Is Macroevolution?

Macroevolution definition: Major changes over a long period of time that produce an entirely new species or category.

For the most part, when people talk about evolution in science, they’re typically referring to macroevolution—the change from one major group or category of living things into another over millions of years.

Macroevolution is the grand saga in the theory of evolution. It’s when an entirely new species pops up or many new species branch off from a common ancestor. It’s the assumption that, if microevolution is true and you give it enough time, those small changes will add up to major transformations.

Look familiar? You may recognize this from your high school biology class. It implies that you have a great-great-great-grand-apelike ancestor who, after millions of years, gave rise to a variety of species, including humans.

While this is a very popular illustration (which you’ve probably seen in one way or another), you need to know that there are several problems with the theory of macroevolution. Let’s examine the evidence together.

 Is There Evidence of Macroevolution?

Unlike microevolution, macroevolution is not observable or conclusive.

Since there’s no direct evidence of one major group becoming a different major group, evolutionary scientists are making a hypothesis—a proposed explanation. Below are a few of their claims and the problems with each.

The Fossil Record

Claim: The fossil record shows a sequence of changes in species over millions of years, such as small, furry land mammals evolving into modern-day whales.

Problem: There are significant gaps in the fossil record. Transitional fossils, which should show the gradual evolution of one species into another, are extremely rare. For example, fossils like Tiktaalik that are often cited as transitional forms, are exceptions rather than the rule.

What we see most often in the fossil record is the sudden appearance of fully formed species without clear transitional forms. This contradicts the smooth, continuous process over millions of years suggested by macroevolution.

Genetic Studies

Claim: Genetic studies show similarities in DNA between different species, suggesting they share common ancestors (aka common descent).

Problem #1: The similarities we see in anatomy and genetics, which are often presented as evidence for common ancestors, can also be interpreted as evidence of common design. This means we have a common Designer (our Creator: God) who used similar structures and genetic codes across different forms of life.

Problem #2: Macroevolution would require extensive genetic changes to lead to new structures, functions, and entirely new species. This type of complex genetic reorganization, occurring purely through natural processes, has never been seen. Additionally, when you look at laboratory creatures—where humans are trying to force macro changes in DNA—it’s always catastrophic, leading to the creation of organisms that are badly deformed.

Microevolution to Macroevolution

Claim: Millions of years of microevolution will eventually lead to macroevolution.

Problem: This claim is an overreach. Since scientists don’t fully understand how an organism’s genetic makeup (genotype) influences its biological traits (phenotype), no one can claim to know how much time is required for supposed macroevolutionary changes. It’s like trying to predict how long it would take to build a mansion without a clear blueprint or knowing how all the materials work together.

In other words, the lack of evidence for the theory of macroevolution is too significant to dismiss. Without enough proof to build the case, we can’t accept that one major group becomes another major group as a natural process. That would require a huge leap of faith.

What’s the Difference Between Microevolution and Macroevolution?

The biggest and most obvious difference between micro and macroevolution is that microevolution results in variations within kinds of creatures, while macroevolution supposedly produces new kinds of creatures.

Here’s a breakdown of the differences:

Does Microevolution Lead to Macroevolution?

The assumption that microevolution leads to macroevolution requires physical evidence to prove that it’s true and possible.

As we mentioned above, macroevolution—the idea that evolutionary changes result in entirely new species—is not based on direct observation or repeatable experiments that demonstrate its validity.

Instead, it’s more like trying to complete a puzzle with only a few pieces. Imagine having a small section of a puzzle—just enough to form a partial picture. From those few pieces, you might guess what the full image is, but without all the pieces, you can’t be sure if your guess is accurate.

In the case of microevolution, scientists have the puzzle pieces and can clearly see how they fit together.

But with macroevolution, many critical pieces are missing. Despite this fact, some proponents of macroevolution take these few scattered pieces and try to force them into a narrative that excludes God, suggesting that life evolved without a Creator.

While the gaps in evidence may lead some to speculate how different species arose, we, as old-earth creationists, see a perfect alignment with Scripture. The sudden appearance of fully formed species without clear transitional forms is evidence of a masterful Designer creating.

