Question of the Week: The Bible says in Genesis 4 that Cain was a farmer and Abel a shepherd. History books and the Internet teach that the first humans were hunter-gatherers and nomadic. Do you have a book or a blog that reconciles these statements?

My Answer: I have two books and three blogs. Genesis 2 states that God created Adam near Eden and Eve in Eden where four known rivers come together. Today, that location is more than 200 feet below sea level, but during the last ice age, it was above sea level. During the last ice age, the climate was highly unstable and the atmospheric carbon dioxide level was about a hundred parts per million lower than it was before the beginning of the industrial revolution. Such a low carbon dioxide level seriously limited photosynthetic productivity. These conditions made cultivation and animal husbandry extremely difficult but not impossible, provided they were done intermittently on small scales.      

The small scales and intermittent nature of such agriculture explain why archeologists have not found any evidence for such activity until just the past several years. Papers have been published showing that humans living 14,400, 23,000, and 32,600 years ago were harvesting grains, roasting and grinding the grains, and turning the subsequent flour into bakery products. While owing to climate instability and low atmospheric carbon dioxide, hunter-gathering may have been the predominant means for humans to obtain food during the last ice age, evidently there were episodes when humans engaged in sophisticated agriculture. Genesis 4:2–4 states that the first humans were cultivating crops and keeping flocks of animals. Until recently, anthropologists insisted that early humans were subsistence hunter-gatherers. Anthropologists asserted that the diet of the first anatomically modern humans1 consisted predominantly of meat from large game animals supplemented by fruit, leafy greens, and roots gathered from wild plants.

This assessment began to change in 2015, when anthropologists discovered that ancient humans were engaged in preparing and baking bread.2 I have written two articles documenting and describing discoveries of how humans living 14,400, 23,000, and 32,600 years ago were harvesting grains, roasting and grinding the grains, and baking the flour over hearths they manufactured to produce a variety of breads.3 In those articles, I explained the reason why these discoveries were so late in coming. Previous to 12,000 years ago, the global climate was so unstable and the atmospheric carbon dioxide so low that any agricultural activity, by necessity, had to be small-scale and mixed (unspecialized), which made any potential discovery of ancient agricultural sophistication extremely difficult.

Additional Food Preparation Discoveries
A team of seven paleoanthropologists led by Ceren Kabukcu sought to determine the level of ancient agriculture and food preparation through the analysis of carbonized plant food remains that they found4 in the Franchthi and Shanidar caves. These sites are located in Greece’s Peloponnesian peninsula and in the Zagros Mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan, respectively (see figure).

Kabukcu’s team analyzed four plant aggregates, the charred residues of food preparation, recovered from the Franchthi Cave. Using a scanning electron microscope, the researchers determined that the residues included processed lentils, pea seeds, and bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia), a broad bean species. The observed damage to the plant cells revealed that the seeds were soaked, then subjected to coarse grinding and/or pounding, and then charred. They also found evidence that the food had been mashed and boiled. Such food processing would make the seeds easy to chew and digest. It also transformed the bitter vetch from being poisonous for human consumption to a flavorful spice. Previous research teams had found the processed remains of oats, barley, almonds, and pistachios at the Franchthi Cave.5 Kabukcu and her colleagues measured carbon-14 dates for the four aggregates that ranged from 13,100 to 12,900 years ago.

The team then analyzed five charred plant aggregates recovered from the Shanidar Cave. The food residues in these aggregates included pistachios, peas, and a variety of mustards. Here, too, they found evidence that the peas, nuts, and mustards had been soaked, ground, mashed, boiled, and charred. The carbon-14 dates for the five aggregates showed that the food therein had been cooked and eaten at least 40,000 years ago.

In another study, three Israeli researchers found charred plant macrofossils (large enough to be seen without a microscope) in the Kebara Cave (Mt. Carmel, Israel) showing that early humans were processing and eating wild almonds, acorns, and vetches in addition to peas, lentils, and fruits.6 Wild acorns, almonds, and vetches in their natural state are filled with tannins, cyanide, astringents, and other toxic compounds. Making such foods safe to eat requires a complex combination of soaking, grinding, roasting, mashing, and boiling. The charred food, seeds, and nuts found in the Kebara Cave date previous to 40,000 years ago. Electron spin resonance indicates that the charred food, seeds, and nuts date from 65,000 to 48,000 years ago. However, electron spin resonance dating is subject to large systematic errors.7

The Israeli researchers concluded that the diet of early humans must have been predominantly plant-based and the plants they consumed were more diverse than previously thought. They demonstrated that the labor needed to transform toxic plants into food that can be safely eaten is so large and complex that early humans would have undertaken such measures only if the quantities of plants being so transformed were huge. Their explanation for why such plant remains are rarely found in Paleolithic excavations is that “most caves and open-air sites did not encourage the preservation of these kinds of organics.”8

Evidence for complex food preparation by early humans is not limited to Europe and the Middle East. Archaeobotanical studies in Borneo uncovered evidence that humans 50,000–40,000 years ago were processing highly toxic yams and nuts into safe and edible foods.9 These studies now establish beyond reasonable doubt that complex food processing and preparation was ubiquitous among early humans.

Implications of Early Complex Food Preparation
A naturalistic bias imposed on the origin and history of human beings asserts that the first humans possessed technology and manifested behavior that is indistinguishable from the technology and behavior of Neanderthals, Denisovans, and Homo erectus. This same bias also avows that for early anatomically modern humans technology and behavior advanced at a slow, gradual pace.

However, the latest discoveries by paleoanthropologists now soundly refute these naturalistic beliefs. There is no scientific evidence, at least no evidence that is not widely disputed, that the bipedal primates that preceded anatomically modern humans had control over fire, ever engaged in cooking, or purposefully roasted, ground, or boiled their food. Instead, there is now widespread evidence that all early humans were engaged in these activities. This evidence sustains the biblical claims about the technological capability of the earliest generations of humanity. It also sustains the biblical doctrine of human exceptionalism.

A fossil discovery of an extinct rat species may provide evidence for early human migration routes and for the location of the Garden of Eden.

Six years ago, I wrote an article about alluvial fan deposits that revealed three epochs (~55,000, 75,000–130,000, and 150,000–160,000 years ago) during which humans could have easily migrated back and forth from the Persian Gulf region and eastern Africa.1 I explained how such an easy migration route accords with a consistent interpretation of all the scientific and biblical data on human origins. A new subfossil find adds evidence for this consistency. I’ll discuss the discovery after a review of the data concerning the timing and location of early humans.

Scientific and Biblical Data on Human Origins
Archaeological artifacts place the origin of humanity in eastern and southern Africa 50,000–90,000 years ago. Similar archaeological artifacts and human remains locate humans in the Levant (region occupied today by Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria) during the same date range. Mitochondrial and y-chromosomal DNA analysis dates the origin of humans at 10,000–300,000 years ago. Evidence for the earliest villages and towns, specialized agriculture and manufacture of household goods, and trade places the origin of civilization in the Persian Gulf region and Mesopotamia about 12,000–13,000 years ago. In addition to archaeological and DNA evidence, Antarctic and Greenland ice cores establish that the last ice age persisted from 12,000 to about 130,000 years ago.

