The desire to live forever is one of the greatest longings of the human heart. Great Christian thinkers and writers—from St. Augustine to Blaise Pascal to C. S. Lewis—have observed that human beings were made to commune personally with the Lord God Almighty. It makes sense, then, that this temporal world and its offerings cannot ultimately satisfy. Thus, according to Christian theology, believers in Jesus Christ will find their future home and fulfillment in the next life, in the eschatological City of God (Revelation 21:1–4).

Yet many people seek fulfillment in alternative religions and in competing worldviews. If the Bible is correct in asserting that all people are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27) and thus created to pursue meaning, purpose, and destiny, then, naturally, we should see evidence of that longing reflected even in other faiths and worldviews. And, true to form, virtually all the world’s religions and sects have an eschatological (end times) dimension to provide some sense of destiny for human beings.

Secular naturalism appears to be the exception to the rule. It postulates that humans are purely physical and mortal creatures. Thus, physical death is the full and final end of a person’s life and existence. Collectively speaking, like all other purely physical creatures on planet Earth, humankind’s destiny is set and will end when the species goes extinct. But this pessimistic— even hopeless—eschatological perspective is being replaced by an optimistic technological vision of the future called transhumanism.

The Emergence of Transhumanism

The website transhumanism.org outlines a description of the human future based on an optimistic view of human potential and technology:

Over the past few years, a new paradigm for thinking about humankind’s future has begun to take shape among some leading computer scientists, neuroscientists, nanotechnologists and researchers at the forefront of technological development. The new paradigm rejects a crucial assumption that is implicit in both traditional futurology and practically all of today’s political thinking. This is the assumption that the ‘human condition’ is at root a constant.

Reflecting what might be the extreme within secular futuristic perspectives, the transhumanists are characterized by

  • Great confidence in human reason and in the ability of science to enhance the positive qualities of human beings and to improve their lives;
  • An extreme optimism that emerging technologies will expand human thought and consciousness and will ultimately end aging and significantly enhance the length of the human lifespan (possibly even eliminate death); and
  • A naturalistic, atheistic, humanistic worldview that places human beings at the moral center of the cosmos.

Transhumanism, like all other forms of secular humanism before it, faces obstacles that cannot be overcome. Their naturalistic worldview fails to ground reason and objective morality and it definitely cannot change the sinful condition of the human heart. Even with the noble advancements in science and technology, the transhumanists have a view of the future that reflects science fiction, not reasoned and reflective expectation. Utopian technological predictions have a habit of overpromising and under producing. And, try as they like, the transhumanists will not cure death.

Yet their clear longing to live forever is a powerful indicator that all human beings require an eschatological destiny. For as St. Augustine wrote in Confessions some sixteen centuries ago,

Man is one of your creatures, Lord, and his instinct is to praise you….The thought of you stirs him so deeply that he cannot be content unless he praises you, because you made us for yourself and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you.1

When examining the archaeological record, it reveals that tools used by the first humans weren’t just practical innovations. They were expressions of something deeper, something that sets us apart from every other creature on Earth.

While the phrase “evolution of tools” often gets used to support evolutionary theory, we’d like to offer you a different perspective. The story of prehistoric tools actually points to evidence of God’s special creation of humanity, revealing our spiritual nature as beings made in his image.

The journey from simple stone tools to modern technology isn’t just about increasing complexity. It’s about the emergence of symbolic thinking, creative expression, and spiritual awareness that appeared suddenly and dramatically with true humans.

This perspective aligns perfectly with the biblical account of Adam and Eve, showing how science and Scripture work together to tell the same remarkable story.

We All Use Tools

The use of all tools shows the ability to plan ahead and solve problems. This remarkable trait appears in both animals and humans, though in very different ways. God created both animals and humans with this ability, but humans were given a far greater capacity to create, innovate, and express purpose through tools.

  • Sea otters use flat rocks to crack open clams and shellfish, turning over on their backs in the water to use their bellies as anvils.

  • Crows craft hooks from twigs to fish out insects, showing remarkable problem-solving abilities.

  • Capuchin monkeys select specific stones to crack open nuts, choosing the right tool for the job.

Animals create and use tools at a basic level.

The use of tools is actually widespread in the animal kingdom:

  • Sea otters use flat rocks to crack open clams and shellfish, turning over on their backs in the water to use their bellies as anvils.
  • Dolphins use sea sponges to protect their snouts during foraging, carefully selecting the right size and shape for their needs.
  • Crows craft hooks from twigs to fish out insects, showing remarkable problem-solving abilities.
  • Octopuses carry coconut shells as armor, demonstrating forward planning.
  • Herons use various items as bait to catch fish, showing they understand cause and effect.
  • Elephants use branches to swat flies away, modifying natural materials for their needs.
  • Capuchin monkeys select specific stones to crack open nuts, choosing the right tool for the job.

This use of tools among animals drives home an important point. Tool use isn’t a defining feature of God’s image. In fact, the tool used by chimpanzees is comparable to the tool use of some hominins like Homo habilis and Homo erectus.

Humans create and use tools at a complex level. We’ve developed spears, hammers, crossbows, tractors, telescopes, computers, and countless other innovations. But what truly sets human tools apart isn’t just their complexity.

While some animals show cleverness, only humans show advancement. We refine and innovate tools generation after generation. The same stagnation we observe in animal tool use also appears in the hominin record. Neanderthals were on Earth longer than modern humans have been, but their technology remained essentially unchanged.