God and Evolution: What Does the Bible Say?

It’s no surprise, but there’s a case to support microevolution vs. macroevolution in the Bible.

We find consistency with microevolution in the Scriptures when it mentions variations within “kinds” in Genesis 1:11–24, as well as the account of Jacob doing selective breeding to improve the number of his flock (Genesis 30:25–43).

Jacob basically created a “lab” field for the microevolution of his flock. The Bible is explicit on this as it describes microevolution!

However, macroevolution doesn’t appear in the Bible. There are no implications that the largest kinds of creatures evolved continuously into or from other large kinds of creatures.

What Scripture does state clearly is that God directly and supernaturally made each category of creature “after its own kind” (Genesis 1:11–24).

The Bible never describes a fish becoming an elephant, and monkeys certainly didn’t macroevolutionize to humans.

This is key because we ask these questions to ultimately answer our life’s origin.

And the natural reading of the Genesis account is that man is created de novo (anew, afresh, or fully formed). Genesis 2:7 implies God created us from inanimate matter (lifeless dust) rather than from an earlier animate creature (like the great apes).

There would be no need for a divine Creator to cause man’s existence if macroevolution is simply a natural and chance process of random mutation and natural selection, which ultimately would deny human exceptionalism.

At the end of the day, holding to macroevolution leaves no room for God.

Belonging to Him

There’s no doubt that creation reveals God’s love for us. And as we study microevolution, we see the intricacies that allow adaptations within kinds—without compromising the uniqueness of each creature’s category.

This view puts God in his rightful place as the infinitely creative mind behind our entire universe.

He has shown us his existence, character, and eternal power through creation, and it compels us to be in awe of his love for details, design, and beauty.

Ultimately, we’re accountable to him as we’re made uniquely in his image, set apart from all other creatures.

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably asked, Did humans evolve from monkeys? more than once in your lifetime.

For many of us, it starts in our first biology class, learning about the theory of human evolution or seeing a picture like this:

Before your imagination goes too far, we need to pause and clearly address two important questions:

1. Did humans evolve from monkeys?

No, humans did not evolve from monkeys, chimpanzees, or any other ape-like creature—past or present.

Humans are the crown of creation. distinct and unique from the animal kingdom in major ways, originating from Adam and Eve. We’ll unpack this along with the science that supports it later on in this post.

2. Do evolutionary biologists believe humans evolved from monkeys?

No, evolutionary biologists do not claim humans evolved directly from monkeys, chimpanzees, or any other modern apes we see today.

If this is confusing to you, it’s probably because popular media has oversimplified what evolutionists believe.

Throughout this post, we’ll answer common questions about “monkey to human” evolution and help you better understand both the evolutionary and creationist positions so you can have meaningful conversations about human origins.

What Do Evolutionary Biologists Actually Believe about Human Evolution?

Evolutionary biologists claim that humans are part of an evolutionary lineage that includes monkeys. Meaning, monkeys did not eventually become humans, but human beings are a part of a family tree that includes monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans.

It’s known as common ancestry, or common descent, within the macroevolutionary model.

Remember high school biology? It’s the branching tree with humans and monkeys as separate branches stemming from a common trunk.

It’s the theory that human evolution could be traced back to an ancestor that’s neither fully human nor fully monkey but rather an ancient primate from around 25 to 30 million years ago.

And, over time, this ancestral population split into completely different lineages, giving rise to the diverse array of primates we see today, including monkeys, great apes, and humans.

This ancestor’s exact identity is unknown and still debated by evolutionary biologists today. We’ll get into this mystery “ancestor” a little later.

If humans evolved from apes, why do apes still exist?

Now that you understand what evolutionary biologists actually claim, the answer to this question should be easier: Shared ancestry does not claim a linear evolution from apes to humans. So, apes would still be around as a branch from a common ancestor along with human beings.

That means, the question you’re actually trying to answer is: Do we indeed share common ancestry with monkeys and other ape-like creatures?