In the date range 45,000–250,000 years ago, scientists lack a radioisotope decay dating method that they can apply to human remains and artifacts. In this date range, they have no recourse but to use dating methods that involve large known and unknown systematic errors. These systematic errors often shift dates to older values. The biblical accounts of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and of Noah’s flood imply that humans were living in the Persian Gulf region and the environs of Mesopotamia during much of the last ice age.2 Genesis 2 declares that four known rivers (the Euphrates, Tigris, Pishon, and Gihon) flowing from different regions converge in the Garden of Eden. Evidence shows that the only place they come close together is in the southeastern part of what is now the Persian Gulf, presently more than 200 feet below sea level. However, during nearly the entire last ice age this location was above sea level.

Genesis 7 and 8 state that the waters of Noah’s flood quickly rose over a 40-day period and took nearly a year to recede. Such gradual receding would require a huge amount of melting ice and snow to replace the waters flowing out into the ocean. This quantity of ice and snow implies that Noah’s flood occurred at some time during the last ice age.  

New Evidence of Easy Migration Routes for Early Humans
In a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, a team of 13 paleontologists and ecologists led by Ignacio Lazagabaster reported on their discovery of subfossils of an extinct subspecies of the eastern African crested rat, Lophiomys imhausi maremortum, in the Levant.3 The specific location of the subfossil find was in a cliff cave near the Dead Sea. Previously, fossils of this particular species of rat had only been found in eastern Africa.

The dates for the newly discovered subfossils range from 42,000 to 103,000 years ago and possibly even earlier. As mentioned, measured dates in the range of 45,000–250,000 years ago are subject to potentially large systematic errors.

The discovery of portions of the skeletons of this crested rat species in the Levant establishes that an easy migration route for rodents must have existed between central-eastern Africa and the Levant at various times from 42,000 to 103,000 years ago. If it was easy for rodents to migrate from central-eastern Africa to the Levant, then it would have been even easier for humans to migrate back and forth between the two regions at that time.

The Fertile Crescent, a crescent-shaped, soil-rich region in the Middle East, made for easy human migration between the Levant and the Persian Gulf region. Humans could have migrated virtually continuously between the Levant and the Persian Gulf region during the present interglacial and during the whole of the last ice age.

Discovery Implications
The discovery of subfossils of the rare crested rat in the Levant establishes that for the earliest humans there were at least two easy migration routes between the Persian Gulf region and eastern Africa. In addition to this Fertile Crescent route, in 2015 I discussed a passage from the Persian Gulf region across southern Arabia, along the Gihon River, and the land bridge that joined southwestern Arabia to eastern Africa.4

During the last ice age (12,000 to 130,000 years ago) humans would have had several opportunities to migrate rapidly back and forth between the Persian Gulf region and eastern Africa. The first migrations likely involved just a few individuals or families, so we should not be surprised at the lack of archaeological and DNA evidence for these first migrations. And yet, given the strong textual clues in Genesis that both the Garden of Eden events and Noah’s flood occurred during an ice age, there is every reason to conclude that the biblical, genetic, paleontological, and archaeological data on human origins and early history is fully compatible and self-consistent.

The discovery of two ancient ovens in Jordan provides evidence that humans were making bread at a time consistent with the Bible’s account of early human history. In chapter 15 of my book Improbable Planet1, I described an archaeological/scientific discovery2 that established that humans living along the shore of the Sea of Galilee were selectively breeding and cultivating wild grains at least as long ago as 23,000 years before the present. The breeding and cultivation of such grains suggest that humans living 23,000 years ago were using the grains as a food staple that likely may have included the manufacture of bread or bread-like products.

In a previous blog3 I wrote about another archaeological/scientific discovery.4 Here, a team of five anthropologists and archaeologists unearthed a grinding tool from the Grotta Paglicci cave in southern Italy, from which they recovered “thermally pretreated” oat grains. The team achieved an accurate carbon-14 date of the grains showing that humans living 32,614 ± 429 years ago were grinding and roasting grains to manufacture flour.

Now, a team of five researchers, led by Amaia Arranz-Otaegui, have analyzed a site in Jordan and discovered two ovens that they concluded provides clear evidence that humans were using them to make bread or bread-like products 14,400 years ago.5 The site, Shubayqa 1, is located in northeastern Jordan in an area known as the Black Desert. The archaeological remains at Shubayqa 1 indicate that humans were using the site from 14,600–11,600 years ago and were primarily engaged in hunting and gathering.

Arranz-Otaegui’s team found an organic residue in one of two sunken fireplaces (see figure below) constructed of basalt flagstones. They analyzed this residue with a scanning electron microscope and identified 24 pieces of char that possessed the chemical and structural properties of ground cereal grains that had been mixed with water and baked or fried to make a flatbread. The team determined that the char pieces included at least one processed grain, wild einkorn wheat (Triticum boeoticum) and at least one root tuber, club-rush tuber (Bolboschoenus glaucus).

The carbon-14 date for the residue was 14,400 years ago. In their paper Arranz-Otaegui’s team drew two conclusions from the findings. They wrote that their results “demonstrate that the preparation and consumption of bread-like products predated the emergence of agriculture by at least 4,000 years.”6 Second, they stated that the slim archaeobotanical evidence they found showed that cereal exploitation for making bread was not common 14,600–11,600 years ago, and that bread became a staple for humanity only when agriculture based on the large-scale cultivation of grains was firmly established circa 9,100 years ago.7

In light of the previous discoveries and what I have written about early food-processing preparation and technology,8 I am persuaded that three more conclusions can be drawn. First, the evidence for humans engaging in the processing of grains for food preparation 32,600, 23,000, and 14,400 years ago indicates that throughout the last ice age, humans were continuously or near continuously engaging in some kind of bread-making industry. This industry was being practiced in spite of the extreme climate instability that existed throughout the last ice age.9

Second, the observation that bread did not become a staple in the human diet until the large-scale cultivation of grains was established is no reflection of any lack of motivation, innovation, or work ethic on the part of humans living before 9,100 years ago. The extreme climate stability that is needed to make the large-scale cultivation of grains did not exist until 9,100 years ago.10 Previous to that time, the global mean temperature was fluctuating by ±22° Fahrenheit (12° Celsius) on timescales of only a few centuries. Such extreme temperature fluctuations made the large-scale cultivation of grains impossible. Because of extreme climate instability, humans living before 9,100 years ago could not afford to live on bread alone or on any other one or two or three sources of food. Survival during that time required a predominantly hunter-gatherer economy supplemented by highly varied, small-scale agriculture.

Arranz-Otaegui’s team’s discovery complements the two previous discoveries on food-processing technology. It further substantiates the Bible’s accounts of the early history of humanity (Genesis 4) and the industry and technology employed by the first humans.

Genesis 1–2, Matthew 19, and Romans 5 declare that all of humanity is descended from one man and one woman. These biblical sources also imply that the original human couple most likely began their existence in the southeastern part of what is now the Persian Gulf.