Our technology has exploded from primitive to sophisticated in a remarkably short time. There must be something to explain this difference. We believe it’s the image of God reflected in our symbolic capacity.

When Did Humans Start Using Tools?

Before we answer this question, we need to define our terms carefully. In scientific circles, the word “human” can mean different things depending on what you believe about our origins.

In this article, the word “human” is used with precision. We don’t use it to describe every primate creature with upright posture or a large brain. Instead, “human” is reserved for the descendants of Adam and Eve. These are beings who aren’t just biologically advanced but also spiritual image-bearers of God.

Some scientists refer to extinct hominins like Homo habilis or Neanderthals as “early humans,” but we see those beings as merely animal primates. They were biologically impressive animals, but not truly human in a theological or spiritual sense.

Humans are us, the descendants of the first two humans, Adam and Eve. We’re spiritual beings uniquely created in the image of God and distinct from all other creatures. Though biologically classified as Homo sapiens, humans aren’t the result of evolutionary processes, and we’re much more than our biology.

We’re a distinct creation, specially made with inherent dignity, value, and purpose. Some refer to us as “modern humans” to suggest we evolved from earlier species, but humans didn’t evolve from animals. We were created with spiritual capacity and moral responsibility from the beginning. Our unique identity shows up clearly in the archaeological record.

Hominins are a group of extinct primate species like australopithecines, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and others that appear in the fossil record. They share some physical similarities with humans, but hominins are nonhuman creatures.

They were biologically advanced animals created by God but were not spiritual beings made in his image. While they may have used crude tools or displayed limited intelligence, they’re not considered part of the human lineage in a theological or spiritual sense.

Neanderthals represent a specific type of hominin, created by God with impressive cognitive and physical capabilities, but still not fully human. Neanderthals were intelligent creatures capable of tool use, limited culture, and maybe even some crude symbolic behaviors. But they ultimately lacked the image of God.

They were still alive when Adam and Eve were created but went extinct shortly afterward. Neanderthals weren’t our ancestors, though some interbreeding with humans may have occurred on a biological level.

Now we can answer the question properly. From the time of their creation around 130,000 years ago, humans (Homo sapiens) have used tools. But unlike the simple tools of earlier hominins, human tools show creativity and symbolic purpose.

The archaeological record shows an explosion of innovation when the first true humans appear. Sophisticated hunting weapons, finely crafted blades, sewing needles, musical instruments, and even tools used to create art all appear suddenly. This sudden cultural advancement reflects far more than survival. It reveals a spiritual capacity for beauty, planning, and symbolic thought.

Human tool innovation appears abruptly and fully formed, consistent with the view that humans were specially created with intelligence, purpose, and the image of God. Before the appearance of humans, hominins created only crude tools. Even though they lived on Earth four times longer than humans have so far, their tool use remained unchanged and stagnant, showing no signs of advancement or innovation over time.

The hominin tool timeline tells this story clearly. Hominins began using tools perhaps as early as 3.4 million years ago. No stone tools have been discovered with australopithecines, but animal bones show signs of butchery. The australopithecines most likely used tools made from sticks, similar to what chimpanzees use today.

The habilines, such as Homo habilis, are traditionally considered the first makers of stone tools. These tools appear in the archaeological record about 2.6 million years ago and are known as Oldowan technology. (In archeology, “technology” simply means how tools were made and used—not to be confused with modern machines or electronics.)

These were flakes produced from a rock (called the core stone) that was hit with another rock (called the hammerstone). There’s some evidence that Homo habilis also used bones to make tools, in addition to stones.

Oldowan technology remained unchanged for nearly 800,000 years before it was replaced by a new technology associated with Homo erectus, called Acheulean technology. Acheulean tool making appeared around 1.76 million years ago and lasted until about 300,000 years ago when the erectines disappeared from the fossil record.

The tools of this era tend to be more symmetric and standardized. These hominins produced a range of different tool types including hand axes (teardrop-shaped tools), cleavers (large tools with broad, straight cutting edges), picks (used for digging or processing tough materials), and flakes (produced as byproducts that were deliberately used as smaller tools).

Mousterian technology is associated with Neanderthals. It appeared around 300,000 years ago until about 28,000 years ago. Mousterian technology was more sophisticated than Acheulean technology. Mousterian tools were prepared using a distinct method called the Levallois technique, which could be used to prepare a variety of tools from chipped flakes.

Crude Tools: What They Are and Why They Matter

Understanding crude or simple tools helps us see the dramatic difference between hominin and human capabilities. Crude tools represent basic functionality without refinement or symbolic meaning.

  • Flakes and cores were small, sharp stone flakes chipped off a larger rock (core) and used for cutting meat or plants. These weren’t shaped or refined, just the result of a few strikes with another rock. 
  • Choppers were rounded stones with one sharpened edge, used for smashing bones, cracking nuts, or chopping vegetation.
  • Hand Axes were teardrop-shaped rocks with minimal symmetry, used for cutting or scraping. While slightly more advanced than flakes, early versions still lacked fine craftsmanship.
  • Hammerstones were basic stones used to strike other materials, usually to create flakes or crack open bones. No handles or shaping were involved. 
  • Digging sticks used by some hominins were simple wooden sticks used for foraging roots or insects. They weren’t carved or crafted, just selected and used.

What makes these tools “crude”?