The simple answer, from both a scientific and biblical perspective is, no.

What we find in science, as well as in the Bible, continues to point to God as the divine Creator who made us distinct, unique, and apart from any other creatures.

In other words, a closer look at the scientific data shows that we DID NOT DESCEND from an unknown ape-like creature. Instead, we were uniquely and specially created as our own species—as human beings, as image bearers of God.

Common Design Comes Before Common Descent

Before we dive a little deeper into the science, let us first introduce you to Sir Richard Owen, one of Britain’s foremost naturalists (student of natural history).

Back in 1849, even before Charles Darwin proposed his theory of evolution, Owen proposed that shared anatomical features among organisms could be understood through the idea of an archetype, an original pattern or model. He saw these shared features as displays of a common blueprint, rather than evidence of common descent. It’s the idea that instead of us sharing a common ancestor that traces humans down to an ape-like creature millions of years ago, these forms can be looked at as evidence of common design.

Unfortunately, Owen’s work has been overshadowed by Darwin’s theory of evolution, but it’s essential for understanding how common design is consistent with science and Scripture.

This framework gives us a great explanation for why we see similarities between humans and other primates in some of the scientific findings today. The Designer who made you and me could have used the same form or design for other animals. Owen’s work makes perfect sense in understanding how a Creator would create humans and animals by using similar designs to make uniquely different creatures!

The Fossil Record & Lucy (Our Human Ancestor?)

Does the fossil record reveal a mysterious common “ancestor”? 

Lucy. Does that name ring a bell? 

The story of Lucy, the famous Australopithecus afarensis (try saying that three times fast), has long been ingrained in our understanding of human evolution. With her discovery decades ago, Lucy became the figure in the evolutionary tree of human ancestry, portrayed in textbooks and sketches as a significant link in our origin story.

But recent discoveries have shaken up this story, bringing a lot of questions about Lucy’s place in Darwin’s tree as a common ancestor. New evidence suggests that the hominid group Australopithecus afarensis (A. afarensis), to which Lucy belongs, may be considered a dead end or a completely different branch in the human evolutionary tree.

This revelation comes from the analysis of a jawbone belonging to A. afarensis, discovered in 2002. Scientists found that the jawbone closely resembles that of a gorilla rather than a human, indicating a separate branch from the human lineage. This is big. The find continues to challenge the idea of an evolutionary connection between Lucy and human beings and of the validity of the evolutionary model.

For evolution to be accepted as fact, there must be a clear evolutionary pathway supported by in-between forms in the fossil record.

However, as science progresses, these proposed transitional forms (like Lucy) seem to vanish, leaving gaps in the evolutionary story of human origins.

What can these gaps mean?

Well, they can really only mean one thing.

God created human beings uniquely in his image, apart and distinct from any other animals.

In staying committed and faithful to what we find in science as well as in Scripture, the gaps can only mean that creatures like Lucy belong in the animal realm, distinct and separate from human beings who bear the image of their Creator.

Small but Mighty Evidence of DNA in Human Origins

But how do we explain how similar we are to chimps? Aren’t we closely related to them at the genetic level?

Yes!

You may have heard that humans and chimps share 95–99% of their DNA, which many people say provides evidence for our evolutionary connection. This is probably the biggest known argument for common ancestry (hence the traction of Darwin’s theory).

But recent studies have thrown a monkey wrench into that idea (pun intended). It seems that humans and chimps are more genetically distinct than we think, and these differences add to the case for common design when thinking about human origins.

There’s a ton of evidence pointing to this distinction. For example, one of the latest findings in genetics revolves around something called alternate gene splicing.

Let’s break it down:

DNA is like a blueprint that contains instructions for building and regulating all the proteins in our bodies. These proteins are the real MVPs of life, carrying out all sorts of essential tasks in our cells.

When it’s time to make a protein, the cell starts by copying the instructions from a gene into a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA). But here’s where things get interesting. Before the mRNA can be used to make a protein, it undergoes a process called splicing. This is where the cell snips out the noncoding bits of the mRNA (called introns) and stitches together the important parts (called exons) to form the final mRNA.