For all this scientific and biblical data on human origins to be consistent, there must have been an easy route that, at some time or times during the last ice age, facilitated rapid migration between eastern Africa and the Persian Gulf region. Because sea levels during the last ice age were 100–350 feet lower than at present, a water barrier would not have prevented these migrations. Most of what is now the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea was dry land at that time. Because the southwest tip of Arabia was connected to the Horn of Africa, humans could have walked from the Persian Gulf region into Africa and vice versa (see figure 1).

The biggest barrier to human migration between Africa and the Persian Gulf-Mesopotamia region is Rub’ al Khali (the “Empty Quarter”). Rub’ al Khali is an enormous sand desert encompassing the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. It is nothing but sand, gravel, and gypsum in a region measuring 1,000 km x 600 km. With an average daily maximum temperature throughout the year of 47°C (117°F) Rub’ al Khali has been impassable until the advent of modern transportation technology.

recent study of alluvial fan deposits in Rub’ al Khali reveals that the region has not always been so inhospitable. A team of seven geologists found that drainage systems in the region were activated at three different times: 150,000–160,000 years ago; 75,000–130,000 years ago; and about 55,000 years ago.1 They noted that these three epochs correspond to known episodes of monsoon activity in the region. During these epochs Rub’ al Khali would have been humid, much cooler, and laced with lakes and rivers. Under such conditions regional vegetation would have flourished.

The availability of fresh water and local vegetation would have made human migration across the Arabian bridge not only easy but inevitable. Genesis 2:13 describes the Gihon River flowing out from the mountains of Cush into the Garden of Eden. Cush is normally identified with the mountainous region within and surrounding Ethiopia. However, during the last ice age, that mountainous region would have included the mountains in the southwest tip of the present-day Arabian Peninsula. Satellite imagery reveals a dry riverbed extending from that southwest tip into the southern part of the Persian Gulf. That river, flowing with water and with abundant food plants growing along its banks, would have presented an inviting transportation corridor connecting the Persian Gulf region to eastern Africa.

In addition to the three monsoon epochs, brief episodes of rapid ice-melt on the mountains of Arabia watered Rub’ al Khali. Thus, during the last ice age (12,000 to 120,000 years ago) there would have been several opportunities for humans to migrate rapidly between the two regions. Given the strong textual clues in Genesis that both the Garden of Eden events and Noah’s flood occurred during an ice age,2 there is every reason to conclude that the biblical, genetic, and archeological data on human origins and early history is fully compatible and self-consistent. Given, too, that the first migration over the Arabian bridge likely involved just a few individuals or a single family, we should not be surprised at the lack of archeological and DNA evidence for this first migration or for the first human families.

The journey from simple stone tools to modern technology isn’t just about increasing complexity. It’s about the emergence of symbolic thinking, creative expression, and spiritual awareness that appeared suddenly and dramatically with true humans.

This perspective aligns perfectly with the biblical account of Adam and Eve, showing how science and Scripture work together to tell the same remarkable story.

We All Use Tools

The use of all tools shows the ability to plan ahead and solve problems. This remarkable trait appears in both animals and humans, though in very different ways. God created both animals and humans with this ability, but humans were given a far greater capacity to create, innovate, and express purpose through tools.

  • Sea otters use flat rocks to crack open clams and shellfish, turning over on their backs in the water to use their bellies as anvils.

  • Crows craft hooks from twigs to fish out insects, showing remarkable problem-solving abilities.

  • Capuchin monkeys select specific stones to crack open nuts, choosing the right tool for the job.

Animals create and use tools at a basic level.

The use of tools is actually widespread in the animal kingdom:

  • Sea otters use flat rocks to crack open clams and shellfish, turning over on their backs in the water to use their bellies as anvils.
  • Dolphins use sea sponges to protect their snouts during foraging, carefully selecting the right size and shape for their needs.
  • Crows craft hooks from twigs to fish out insects, showing remarkable problem-solving abilities.
  • Octopuses carry coconut shells as armor, demonstrating forward planning.
  • Herons use various items as bait to catch fish, showing they understand cause and effect.
  • Elephants use branches to swat flies away, modifying natural materials for their needs.
  • Capuchin monkeys select specific stones to crack open nuts, choosing the right tool for the job.

This use of tools among animals drives home an important point. Tool use isn’t a defining feature of God’s image. In fact, the tool used by chimpanzees is comparable to the tool use of some hominins like Homo habilis and Homo erectus.

Humans create and use tools at a complex level. We’ve developed spears, hammers, crossbows, tractors, telescopes, computers, and countless other innovations. But what truly sets human tools apart isn’t just their complexity.

While some animals show cleverness, only humans show advancement. We refine and innovate tools generation after generation. The same stagnation we observe in animal tool use also appears in the hominin record. Neanderthals were on Earth longer than modern humans have been, but their technology remained essentially unchanged.

Our technology has exploded from primitive to sophisticated in a remarkably short time. There must be something to explain this difference. We believe it’s the image of God reflected in our symbolic capacity.

When Did Humans Start Using Tools?

Before we answer this question, we need to define our terms carefully. In scientific circles, the word “human” can mean different things depending on what you believe about our origins.

In this article, the word “human” is used with precision. We don’t use it to describe every primate creature with upright posture or a large brain. Instead, “human” is reserved for the descendants of Adam and Eve. These are beings who aren’t just biologically advanced but also spiritual image-bearers of God.

Some scientists refer to extinct hominins like Homo habilis or Neanderthals as “early humans,” but we see those beings as merely animal primates. They were biologically impressive animals, but not truly human in a theological or spiritual sense.

Humans are us, the descendants of the first two humans, Adam and Eve. We’re spiritual beings uniquely created in the image of God and distinct from all other creatures. Though biologically classified as Homo sapiens, humans aren’t the result of evolutionary processes, and we’re much more than our biology.

We’re a distinct creation, specially made with inherent dignity, value, and purpose. Some refer to us as “modern humans” to suggest we evolved from earlier species, but humans didn’t evolve from animals. We were created with spiritual capacity and moral responsibility from the beginning. Our unique identity shows up clearly in the archaeological record.

Hominins are a group of extinct primate species like australopithecines, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and others that appear in the fossil record. They share some physical similarities with humans, but hominins are nonhuman creatures.

They were biologically advanced animals created by God but were not spiritual beings made in his image. While they may have used crude tools or displayed limited intelligence, they’re not considered part of the human lineage in a theological or spiritual sense.

Neanderthals represent a specific type of hominin, created by God with impressive cognitive and physical capabilities, but still not fully human. Neanderthals were intelligent creatures capable of tool use, limited culture, and maybe even some crude symbolic behaviors. But they ultimately lacked the image of God.

They were still alive when Adam and Eve were created but went extinct shortly afterward. Neanderthals weren’t our ancestors, though some interbreeding with humans may have occurred on a biological level.

Now we can answer the question properly. From the time of their creation around 130,000 years ago, humans (Homo sapiens) have used tools. But unlike the simple tools of earlier hominins, human tools show creativity and symbolic purpose.