What makes these tools “crude” is the lack of complex planning or standardization. They show minimal shaping, just a few strikes to get a rough edge. There are no handles or composite materials, no symbolic decoration or specialized functions.

We can tell the difference between genuine early human tools and Neanderthal tools in several ways. As previously mentioned, Neanderthals produced a distinct set of tools called Mousterian technology. Neanderthal tools were larger and more robust, formed using the Levallois technique.

Modern humans produced tools using a technique that involved chipping away smaller flakes with much greater precision. Modern human tools showed much greater variety than Neanderthal tools and were much more standardized.

One big difference relates to technological advancement. The tools made by Neanderthals were static. They didn’t change over the entire duration that Neanderthals were on Earth. The tools made by modern humans showed technological advancements, from primitive tools of the Upper Paleolithic to the sophisticated high-tech tools we use today. We also see clear, undisputed evidence of symbolism associated with modern human artifacts.

How Did Humans Drive the Evolution of Tools?

After Adam and Eve were created 130,000 years ago, we begin to see a sudden “explosion” of human culture. Art, language, music, and religious expression all appear together. Each of these points to a unique human ability to think symbolically, express deep meaning, and reflect spiritual awareness. No other creature possesses this ability, only humans.

This ability to use symbolism as creative and spiritual beings also sparked an unprecedented leap in tool innovation. It transformed the way humans designed and used tools.

What are some examples of symbolic behavior?

  • Cave art provides powerful examples of symbolic behavior. Prehistoric tools were essential for creating these masterpieces. Stone scrapers prepared surfaces, hollow bones served as tubes for blowing pigment, and mineral-based tools created paints. Prehistoric tools made the artistic expression possible, but the art itself reveals symbolic thinking that goes far beyond survival needs.
  • Burial practices show another dimension of symbolic tool use. Early human tools found in graves were often finely crafted and placed with personal ornaments or red ochre. These items were positioned with care, not just for utility, but to signify honor or belief in an afterlife. This behavior isn’t seen in animals. These tools demonstrate both symbolic intent and a leap in design complexity.
  • Jewelry required specialized tools used by early humans for shaping, drilling, and threading. Shell beads and engraved pendants show a shift from basic tool use to refined craftsmanship with symbolic meaning tied to identity or status. The precision required reveals advanced planning and abstract thinking.
  • Musical instruments provide perhaps the clearest evidence of symbolic capacity. Ancient flutes made from bird bones and ivory were carved with precision tools, showing a high degree of planning, creativity, and abstract thinking. The tools used by early humans to make instruments were as carefully designed as the instruments themselves. This provides further evidence of symbolic and spiritual expression.

The presence of symbolism in the archaeological record aligns perfectly with the sudden appearance of humans. This symbolic capacity isn’t found in earlier hominins or animals. Evolutionary biologists still can’t explain the origin of language, which represents the pinnacle of our symbolic capacity.

Human tool innovation didn’t just evolve—it erupted alongside spiritual and symbolic awareness, revealing a mind uniquely made in the image of God.

What Makes Human Tools Unique?

Several key characteristics distinguish human tools from those made by animals or hominins, revealing our special nature as image-bearers of God.

  • Humans build on what came before. Unlike animals, humans don’t just make tools, we improve them over time. We’ve gone from sharp rocks to robots and rockets by learning from past generations. This cumulative improvement shows up nowhere else in the natural world.
  • Humans plan ahead in remarkable ways. Human tools aren’t just made in the moment. We design them with specific purposes in mind, whether for farming, building, making music, or solving problems we anticipate in the future. This forward-thinking capacity reflects our ability to mentally travel through time.
  • Humans use tools in the stone age and beyond for more than survival. Animals use tools mostly to get food. Humans do that too, often in much more complex ways, but we also use tools for art, worship, communication, and exploring the world. These uses show deeper meaning and imagination that transcends basic survival needs.
  • Humans teach each other in sophisticated ways. Toolmaking isn’t instinctual or just copied through observation. It’s actively taught. Parents and teachers pass down knowledge so others can learn and improve upon it. This means our knowledge grows as a community, creating an ever-expanding base of technological capability.
  • Some tools have deep meaning beyond their practical function. We use tools to express who we are or what we believe. Musical instruments and religious objects aren’t just helpful, they’re meaningful. A handmade cross, a paintbrush, or even a flag can carry deep symbolic value. These tools connect us to beauty, purpose, and something bigger than ourselves.
  • This transformation started suddenly, according to the archaeological record. The leap in toolmaking didn’t happen slowly or gradually. When humans showed up, advanced tools appeared rapidly alongside art, music, and religious expression. It all points to something more than intelligence. It reveals our spiritual nature and the image of God.

This pattern continues today. While animal tool use remains essentially unchanged, human technology continues advancing at an accelerating pace. From prehistoric tools to smartphones and space shuttles, we see continuous innovation driven by our unique capacity for symbolic thought, creativity, and spiritual awareness.

The use of tools by early humans established patterns we still follow today. We create tools not just for survival, but for beauty, meaning, and connection with the divine. This reflects our fundamental nature as beings created in God’s image, designed for relationship with our Creator and dominion over the natural world.


Conclusion

The story of the evolution of tools reveals something remarkable about human nature. While Neanderthals may have made markings on cave walls and buried their dead, intentional activity doesn’t automatically carry meaning.