And here’s where we humans and chimps really differ.

Researchers have found that humans and chimps have significant differences in how their mRNA gets spliced. While most of the splicing reactions are pretty similar between the two species, some genes show very distinct splicing patterns in humans compared to chimps. And these differences seem to affect genes involved in all sorts of functions, from brain activity to heart health.

In short, while we might share a lot of DNA with chimps, once we get down to the intricacies of how DNA functions, there are significant differences that make us who we are, different from ape-like creatures.

How Are Humans Unique?

We possess many unique characteristics that set us apart from chimps.

For example . . .

  • Complex Language and Communication: We have a sophisticated system of language that allows for complex communication, including the ability to convey abstract ideas, share knowledge, and express emotions through spoken and written words.
  • Advanced Cognitive Abilities: We exhibit higher cognitive functions such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-awareness. This includes the ability to plan for the future, reflect on the past, and imagine possibilities beyond immediate reality.
  • Culture and Civilization: We create and maintain complex social structures, traditions, and belief systems that form the basis of human culture and civilization. This includes art (this is a big one!), music, literature, religion, and technological innovation.
  • Tool Use and Technology: We’re adept at creating and using tools to manipulate the environment. This includes not only simple tools made from natural materials but also advanced technologies that have shaped the course of human history (you can Google that!).
  • Bipedalism: We’re the only fully bipedal primates—the only ones that walk on two legs.
  • Complex Social Structures: We form intricate social networks and relationships, ranging from small family units to large-scale societies. This includes cooperation, consideration of others, and social hierarchies.
  • Symbolic Thinking and Creativity: We have the ability to think symbolically and imaginatively, allowing for creativity, artistic expression, and abstract thought. This includes the development of language, art, music, and literature.
  • Self-Awareness and Consciousness: We possess a sense of self-awareness and consciousness, allowing us to reflect on our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, as well as to consider the perspectives of others.

Pretty different, right?

These unique characteristics collectively distinguish us from other animals. And it’s what birthed civilization and culture—from the history of time to the moment we’re living in today.

While individual traits may be present in other species to varying degrees, the combination and extent of these traits are incomparable and unique to humans.

From the Very Beginning . . .

Now that we got the science down, let’s see if the Bible can back it up.

There are many Scripture verses we can find that talk about how God set apart humans to be special and unique (that’s a whole other topic called human exceptionalism), but for the sake of this article, we’ll mention one that supports the creation model (common design) we hold to.

In the Bible, Genesis 2:7 describes how God created Adam. It says God made Adam from the dust of the ground. What stands out here is the word “formed.”

In this verse, the word “formed” comes from a Hebrew word “yasar,” which means to shape or make. And in Genesis 2:19, thesame word is used to say how God made all the animals from the ground, too. So, from these verses, we can gather that both humans and animals were made by God from the same stuff. Which makes sense—the fossil record seems to reveal shared DNA similarities as well as shared features.

However, here’s where human uniqueness comes in.

Even though humans and animals were made from the same material, only Adam got the special treatment of having the breath of life breathed into him by God.

We read in Genesis 1:26–27 and 9:6, that only humans were made in the image of God. We have special and unique qualities that reflect God’s image.

So, it seems like the Bible indeed supports and helps explain what we find in science.

It makes sense that there would be some similarities between us and chimps because we were made of the same material, carefully crafted by a Designer. But the gaps we see in the fossil record, as well as the significant differences in the intricacies of our genes explain how we are indeed specially and uniquely made—because the Spirit of God has been breathed into us.

But Can Christians Believe in Human Evolution?

Although the case for common design is what we hold to as the best explanation of what we find in science and Scripture, there are other Christians who believe God could have created human beings through the evolutionary process.

That’s a topic for an in-depth discussion for another time, but the important thing to know is that evolutionary theory has significant scientific challenges.

Let us continue to seek and study both science and the Bible.

Understanding a little more about human origins, and how God has specially created us apart from any other living creature in the world should be an encouragement to us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, beloved by our Creator.