The archaeological record shows an explosion of innovation when the first true humans appear. Sophisticated hunting weapons, finely crafted blades, sewing needles, musical instruments, and even tools used to create art all appear suddenly. This sudden cultural advancement reflects far more than survival. It reveals a spiritual capacity for beauty, planning, and symbolic thought.

Human tool innovation appears abruptly and fully formed, consistent with the view that humans were specially created with intelligence, purpose, and the image of God. Before the appearance of humans, hominins created only crude tools. Even though they lived on Earth four times longer than humans have so far, their tool use remained unchanged and stagnant, showing no signs of advancement or innovation over time.

The hominin tool timeline tells this story clearly. Hominins began using tools perhaps as early as 3.4 million years ago. No stone tools have been discovered with australopithecines, but animal bones show signs of butchery. The australopithecines most likely used tools made from sticks, similar to what chimpanzees use today.

The habilines, such as Homo habilis, are traditionally considered the first makers of stone tools. These tools appear in the archaeological record about 2.6 million years ago and are known as Oldowan technology. (In archeology, “technology” simply means how tools were made and used—not to be confused with modern machines or electronics.)

These were flakes produced from a rock (called the core stone) that was hit with another rock (called the hammerstone). There’s some evidence that Homo habilis also used bones to make tools, in addition to stones.

Oldowan technology remained unchanged for nearly 800,000 years before it was replaced by a new technology associated with Homo erectus, called Acheulean technology. Acheulean tool making appeared around 1.76 million years ago and lasted until about 300,000 years ago when the erectines disappeared from the fossil record.

The tools of this era tend to be more symmetric and standardized. These hominins produced a range of different tool types including hand axes (teardrop-shaped tools), cleavers (large tools with broad, straight cutting edges), picks (used for digging or processing tough materials), and flakes (produced as byproducts that were deliberately used as smaller tools).

Mousterian technology is associated with Neanderthals. It appeared around 300,000 years ago until about 28,000 years ago. Mousterian technology was more sophisticated than Acheulean technology. Mousterian tools were prepared using a distinct method called the Levallois technique, which could be used to prepare a variety of tools from chipped flakes.

Crude Tools: What They Are and Why They Matter

Understanding crude or simple tools helps us see the dramatic difference between hominin and human capabilities. Crude tools represent basic functionality without refinement or symbolic meaning.

  • Flakes and cores were small, sharp stone flakes chipped off a larger rock (core) and used for cutting meat or plants. These weren’t shaped or refined, just the result of a few strikes with another rock. 
  • Choppers were rounded stones with one sharpened edge, used for smashing bones, cracking nuts, or chopping vegetation.
  • Hand Axes were teardrop-shaped rocks with minimal symmetry, used for cutting or scraping. While slightly more advanced than flakes, early versions still lacked fine craftsmanship.
  • Hammerstones were basic stones used to strike other materials, usually to create flakes or crack open bones. No handles or shaping were involved. 
  • Digging sticks used by some hominins were simple wooden sticks used for foraging roots or insects. They weren’t carved or crafted, just selected and used.

What makes these tools “crude”?

What makes these tools “crude” is the lack of complex planning or standardization. They show minimal shaping, just a few strikes to get a rough edge. There are no handles or composite materials, no symbolic decoration or specialized functions.

We can tell the difference between genuine early human tools and Neanderthal tools in several ways. As previously mentioned, Neanderthals produced a distinct set of tools called Mousterian technology. Neanderthal tools were larger and more robust, formed using the Levallois technique.

Modern humans produced tools using a technique that involved chipping away smaller flakes with much greater precision. Modern human tools showed much greater variety than Neanderthal tools and were much more standardized.

One big difference relates to technological advancement. The tools made by Neanderthals were static. They didn’t change over the entire duration that Neanderthals were on Earth. The tools made by modern humans showed technological advancements, from primitive tools of the Upper Paleolithic to the sophisticated high-tech tools we use today. We also see clear, undisputed evidence of symbolism associated with modern human artifacts.

How Did Humans Drive the Evolution of Tools?

After Adam and Eve were created 130,000 years ago, we begin to see a sudden “explosion” of human culture. Art, language, music, and religious expression all appear together. Each of these points to a unique human ability to think symbolically, express deep meaning, and reflect spiritual awareness. No other creature possesses this ability, only humans.

This ability to use symbolism as creative and spiritual beings also sparked an unprecedented leap in tool innovation. It transformed the way humans designed and used tools.

What are some examples of symbolic behavior?

  • Cave art provides powerful examples of symbolic behavior. Prehistoric tools were essential for creating these masterpieces. Stone scrapers prepared surfaces, hollow bones served as tubes for blowing pigment, and mineral-based tools created paints. Prehistoric tools made the artistic expression possible, but the art itself reveals symbolic thinking that goes far beyond survival needs.
  • Burial practices show another dimension of symbolic tool use. Early human tools found in graves were often finely crafted and placed with personal ornaments or red ochre. These items were positioned with care, not just for utility, but to signify honor or belief in an afterlife. This behavior isn’t seen in animals. These tools demonstrate both symbolic intent and a leap in design complexity.
  • Jewelry required specialized tools used by early humans for shaping, drilling, and threading. Shell beads and engraved pendants show a shift from basic tool use to refined craftsmanship with symbolic meaning tied to identity or status. The precision required reveals advanced planning and abstract thinking.
  • Musical instruments provide perhaps the clearest evidence of symbolic capacity. Ancient flutes made from bird bones and ivory were carved with precision tools, showing a high degree of planning, creativity, and abstract thinking. The tools used by early humans to make instruments were as carefully designed as the instruments themselves. This provides further evidence of symbolic and spiritual expression.

The presence of symbolism in the archaeological record aligns perfectly with the sudden appearance of humans. This symbolic capacity isn’t found in earlier hominins or animals. Evolutionary biologists still can’t explain the origin of language, which represents the pinnacle of our symbolic capacity.

Human tool innovation didn’t just evolve—it erupted alongside spiritual and symbolic awareness, revealing a mind uniquely made in the image of God.

What Makes Human Tools Unique?

Several key characteristics distinguish human tools from those made by animals or hominins, revealing our special nature as image-bearers of God.

  • Humans build on what came before. Unlike animals, humans don’t just make tools, we improve them over time. We’ve gone from sharp rocks to robots and rockets by learning from past generations. This cumulative improvement shows up nowhere else in the natural world.
  • Humans plan ahead in remarkable ways. Human tools aren’t just made in the moment. We design them with specific purposes in mind, whether for farming, building, making music, or solving problems we anticipate in the future. This forward-thinking capacity reflects our ability to mentally travel through time.
  • Humans use tools in the stone age and beyond for more than survival. Animals use tools mostly to get food. Humans do that too, often in much more complex ways, but we also use tools for art, worship, communication, and exploring the world. These uses show deeper meaning and imagination that transcends basic survival needs.
  • Humans teach each other in sophisticated ways. Toolmaking isn’t instinctual or just copied through observation. It’s actively taught. Parents and teachers pass down knowledge so others can learn and improve upon it. This means our knowledge grows as a community, creating an ever-expanding base of technological capability.
  • Some tools have deep meaning beyond their practical function. We use tools to express who we are or what we believe. Musical instruments and religious objects aren’t just helpful, they’re meaningful. A handmade cross, a paintbrush, or even a flag can carry deep symbolic value. These tools connect us to beauty, purpose, and something bigger than ourselves.
  • This transformation started suddenly, according to the archaeological record. The leap in toolmaking didn’t happen slowly or gradually. When humans showed up, advanced tools appeared rapidly alongside art, music, and religious expression. It all points to something more than intelligence. It reveals our spiritual nature and the image of God.