A dog may intentionally bury a bone, but it’s not creating a memorial or making a symbolic statement. It’s simply acting on instinct. The act is deliberate, but it doesn’t carry deeper meaning.

Human tools tell a different story entirely. They’re not just more advanced than animal tools, they’re meaningful. They show we’re more than clever animals. We’re creative, intentional, and spiritual beings designed to reflect the image of our Creator.

The archaeological record supports this view beautifully. Stone tools made by hominins remained essentially unchanged for hundreds of thousands of years. But when humans appeared, tool technology exploded with innovation, artistry, and symbolic meaning. This wasn’t gradual evolution, it was a sudden emergence of capabilities that reflect our spiritual nature.

From prehistoric tools to modern technology, we see consistent patterns of innovation, meaning, and spiritual expression that set humans apart from all other creatures. This supports the biblical account of special creation rather than gradual evolution from animal ancestors.

As we explained earlier, Neanderthal tools were larger and remained static for hundreds of thousands of years, whereas human tools were more intricate and continued to advance over time. Another distinction is we see clear, undisputed evidence of symbolism associated with human artifacts. Such evidence is absent from Neanderthal tool collections.

A careful reading of Scripture leaves no room for human evolution. Genesis 2 indicates that humans were directly and personally made by God in his image (Genesis 1:26–27). From the point of our creation, we haven’t evolved, apart from minor microevolutionary changes that don’t affect our fundamental nature or capabilities.

Our intelligence comes from an interplay of brain structures designed to support human intelligence and our immaterial nature (mind, soul, spirit). It’s endowed to us by our Creator’s handiwork, not developed through evolutionary processes over millions of years.

Tools used by early humans have allowed humans to thrive in diverse locations around the world, including regions with harsh climates and challenging conditions. Tools have enabled human civilization, transforming humans from hunter-gatherers to builders of complex societies. While our tool usage has evolved through cultural development, our fundamental biology and intelligence haven’t changed since creation.

The fact that we make tools that don’t contribute directly to our survival provides evidence of the image of God. Humans spend enormous amounts of time, effort, and resources creating symbolic artifacts. This time could theoretically be better spent hunting, gathering food, or producing clothing and shelter materials.

In fact, evolutionary biologists struggle to explain our desire to create art and music because our aesthetic sense doesn’t contribute to survival in any obvious way.

This drive to create meaningful, beautiful, and symbolic tools reflects our spiritual nature. We’re not just biological creatures focused on survival and reproduction, we’re spiritual beings designed for creativity, beauty, worship, and relationship with our Creator.

The evolution of tools from simple survival implements to complex artistic and symbolic objects reveals this fundamental aspect of human nature that sets us apart from all other creatures.

The Age of AI and Ethics

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work, live, and connect, from the algorithms that recommend what show to watch next on your favorite streaming platform to systems that help doctors diagnose diseases.

But just what is AI?

At its core, AI is the ability of machines to simulate thought processes—to think like a human. These systems analyze data, recognize patterns, and make decisions in ways that once seemed impossible for a machine.

Impressive, yes. But AI is also profoundly influential.

It raises questions not just about what it can do but also what it should do. And that’s where the conversation shifts from technology to morality.

What Is Ethics?

Ethics might seem like a big, philosophical word, but at its heart, it’s simply the study of moral right and wrong.

Ethics gives us a framework for deciding how to live, work, and interact with one another. It asks questions like: What’s the right thing to do in a given situation? How do we balance our needs with the needs of others?

Ethics isn’t just about avoiding harm; it’s about pursuing good.

Ethics take on an even more profound significance when applied to something as transformative as AI. 

Expanding beyond personal decisions, ideas abound about how these powerful systems influence societies, communities, and individuals.

What Are Christian Ethics?

Christian ethics aren’t just a list of dos and don’ts scribbled in the margins of our lives; they reflect God’s unchanging character and his design for how we’re meant to live.

Grounded in Scripture, Christian ethics remind us that every decision, no matter how small, is an opportunity to demonstrate our faith and show the world who God is.

When Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount, he wasn’t merely giving a moral checklist; he was inviting us into a life that reflects the heart of God.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Matthew 5:7–8). These aren’t just aspirations—they’re blueprints for how we’re called to live, transforming our ethics into a living testimony of God’s grace. Christian ethics call us to pursue righteousness, to love our neighbor as ourselves, and to shine his light in a dark world. We are to develop godly virtues with the help and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Thus, we cannot be fully moral on our own power. We were designed to partner with God to live moral and upright lives.

Christian ethics urge us to move beyond the superficial and step into a kingdom perspective. They remind us that every breakthrough, every advancement, and every opportunity is a chance to echo the words of Jesus: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

Whether we’re innovating, creating, or leading, our mission is clear: to let God’s love and truth shape how we engage with the world, leaving it brighter and better for his glory.

What Is AI Ethics?

AI ethics is the application of moral principles to the creation and use of AI systems. It’s a conversation about ensuring fairness, accountability, and transparency in these systems’ operations.

Where Did Humans Begin?

The question of human origins has intrigued scientists and historians alike for centuries and has driven considerable research and investigation. Current scientific agreement holds that humans emerged near East Africa, in an area referred to as the cradle of humanity.

The East African Origin

East Africa is widely recognized and supported as the birthplace of humankind due to the wealth of fossil discoveries there that trace human existence back thousands of years. Key sites in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania have provided some of the oldest known humanlike fossils, supporting the scientific theory that modern humans (Homo sapiens) began in this region between 150,000 to 200,000 years ago.