This pattern continues today. While animal tool use remains essentially unchanged, human technology continues advancing at an accelerating pace. From prehistoric tools to smartphones and space shuttles, we see continuous innovation driven by our unique capacity for symbolic thought, creativity, and spiritual awareness.

The use of tools by early humans established patterns we still follow today. We create tools not just for survival, but for beauty, meaning, and connection with the divine. This reflects our fundamental nature as beings created in God’s image, designed for relationship with our Creator and dominion over the natural world.


Conclusion

The story of the evolution of tools reveals something remarkable about human nature. While Neanderthals may have made markings on cave walls and buried their dead, intentional activity doesn’t automatically carry meaning.

A dog may intentionally bury a bone, but it’s not creating a memorial or making a symbolic statement. It’s simply acting on instinct. The act is deliberate, but it doesn’t carry deeper meaning.

Human tools tell a different story entirely. They’re not just more advanced than animal tools, they’re meaningful. They show we’re more than clever animals. We’re creative, intentional, and spiritual beings designed to reflect the image of our Creator.

The archaeological record supports this view beautifully. Stone tools made by hominins remained essentially unchanged for hundreds of thousands of years. But when humans appeared, tool technology exploded with innovation, artistry, and symbolic meaning. This wasn’t gradual evolution, it was a sudden emergence of capabilities that reflect our spiritual nature.

From prehistoric tools to modern technology, we see consistent patterns of innovation, meaning, and spiritual expression that set humans apart from all other creatures. This supports the biblical account of special creation rather than gradual evolution from animal ancestors.

As we explained earlier, Neanderthal tools were larger and remained static for hundreds of thousands of years, whereas human tools were more intricate and continued to advance over time. Another distinction is we see clear, undisputed evidence of symbolism associated with human artifacts. Such evidence is absent from Neanderthal tool collections.

A careful reading of Scripture leaves no room for human evolution. Genesis 2 indicates that humans were directly and personally made by God in his image (Genesis 1:26–27). From the point of our creation, we haven’t evolved, apart from minor microevolutionary changes that don’t affect our fundamental nature or capabilities.

Our intelligence comes from an interplay of brain structures designed to support human intelligence and our immaterial nature (mind, soul, spirit). It’s endowed to us by our Creator’s handiwork, not developed through evolutionary processes over millions of years.

Tools used by early humans have allowed humans to thrive in diverse locations around the world, including regions with harsh climates and challenging conditions. Tools have enabled human civilization, transforming humans from hunter-gatherers to builders of complex societies. While our tool usage has evolved through cultural development, our fundamental biology and intelligence haven’t changed since creation.

The fact that we make tools that don’t contribute directly to our survival provides evidence of the image of God. Humans spend enormous amounts of time, effort, and resources creating symbolic artifacts. This time could theoretically be better spent hunting, gathering food, or producing clothing and shelter materials.

In fact, evolutionary biologists struggle to explain our desire to create art and music because our aesthetic sense doesn’t contribute to survival in any obvious way.

This drive to create meaningful, beautiful, and symbolic tools reflects our spiritual nature. We’re not just biological creatures focused on survival and reproduction, we’re spiritual beings designed for creativity, beauty, worship, and relationship with our Creator.

The evolution of tools from simple survival implements to complex artistic and symbolic objects reveals this fundamental aspect of human nature that sets us apart from all other creatures.

To understand the longevity of biblical figures, we must first examine the scriptural accounts of their lifespans. The Bible provides detailed information about the ages of early humans, particularly in the book of Genesis.

Genesis 5 and the Ages of the Patriarchs

Genesis 5 presents a genealogy of the patriarchs from Adam to Noah, recording remarkably long lifespans. For example:

  • Adam lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5)
  • Seth lived 912 years (Genesis 5:8)
  • Methuselah, the longest-lived person in the Bible, lived 969 years (Genesis 5:27)

Interestingly, Genesis 5 adds the phrase “and then he died” at the end of each patriarch’s record. This repetition serves a significant purpose: It demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s warning to Adam that eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would result in death (Genesis 2:17). While Adam and his descendants did not die immediately upon sinning, their mortality was established, and death became an inevitable part of human existence.

Old Testament Lifespans After the Flood

A notable shift occurs in human lifespans after the Noahic flood. Genesis 11 records a gradual decline in the ages of the patriarchs:

This decline aligns with God’s declaration in Genesis 6:3: “Then the Lord said, ‘My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.'” This statement has been interpreted in two ways:

  • As a limit on human lifespan to 120 years
  • As a 120-year warning period before the flood

Regardless of the interpretation, the biblical record clearly shows a significant reduction in human lifespans following the flood.

New Testament Lifespans

By the time of the New Testament, human lifespans had further decreased to lengths more familiar to us today. While specific ages are not always mentioned, we can infer that most individuals lived between 60–80 years, similar to modern life expectancies in developed countries.

Jesus himself, in his earthly ministry, lived to be about 33 years old. The apostle Paul, though his exact age at death is unknown, likely lived to be around 60–65 years old based on historical records and biblical chronology.

How Did People Live So Long in the Bible?

The assertion that humans once lived for hundreds of years may seem implausible to many. However, recent advances in the field of biogerontology (the study of biological mechanisms of aging) have provided intriguing insights that lend credibility to the biblical accounts. Let’s explore some scientific explanations for how people in the Bible might have lived so long.

Protection Against Reactive Oxygen Species

Think of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like tiny sparks in a machine. During normal activity, these sparks occasionally fly out, and over time, they start to wear down the parts—damaging the machine’s wires, gears, and fuel lines. Similarly, ROS, which are unstable molecules, are produced as part of our cells’ regular metabolism. These molecules can harm vital components like DNA, proteins, and fats, which contribute to the aging process as the damage builds up over time.

Thankfully, our bodies have their own built-in “fire extinguishers”—protective enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase—that help keep ROS damage in check. Studies have shown that by increasing these protective enzymes in laboratory animals, scientists can extend their lifespan by up to 40%.

As we conclude our exploration of humanity’s historical migration, let’s also consider some spiritual and moral points that may be relevant to us today. The Bible offers several insights we can apply to human migration that emphasize unity, law and borders, and our shared heritage.

Unity and Shared Heritage

Scripture emphasizes that we are all connected—a truth science supports through genetic ancestry. As the saying goes, “We are all Africans under our skin.” This commonality reminds us of our shared lineage and the fundamental unity of humankind. We are all the descendants of immigrants that bear the image of God.

Compassion and Hospitality

The Bible stresses that fellow human beings should treat strangers and migrants with compassion and kindness. Exodus 22:21 says, “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” This passage calls us to remember our own pasts and to treat others with the grace and empathy we would wish for ourselves.

Ephesians 2:11–22 expands on this theme by inviting all people to become part of God’s family. It reminds us that, spiritually speaking, we were all once strangers and aliens until Jesus Christ welcomed us as citizens in his kingdom.

Borders and Laws

While the Bible emphasizes unity and hospitality, it also acknowledges the importance of borders and laws for national protection.

  • Leviticus 24:22 says, “You are to have the same law for the foreigner and the native-born,” meaning the foreigner who resides among you.
  • Nehemiah 4:7–23 stresses the importance of rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls to protect the community and maintain its security. 
  • Romans 13:1–7 discusses the role of authorities and the importance of law and order, which can be seen as a foundation for the concept of national borders and governance.
  • Acts 17:26 says God made all nations and determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.

The challenge is to balance security with compassion. The Bible encourages us to seek wisdom and justice and strive for solutions that honor both our shared humanity and the unique identities of nations.

And while the understanding of dinosaurs in the Bible may not make a difference for our salvation, we can grow in our knowledge of God when we study and learn about all that he created.

Before We Talk Dinosaurs: Our Biblical Framework

At Reasons to Believe, we approach these questions from an old-earth creationist (OEC) perspective. Before we talk about dinosaurs, it helps to understand this view.

Old-earth creationism begins with a high regard for Scripture. We believe Genesis is a true historical account of creation and should be interpreted carefully in light of its original language and context.

We understand the six days of creation as real, ordered acts of God, but not necessarily limited to 24-hour days. This understanding is derived from the biblical text itself.

In the original Hebrew, the word translated “day” (yom) is used throughout Scripture to describe different lengths of time depending on context. Genesis gives clear boundaries to each creation day, but it does not require them to be equal in length or tied to Earth’s rotation.

In short, the old-earth view doesn’t reinterpret Scripture to fit science. It seeks to take both God’s Word and God’s world seriously.

It’s also important to clarify what this view does not affirm. While we hold that the earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old, we do not accept macroevolutionary theory. We believe God created humans—Adam and Eve—uniquely and directly in his image.

With that groundwork laid, let’s get to the fun!

What Does the Bible Say About Dinosaurs?

Like we mentioned, Genesis 1 is a historical account of God’s creative work. Yet, Genesis 1 is not an exhaustive description of creation. Instead, it offers snapshots of the creation story.

While the Bible describes many historical accounts, it doesn’t provide all-inclusive summaries of every historical event. God in his goodness gave every generation his inspired Word with precisely what we need to know for our salvation. Nothing less and nothing more.

With that in mind, you won’t find direct mention of dinosaurs in the Bible.

The Bible is ultimately about God’s redemptive plan for humanity. Since dinosaurs are not part of the salvation story, we shouldn’t worry about their absence from Scripture.

Nevertheless, these fascinating creatures are well worth exploring and learning about. As we discover more about all that God created, including the dinosaurs, we can learn more about who God is.

Did God Create Dinosaurs?

Even though you won’t find dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible, that doesn’t mean God didn’t create these magnificent creatures. It simply means dinosaurs didn’t make the highlight reel of Scripture. (And, yes, we’ll get to the mention of the Behemoth and Leviathan in the book of Job later!)

The scientific record tells us dinosaurs lived roughly 260 million years to 65 million years ago. For Christians, this could mean God created dinosaurs at the end of his fifth creation day or at the beginning of the sixth day before God created mankind.

Let’s review the Genesis 1 text on the days of creation, specifically when animal life began.

In Genesis 1:21–23 we read:

So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

This passage can be understood to mean that if there were dinosaurs who lived in water, God created these dinosaurs on the fifth day.

In Genesis 1:24–25, we learn that God created land animals (as well as mankind) on the sixth day of creation:

And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Scientifically we know there were three generations (or epochs) of dinosaurs. Let’s break these generations down in chronological order:

  • Triassic
    Appeared around 260–200 million years ago
    Lived for 60 million years until they were wiped out during the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event
  • Jurassic
    Appeared around 200–145 million years ago
    Lived for 55 million years until they were wiped out during the Jurassic-Cretaceous extinction event
  • Cretaceous
    Appeared around 145–66 million years ago
    Lived for 80 million years until they were wiped out during the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event

Some people assume that spans of millions of years point to evolutionary theory. But that’s not what happened. In the above timeline, if dinosaurs were wiped out, then repopulated quickly and diversely, it leaves no time for complex evolutionary processes. 

Where Are Dinosaurs Mentioned in the Bible?

Again, we don’t believe you’ll find mention of dinosaurs in the Bible. But let’s take a look at some passages in Scripture that are often thought to be dinosaur descriptions.

Behemoth and Leviathan in the Book of Job

It has long been speculated that the book of Job mentions dinosaurs through its descriptions of the Behemoth and Leviathan in Job 40 and 41.

Let’s review the text, paying close attention to the poetic descriptions used.

In Job 40:15–19 the Lord says to Job:

Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit. Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron. It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.

In Job 41:1–2; 12–15; 19–21, the Lord continues with a long description of the Leviathan:

(1–2) Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook? (12–15) I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form. Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor? Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth? Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together; (19–21) Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.

Before the nineteenth century, Christians who read this passage believed the Behemoth and Leviathan poetically described the hippopotamus and crocodile, respectively.

It wasn’t until dinosaur fossils were first described in 1677 by Robert Plot that some people began to refer to these descriptions as dinosaurs. Examples include the Triceratops (known to be a plant eater) or Tyrannosaurus (known to be the most fearsome of the dinosaurs).

The difficulty with this interpretation is that no creatures on Earth—alive or extinct—literally fit these descriptions. For example, there is no known fire-breathing animal that had body parts of actual bronze and iron. It’s important to remember that Job 40 isn’t a zoological field guide; it’s a poetic reflection on God’s creative power.

There’s also a possibility that these fearsome beasts are a part of the supernatural realm and not creatures that commonly roamed Earth.

So why would God take the time to describe these beasts in such detail?  

Ultimately to explain his command over everything! While Job could not fathom taming such creatures, God explains that he is the only One who has made and can tame his creation.

It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword (Job 40:19).

What an incredible Creator we worship!

Did Dinosaurs Live with Humans?

Since we hold an old-earth creationist view, we maintain that the days of creation were long periods of time (epochs, eras, eons). However, we do not hold to an evolutionary theory. With that in mind, we believe God likely created dinosaurs on the sixth day, but they died off millions of years before he created Adam and Eve later in that same creation period.

Therefore, we do not believe dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time.

Our perspective differs from fellow Christians who hold a young-earth creationist (YEC) view. The YEC viewpoint says that the earth is closer to 6,000 years old, which means they do believe dinosaurs and early humans coexisted. They also believe there were dinosaurs on Noah’s ark.

Our RTB scholars approach both Scripture and the fossil record with confidence that they’re in harmony. We don’t need to dismiss or reinterpret the fossil record to make it fit the Bible. While God certainly could have created dinosaurs to live alongside humans, Scripture does not require that conclusion, nor does the scientific evidence support it.