For those interested in diving deeper into the origins of humanity, the book Who Was Adam? offers a comprehensive examination of the scientific and theological perspectives on human beginnings as well as the genetic and fossil evidence that contributes to the belief in humanity’s East African roots.

Genetic Evidence

Advancements in genetics have further reinforced the East African origin theory. Studies of mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome data trace the lineage of all modern humans back to a common ancestor in Africa, often referred to as “Mitochondrial Eve” and “Y-chromosomal Adam”—a throwback to the Bible.

These genetic markers are used as pivotal evidence for piecing together the human family tree and tracing our dispersal across the globe.

The Global Journey

From African origins, humans migrated out of this cradle and eventually populated every corner of the world. This exodus is believed to have occurred in multiple waves, with early humans developing distinct cultures along the way.

Who Was the First Human Being?

The first human beings appeared in Africa, as supported by extensive genetic and archaeological evidence, but science has yet to determine the origin site of the very first human.

While the Bible doesn’t mention a specific location for humanity’s beginnings, it emphasizes that the first humans were Adam and Eve. They and all humans have been created in the image of God. Everyone who has ever lived descended from Adam and Eve.

When Did Early Humans Migrate to New Places?

The great human migrations are believed to have begun around 50,000 to 70,000 years ago when early humans began to move out of East Africa and embark on an adventure that would span continents and millennia.

Evidence for the first leg of this migration saw our ancestors travel through the Middle East. From there, they went into Europe and Asia, gradually spreading across these vast landscapes.

The final stages of this epic journey saw humans crossing into the Americas, a monumental feat that marked the culmination of a long and expansive migration process starting from East Africa.

Why Did Early Humans Migrate?

Scientists think the early migrations were not primarily about survival (forced migration) but about voluntary migration. Researchers believe humans embarked on a journey of discovery, change, and expansion that led to the occupation of new lands.

The Scientific Perspective: Environmental Changes

From a scientific perspective, human migrations out of Africa were predominantly driven by cultural challenges, such as disease and significant environmental changes. Africa, at the time, was thought to be marked by severe drought conditions that pushed early humans to seek more fertile land.

This period coincided with the “greening” of the Middle East, where ample resources awaited those bold enough to venture out. This shift provided both an escape from worsening conditions and an opportunity for a better life in new territories.

Geographical conditions were also highly favorable for human migration. Earth was in an ice age, and water levels were lower, which made it possible for humans to travel between regions that today are disconnected by water.

Due to lower sea levels, it was possible to walk across the Persian Gulf, which is where some scholars believe the biblical Garden of Eden was located. The Rub’al Khali, now a desert, was once a humid and cool passageway with rivers and streams that allowed migration from Africa to the Middle East.

The Biblical Perspective: Divine Providence

From a biblical perspective, migration flows are seen as an act of divine providence. According to Scripture, human movement was either “commanded”—in the form of a decree—or “forced” directly by God’s hand.

Initially, at the point of creation and again after the flood, humans were instructed to “multiply and fill the earth.” How can they fill the earth unless they migrate?

Yet, in one account, they resisted, choosing instead to settle and build the Tower of Babel. It was here that God intervened by confounding human language and compelling people to scatter across the globe:

So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth” (Genesis 11:8).

This biblical account aligns with the rapid migrations suggested by scientific evidence. The idea that accessible routes with abundant resources were part of God’s providence offers a profound understanding of how these great migrations were undertaken. Humans moved not just by necessity but also by divine design.

A Combination of Forces

The migration of the human species was influenced by multiple environmental and spiritual pressures. The challenges our ancestors faced were lessened by how accessible routes and resources were, which suggests a remarkable synergy between natural and supernatural forces.

Scientific Evidence for Early Human Migration

It’s fascinating to consider how scientific evidence can complement and support the biblical perspective of both human creation and migration.

The RTB Model: A Biblical Perspective

The Reasons to Believe (RTB) model provides a framework that aligns with biblical narratives and is supported by scientific data. This model suggests that after God’s intervention at the Tower of Babel, humans began to scatter across the globe.

This scattering was not just spiritual—it also entailed a physical journey. God’s scattering required them to move. RTB’s model holds that migration started in the Middle East, occurred rapidly, and spread outward from this region.

Rapid Migration and Coastal Superhighways

One of the striking aspects of the migration was its rapidity, which is backed by evidence. The coastal routes, often referred to as “coastal superhighways” provided the passageways for these migrations.

Coastal highways played a significant role in speeding up migrations. These routes were stable environments that removed the need for complex clothing or new tools. Coastal highways also provided reliable food sources from the sea and fresh water from rivers leading into the coasts.

The journey to distant lands, such as Australia, points to how quickly early humans could adapt and move across vast distances.

For example, anthropologists estimate that the migration to Australia could have been completed in less than 1,000 years if groups moved at an average pace of just over 10 miles per year. In the grand scheme, this amount of time and distance per year is not excessive and could be easily accomplished.

Archaeological and Fossil Evidence

Archaeological and fossil discoveries reveal important insights into the migration patterns of early humans. Fossilized remains and artifacts found in regions like East Africa, the Middle East, and Asia trace the journey of Homo sapiens as they spread across the globe. Key sites such as Jebel Faya in the United Arab Emirates and the Levant (today’s Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria) have evidence of human presence dating back over 100,000 years—supporting the idea of early migrations through these regions.

The coastal superhighways are believed to have played a significant role in human dispersal. While much of the evidence along these routes has been lost to rising sea levels, inland archaeological sites provide a glimpse into the lives of early humans who followed rivers away from the coasts. Tools, skeletal remains, and other artifacts found along river systems like the Tigris-Euphrates and the Indus River further show how early humans adapted to the different environments during their migrations.

Genetic Evidence: Mitochondrial and Y-Chromosomal DNA

Science further supports RTB’s model through genetic evidence. Both mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosomal DNA research support the idea of human migration starting from a common point. These genetic markers trace the lineage and movement of human populations and highlight a pattern that aligns with the RTB model.

Genetic data not only reinforces the idea of a rapid spread but also illustrates the interconnectedness of human populations—that we are all one people—as they migrated and settled across different continents.

Great Human Migrations: Europe

Genetic markers in European populations show that their origins can be linked back to East African (Ethiopian) groups, especially those close to the Middle East.

Mitochondrial DNA studies show the genetic traits of people living outside Africa have subparts of African mitochondrial DNA sequences, called haplotypes. Two important haplotypes, known as M and N, have been key to understanding these migrations. M haplotypes are usually found in Asia, while N haplotypes are mainly seen in western Asia and Europe.

The Route Through Central Asia

The journey from the Middle East to Europe wasn’t a straight path. Instead, it took a winding route through central Asia. Y-chromosomal data helps create a more detailed map. Two dominant Y-chromosome haplotypes in Europe, M173 and M17, seem to come from the M45 type—common in central Asian populations—and traces back to the M89 type found in the Middle East.

Studies place the origin of M173 about 30,000 years ago, and it serves as a significant milestone in the migration timeline.

The third prominent Y-chromosomal haplotype in Europe is known as M172 and it emerged about 10,000 years ago. It also came from M89 and likely represents human migrations due to the rise of agriculture as it changed the culture and economy of Europe.

Great Human Migrations: Asia

Genetic markers from Asian populations reveal a deep connection to East African origins. This African link is foundational, as all genetic markers found among Asian groups trace back to these early populations.

Mitochondrial DNA variants, haplotypes C, D, E, and G, are strong among groups with historical ties to South and East Asia, and even the Americas. They all descend from the M haplotype variant rooted in East African populations. Studies estimate that the M haplotype originated between 25,000 and 80,000 years ago.

Y-chromosome data matches these findings closely. Prominent Y-chromosome haplotypes in East Asia, notably C and D, can be traced back to M168, which also originated in East Africa and provides more evidence for migration from a common ancestor.

Studies estimate that M168 appeared between 31,000 and 79,000 years ago, with other estimates ranging from 56,000 to 81,000 and 36,000 to 109,000 years ago.

The Journey Through Asia

Early human migration routes into Asia appeared to have followed along the southern coast (including what is now India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) before turning northward. This path provided temperate climates, abundant resources, and steady expansion into new lands. Some groups are thought to have continued the coastal migration into Indonesia and Australia.

Great Human Migrations: Australia

The Y-chromosomal DNA from indigenous Australian populations reveals a significant genetic connection to African ancestors. This genetic link is shared among various Asian and Oceanic groups, connecting the paths taken by our ancestors.

One unique Y-chromosomal variant, known as haplotype M130, is particularly telling. It occurs with remarkable frequency among aboriginal Australians—over 60 percent—and is also found in populations from New Guinea, Malaysia, and India, although at lower frequencies.

This haplotype doesn’t appear in any other global populations and can also be traced back to the M168 haplotype from East Africa.

Crossing the Waters to Sahul

During the last ice age, the landmass known as Sahul—made up of modern-day Australia, New Guinea, and Tasmania—was separated from Asia by a strait over 50 miles wide, even with the lower sea levels.

To reach Sahul, early humans had to have the knowledge and skill to build and navigate seaworthy vessels. This requirement for sea travel suggests they had advanced cognitive abilities and technological understanding.

Anthropologists propose that the first Australians embarked on numerous voyages and hopped from island to island to complete their journey.

The First Human Migration to America

Scientists generally agree that the initial settlers of the Americas came from Asia and likely crossed the Bering Strait on a land bridge that once connected the two continents. This crossing was a significant milestone in human migration, yet the exact timing and route of these migrations remain the subject of ongoing debate.

The fossil record provides some clues. The oldest human remains in the Americas date between 13,500 and 9,500 years ago. However, these findings do not necessarily point to a single mass migration event. Instead, many scholars believe settling the Americas involved multiple migratory waves, possibly from both northeast and southern Asia.

The Clovis Culture and Beyond

The Clovis culture, a people group identified by unique stone tools, is often considered the earliest well-documented human presence in North America. This culture suggests a rapid spread of humans across the continent. Around 12,000 years ago, other groups like the Folsom culture began to emerge and show a diverse and complex pattern of settlement.

Some researchers think the Clovis people were among the first to reach North America, while others believe there were people before them. Limited and incomplete evidence from early humans in the Americas drives this debate and makes it difficult to clearly understand the early migration patterns.

Genetic Insights into Native American Origins

Native American groups have lower genetic diversity than other populations, which suggests they went through a genetic bottleneck from a small founding group. Five key mitochondrial DNA haplotypes (A, B, C, D, and X) help us trace their ancestry. Most of these haplotypes link back to Siberia and East Asia, but the rare haplotype X, interestingly, points to European roots.