Instead, the fossil record reveals that dinosaurs played a distinct and purposeful role in Earth’s history long before humans appeared—one that fits coherently within God’s broader plan for creation. When understood together, both Scripture and science point to a timeline that’s faithful to the biblical text and grounded in the physical evidence God has left for us to study.

Why Did God Create Dinosaurs?

On the surface, some people might see God’s creation of the dinosaurs as unnecessary if he created them just to be wiped out by mass extinction events. 

If dinosaurs were not included in Scripture, then what was God’s purpose for creating these incredible creatures? 

According to the fossil record, more species of life came into existence during the thousand years before humans were created (which, from an old-earth perspective, is during God’s fifth and sixth days of creation). The fossil record provides confirmation that there were sudden appearances of new life-forms on Earth, which points to God’s direct involvement in creating new life throughout the fifth and sixth days.

This means there is both biblical and scientific evidence for God’s creative activity of animal life on the fifth and six days in Genesis 1.

Christians can trust that God makes himself known to all humanity through his incredible work in creation. God’s creation of dinosaurs not only demonstrates the awesomeness and artistry of our Creator, but also reveals attributes of God’s character.

Romans 1:20 tells us this about God’s handiwork in relation to his character:

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

This passage gives us confidence that continued scientific exploration of the world around us leads to a deeper understanding of our Creator. God’s creation, along with the discoveries we make within it, continually points to him as the designer and sustainer of the universe.

So, even though the Bible doesn’t directly mention dinosaurs, we can trust that God made dinosaurs as an opportunity for us to discover the greatness of his handiwork and to worship him.

Why Would God Kill the Dinosaurs?

As Psalm 104:24–25 describes, God created animals in great quantity and with great diversity:

How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small.

God filled the earth with the maximum quantity and diversity of life as the physical conditions on Earth permitted.

During the ages of the dinosaurs, shallow seas and tall trees on the continents permitted land animals as large as the dinosaurs. Today, Earth’s physical conditions do not allow a land animal any larger than an elephant to thrive.

It could also be that God’s creation and extinction of the dinosaurs was intended to keep Earth packed with the greatest possible biomass (organic matter used as fuel), biodiversity (the variety of life in an ecosystem), and biocomplexity (complex environments formed through many individual parts).

This endowment ensures that humans have all the biodeposits needed to launch and sustain a global high-tech civilization. It displays how God prepared the planet for humanity and provided for us even before the creation of Adam and Eve.

Reading further into Psalm 104:27–30, we find a general understanding of why God would create and then remove any life from Earth.

All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

From this passage, we find reason to praise God for his sovereignty over creation and for his provision for all life.

Genesis 1 also provides insight into why God would kill the dinosaurs. It describes the changing conditions in the universe and on Earth between God’s creative activity and today. The creation story agrees with scientific models that estimate it took almost 4.6 billion years for the earth to attain the environmental conditions that support life today.

This process could explain the extinction/creation cycles: life-forms became extinct due to a changing environment, and new life-forms adapted to the new conditions God created.

So then, how does the extinction of dinosaurs fit into God’s plan?

We know the purpose of all of Scripture is to tell the story of God’s redemption plan for human beings. The focus of Genesis 1 is the creation of humans—God’s image bearers and ultimate creation. Thus, the creation and death of such intermediate life-forms like dinosaurs may have been necessary to bring about habitable conditions for humans to live on Earth.

One example of this preparation that we see in nature is that scientists believe the extinction of dinosaurs resulted in petroleum: the lifeblood of today’s advanced society.

Going back to Psalm 104, if our interpretation is correct, then God’s inspired Word was once again ahead of humans’ scientific discovery in its description of our natural world. The harmony between the biblical accounts of creation and the fossil record gives us confidence that the Bible reveals truth about the natural realm.

Does This Mean There Was Animal Death Before the Fall of Adam and Eve?

If our biblical and scientific interpretations accurately portray an old earth (4.5 billion years old), then yes, there would have been animal death before Adam and Eve’s original sin in the garden.

The idea of animal death prior to the fall does concern YECs. From a young-earth view, the fall was the event that introduced death for all life-forms. In other words, prior to Adam and Eve’s sin, young-earth believers hold that there was no animal or human death.

At RTB we believe Scripture provides a clear explanation on the question of animal death before the fall. Here is one passage (of many) that provides an answer.

Romans 5:12–14:

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

Paul’s statement in Romans that death entered the world through Adam’s sin does not teach that death entered the nonhuman creation for the very first time after the fall. This becomes clear when interpreted in the context of the original Greek translation.

Romans 5 teaches us that the covenantal penalty of death, as the wages of human sin, began at the fall of Adam.

From this perspective, it makes it a bit easier to grasp why God would allow animals (even the dinosaurs) to die prior to the fall.

What Killed the Dinosaurs, According to the Bible?

If there’s no direct mention of dinosaur extinction in Scripture, we also don’t expect to find an explanation for the extinction of dinosaurs in the Bible.

We know scientifically that there were three generations of dinosaurs (Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous) and each were wiped out by mass extinction events. While we can’t come to this conclusion through God’s inspired Word, we can learn about these extinction events through God’s record in nature.

God’s Sovereignty over Creation

As fun as it is to discuss the creation, purpose, and deaths of the dinosaurs, it’s even more amazing that no matter your conclusion, you can trust in God’s sovereignty.

If new discoveries of dinosaurs cropped up to prove either a young or old earth, our salvation as Christ-followers would remain unchanged.

If our OEC view is correct, then we should stand amazed at the foresight and creativity God exercises in his care for creation. We can especially marvel at his care for humans as he prepared and provided, millions of years in advance, a planet that was suitable for advanced human life.

We can praise God for the opportunity and curiosity that keeps us discovering more about him through our study of Scripture and his creation.

Neanderthals and early humans—how different were they, really?

Imagine walking the earth 50,000 years ago. You may have encountered creatures who looked somewhat like us, but weren’t quite human.

They hunted, gathered, and perhaps even cared for each other in ways similar to our ancestors. Yet, despite those similarities, the differences between Neanderthals and humans were significant.

The distinctions raise intriguing questions about our origins:

  • Were Neanderthals human?
  • What does it mean to be human?
  • Where do Neanderthals fit in the Bible’s story of creation?

Let’s examine what separates us from Neanderthals, why it matters, and how our old-earth creationist perspective differs from evolutionary theories.

What Are Neanderthals?

Fuz Rana explains who the Neanderthals were.

Neanderthals were a distinct species, created by God, that belonged to a group of creatures called hominins. They lived from about 300,000 to 40,000 years ago in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia before going extinct.

Even though Neanderthals were biologically similar to modern humans (Homo sapiens), they were different from humans in significant ways .

In fact, most biologists who believe in evolution would say Neanderthals are an evolutionary dead end, meaning they did not contribute to human evolution. Even for these scientists, Neanderthal DNA would be distinct from that of the human species.

At Reasons to Believe, our biologists hold that God as creator used similar designs for both humans and Neanderthals, but with key differences that set them apart.