Y-chromosomal DNA studies also add to the understanding and show that haplotypes unique to Native Americans trace back to Siberian ancestors. This genetic evidence supports the theory that multiple waves of migration into the Americas occurred around 12,000 to 15,000 years ago.

Debating Migration Routes

The routes taken by the first American migrants remain debated. Traditionally, it was believed that people traveled through an ice-free corridor between the massive ice sheets covering Canada and Alaska. However, this theory is challenged by the idea that migrants could have followed the Pacific coastline as this route might explain the rapid settlement of South America.

The Homo sapiens  migration story is a blend of genetic discoveries and archaeological findings that show how early humans ventured into new territories, adapted environmentally, and interacted with other hominid species.

What Does the Bible Say About Human Migration?

As we conclude our exploration of humanity’s historical migration, let’s also consider some spiritual and moral points that may be relevant to us today. The Bible offers several insights we can apply to human migration that emphasize unity, law and borders, and our shared heritage.

Unity and Shared Heritage

Scripture emphasizes that we are all connected—a truth science supports through genetic ancestry. As the saying goes, “We are all Africans under our skin.” This commonality reminds us of our shared lineage and the fundamental unity of humankind. We are all the descendants of immigrants that bear the image of God.

Compassion and Hospitality

The Bible stresses that fellow human beings should treat strangers and migrants with compassion and kindness. Exodus 22:21 says, “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” This passage calls us to remember our own pasts and to treat others with the grace and empathy we would wish for ourselves.

Ephesians 2:11–22 expands on this theme by inviting all people to become part of God’s family. It reminds us that, spiritually speaking, we were all once strangers and aliens until Jesus Christ welcomed us as citizens in his kingdom.

Borders and Laws

While the Bible emphasizes unity and hospitality, it also acknowledges the importance of borders and laws for national protection.

  • Leviticus 24:22 says, “You are to have the same law for the foreigner and the native-born,” meaning the foreigner who resides among you.
  • Nehemiah 4:7–23 stresses the importance of rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls to protect the community and maintain its security. 
  • Romans 13:1–7 discusses the role of authorities and the importance of law and order, which can be seen as a foundation for the concept of national borders and governance.
  • Acts 17:26 says God made all nations and determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.

The challenge is to balance security with compassion. The Bible encourages us to seek wisdom and justice and strive for solutions that honor both our shared humanity and the unique identities of nations.

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably asked, Did humans evolve from monkeys? more than once in your lifetime.

For many of us, it starts in our first biology class, learning about the theory of human evolution or seeing a picture like this:

When it comes to human origins, seeing a progression like this from ape to human can make your curiosity run wild and cause you to ask questions such as . . .

  • Are our common ancestors really apes?
  • If humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys around?
  • Is this why my Uncle Bob’s so incredibly hairy?

Before your imagination goes too far, we need to pause and clearly address two important questions:

1. Did humans evolve from monkeys?

No, humans did not evolve from monkeys, chimpanzees, or any other ape-like creature—past or present.

Humans are the crown of creation. distinct and unique from the animal kingdom in major ways, originating from Adam and Eve. We’ll unpack this along with the science that supports it later on in this post.

2. Do evolutionary biologists believe humans evolved from monkeys?

No, evolutionary biologists do not claim humans evolved directly from monkeys, chimpanzees, or any other modern apes we see today.

If this is confusing to you, it’s probably because popular media has oversimplified what evolutionists believe.

Throughout this post, we’ll answer common questions about “monkey to human” evolution and help you better understand both the evolutionary and creationist positions so you can have meaningful conversations about human origins.

What Do Evolutionary Biologists Actually Believe about Human Evolution?

Evolutionary biologists claim that humans are part of an evolutionary lineage that includes monkeys. Meaning, monkeys did not eventually become humans, but human beings are a part of a family tree that includes monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans.

It’s known as common ancestry, or common descent, within the macroevolutionary model.

Remember high school biology? It’s the branching tree with humans and monkeys as separate branches stemming from a common trunk.

It’s the theory that human evolution could be traced back to an ancestor that’s neither fully human nor fully monkey but rather an ancient primate from around 25 to 30 million years ago.

And, over time, this ancestral population split into completely different lineages, giving rise to the diverse array of primates we see today, including monkeys, great apes, and humans.

This ancestor’s exact identity is unknown and still debated by evolutionary biologists today. We’ll get into this mystery “ancestor” a little later.

If humans evolved from apes, why do apes still exist?

Now that you understand what evolutionary biologists actually claim, the answer to this question should be easier: Shared ancestry does not claim a linear evolution from apes to humans. So, apes would still be around as a branch from a common ancestor along with human beings.

That means, the question you’re actually trying to answer is: Do we indeed share common ancestry with monkeys and other ape-like creatures?

The simple answer, from both a scientific and biblical perspective is, no.

What we find in science, as well as in the Bible, continues to point to God as the divine Creator who made us distinct, unique, and apart from any other creatures.

In other words, a closer look at the scientific data shows that we DID NOT DESCEND from an unknown ape-like creature. Instead, we were uniquely and specially created as our own species—as human beings, as image bearers of God.

Common Design Comes Before Common Descent

Before Darwin, there was Owen . . .

Before we dive a little deeper into the science, let us first introduce you to Sir Richard Owen, one of Britain’s foremost naturalists (student of natural history).