Neanderthals were intelligent, capable of using tools, and they likely formed strong emotional bonds with others. However, they lacked something crucial that makes humans unique: the image of God.

This means that while Neanderthals could think, feel, and even behave in ways that seem humanlike, their cognitive abilities were inferior to those of modern humans.

Unlike you, they didn’t possess the same spiritual and intellectual gifts that come from bearing the image of the creator of the universe.

But you do.

You have the unique capacity for a relationship with God—something Neanderthals were not created to experience.

It’s a great reminder that you are fearfully and wonderfully made—not the product of an unguided evolutionary process.

Similarities Between Neanderthals and Humans

How closely do we resemble our ancient neighbors, the Neanderthals? While Neanderthals and humans share intriguing similarities, these parallels tell a story of design, not descent.

From their unique physical structures to their intriguing behaviors, these similar traits highlight the creativity of a common designer rather than suggesting a shared evolutionary path.

Let’s delve into the remarkable traits we share with Neanderthals and explore what they reveal about our unique origins.

Physical and Functional Similarities

Like us, Neanderthals walked upright on two legs. (They were “obligate bipeds” if you want to sound smart—that’s the fancy way of saying they always walked on two legs, just like we do.)

Brain Size

The average Neanderthal brain size was slightly larger than that of modern humans, but brain size alone doesn’t determine cognitive capacity. (See “Brain and Skull Differences” below.)

Genetic Similarities

Neanderthals shared 99.7% of their genetic material with humans. (To keep this in perspective, humans also share about 60% of our genes with bananas. Shared DNA doesn’t necessarily mean direct ancestry.) Neanderthals had 23 pairs of chromosomes, including evidence of a fused chromosome 2.

Behavior

Some researchers claim Neanderthals were very similar to us in terms of their behavior. But some anthropologists and those of us at Reasons to Believe dispute and reject these behavioral claims based on counterevidence, which we’ll explore in the next section.

As you consider these similarities, you might wonder how creatures so similar to us could be fundamentally different.

Differences Between Neanderthals and Humans

Physical and Functional Differences

Despite overall similarities, Neanderthals and humans have significant morphological differences (meaning their bodies and physical features were very different from ours).

Neanderthals displayed a unique combination of features not found in other hominins, including:

  • an extraordinarily long face
  • a pronounced midface projection
  • a poorly developed chin
  • a highly developed brow ridge
  • large, round eye sockets
  • an extremely long nose
  • larger, cavernous sinuses
  • larger front teeth
  • a retromolar gap
  • a rounded bump at the back of the head (occipital bun)
  • a flat-front brain that bulged in the back and sides
  • a flatter skull bone
  • an elongated opening at the base of the skull (foramen magnum)
  • a higher voice box (larynx)
  • thicker bones
  • shorter limbs with a barrel chest

If you were to encounter a Neanderthal, you’d immediately notice these distinctive features. Their appearance would be both familiar and alien to your eyes.

Some scientists once thought that the differences between Neanderthals and modern humans weren’t significant. That is, they believed that Neanderthals’ unique traits came from their environment and way of life, not their genetics.

For example, Neanderthals lived in cold climates and their stocky bodies helped them stay warm. This would be comparable to how people like the Inuits, who live in cold regions today, have similar body shapes.

However, later discoveries like a Neanderthal infant skeleton found in Israel have shown that these differences were present from birth, meaning they were genetic, not just environmental.

Developmental Differences

Studies of Neanderthal dental and skull anatomy across different age groups—infants, children, and young adults—reveal that they underwent a more rapid craniofacial development along a different trajectory than modern humans.

In comparison, humans have the longest developmental period of any known species. We develop slower due to the complexity of our brains and social behaviors (good things are worth the wait).

While some researchers claim that Neanderthals and early modern humans shared behavioral similarities, it’s important to know that these claims are disputed. Archaeologists and RTB scientists reject the assumptions that Neanderthals had developed language, created art, used jewelry, mastered fire, performed ritual burials, cared for their sick/injured, or used medicinal plants.

It’s hard to tell how Neanderthals thought and behaved. Still, when you look at the archaeological record, there are substantial differences between Neanderthals and modern humans.

Neanderthal vs. Modern Human Technology

Neanderthals were on Earth much longer than humans have been to date, yet their “technology” remained static. They managed to make stone flakes, scrapers, and points, but that’s all.

Human technology, on the other hand, started primitively but quickly became more complex and diverse. Archaeological records show that Homo sapiens spread weaponry, jewelry, and art around the world at a rapid-fire rate.

Just picture two parallel timelines: one for Neanderthals, static and unchanging, and another for humans, exploding with innovation and creativity. While a Neanderthal might spend its entire life using the same stone tools their ancestors did, a human of the same era could be crafting intricate jewelry or painting vivid scenes on cave walls.

So, while Neanderthals had amazing abilities, they couldn’t learn or innovate like we can.

As cognitive neurobiologist Johan J. Bolhuis and his colleagues stated well:

Our species was born in a technologically archaic context, and significantly, the tempo of change only began picking up after the point at which symbolic objects appeared. Evidently, a new potential for symbolic thought was born with our anatomically distinctive species, but it was only expressed after a necessary cultural stimulus had exerted itself. This stimulus was most plausibly the appearance of language. . . . Then, within a remarkably short space of time, art was invented, cities were born, and people had reached the moon.

Brain and Skull Differences

The shape of the human skull is unusual and distinct from all hominins. Our skulls are rounder, with large areas in the brain (the parietal lobe) for things like touch, spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and balance.

Neanderthal skulls are more stretched out from front to back (anterior-posterior) and don’t have as much brain capacity as humans do.

In terms of our brains, the main difference between human and Neanderthal brains is the size and shape of the cerebellum. This is the part of the brain that helps with movement, thinking, language, memory, and social abilities.

In humans, the cerebellum is larger and sticks out more toward the center of the brain. In Neanderthals, the right side of the cerebellum was much smaller than the left, a condition called volumetric laterality, which doesn’t appear in human brains.

Because of these differences, researchers believe humans were more advanced in thinking and social skills than Neanderthals.

The smaller size of the cerebellum and parietal lobe in Neanderthals likely limited their visual thinking, memory, ability to process language, and ability to understand themselves in relation to the world around them.

Facial Structure Differences

Humans have smaller, flatter faces, while Neanderthals had larger, protruding facial features. These differences in skull and face shape also affect the size and shape of different brain areas in each species.

Genetic Differences

Even though human DNA and Neanderthal DNA are highly similar, there are some important differences, including the way some human and Neanderthal genes are used (called gene expression):

  • Some genes that play a role in cognitive development differ in human and Neanderthals that play a role in cognitive development
  • Genes that play a role in cognitive development are also expressed (used differently) in humans and Neanderthals
  • Specific genes that control the development of the voice box (larynx) differ between humans and Neanderthals. These differences suggest that Neanderthals likely couldn’t speak as humans can.
  • Humans have distinct genes that play a role in skull shape, and the design of the rib cage differs in humans and Neanderthals

In other words, your genes tell a story of human exceptionalism. The differences between your DNA and that of Neanderthals reflect the distinct cognitive capacities God designed for each species.