Back in 1849, even before Charles Darwin proposed his theory of evolution, Owen proposed that shared anatomical features among organisms could be understood through the idea of an archetype, an original pattern or model. He saw these shared features as displays of a common blueprint, rather than evidence of common descent. It’s the idea that instead of us sharing a common ancestor that traces humans down to an ape-like creature millions of years ago, these forms can be looked at as evidence of common design.

Unfortunately, Owen’s work has been overshadowed by Darwin’s theory of evolution, but it’s essential for understanding how common design is consistent with science and Scripture.

This framework gives us a great explanation for why we see similarities between humans and other primates in some of the scientific findings today. The Designer who made you and me could have used the same form or design for other animals. Owen’s work makes perfect sense in understanding how a Creator would create humans and animals by using similar designs to make uniquely different creatures!

The Fossil Record & Lucy (Our Human Ancestor?)

Does the fossil record reveal a mysterious common “ancestor”? 

Lucy. Does that name ring a bell? 

The story of Lucy, the famous Australopithecus afarensis (try saying that three times fast), has long been ingrained in our understanding of human evolution. With her discovery decades ago, Lucy became the figure in the evolutionary tree of human ancestry, portrayed in textbooks and sketches as a significant link in our origin story.

But recent discoveries have shaken up this story, bringing a lot of questions about Lucy’s place in Darwin’s tree as a common ancestor. New evidence suggests that the hominid group Australopithecus afarensis (A. afarensis), to which Lucy belongs, may be considered a dead end or a completely different branch in the human evolutionary tree.

This revelation comes from the analysis of a jawbone belonging to A. afarensis, discovered in 2002. Scientists found that the jawbone closely resembles that of a gorilla rather than a human, indicating a separate branch from the human lineage. This is big. The find continues to challenge the idea of an evolutionary connection between Lucy and human beings and of the validity of the evolutionary model.

For evolution to be accepted as fact, there must be a clear evolutionary pathway supported by in-between forms in the fossil record.

However, as science progresses, these proposed transitional forms (like Lucy) seem to vanish, leaving gaps in the evolutionary story of human origins.

What can these gaps mean?

Well, they can really only mean one thing.

God created human beings uniquely in his image, apart and distinct from any other animals.

In staying committed and faithful to what we find in science as well as in Scripture, the gaps can only mean that creatures like Lucy belong in the animal realm, distinct and separate from human beings who bear the image of their Creator.

Small but Mighty Evidence of DNA in Human Origins

But how do we explain how similar we are to chimps? Aren’t we closely related to them at the genetic level?

Yes!

You may have heard that humans and chimps share 95–99% of their DNA, which many people say provides evidence for our evolutionary connection. This is probably the biggest known argument for common ancestry (hence the traction of Darwin’s theory).

But recent studies have thrown a monkey wrench into that idea (pun intended). It seems that humans and chimps are more genetically distinct than we think, and these differences add to the case for common design when thinking about human origins.

There’s a ton of evidence pointing to this distinction. For example, one of the latest findings in genetics revolves around something called alternate gene splicing.

Let’s break it down:

DNA is like a blueprint that contains instructions for building and regulating all the proteins in our bodies. These proteins are the real MVPs of life, carrying out all sorts of essential tasks in our cells.

When it’s time to make a protein, the cell starts by copying the instructions from a gene into a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA). But here’s where things get interesting. Before the mRNA can be used to make a protein, it undergoes a process called splicing. This is where the cell snips out the noncoding bits of the mRNA (called introns) and stitches together the important parts (called exons) to form the final mRNA.

And here’s where we humans and chimps really differ.

Researchers have found that humans and chimps have significant differences in how their mRNA gets spliced. While most of the splicing reactions are pretty similar between the two species, some genes show very distinct splicing patterns in humans compared to chimps. And these differences seem to affect genes involved in all sorts of functions, from brain activity to heart health.

In short, while we might share a lot of DNA with chimps, once we get down to the intricacies of how DNA functions, there are significant differences that make us who we are, different from ape-like creatures.

How Are Humans Unique?

We possess many unique characteristics that set us apart from chimps.

For example . . .

  • Complex Language and Communication: We have a sophisticated system of language that allows for complex communication, including the ability to convey abstract ideas, share knowledge, and express emotions through spoken and written words.
  • Advanced Cognitive Abilities: We exhibit higher cognitive functions such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-awareness. This includes the ability to plan for the future, reflect on the past, and imagine possibilities beyond immediate reality.
  • Culture and Civilization: We create and maintain complex social structures, traditions, and belief systems that form the basis of human culture and civilization. This includes art (this is a big one!), music, literature, religion, and technological innovation.
  • Tool Use and Technology: We’re adept at creating and using tools to manipulate the environment. This includes not only simple tools made from natural materials but also advanced technologies that have shaped the course of human history (you can Google that!).
  • Bipedalism: We’re the only fully bipedal primates—the only ones that walk on two legs.
  • Complex Social Structures: We form intricate social networks and relationships, ranging from small family units to large-scale societies. This includes cooperation, consideration of others, and social hierarchies.
  • Symbolic Thinking and Creativity: We have the ability to think symbolically and imaginatively, allowing for creativity, artistic expression, and abstract thought. This includes the development of language, art, music, and literature.
  • Self-Awareness and Consciousness: We possess a sense of self-awareness and consciousness, allowing us to reflect on our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, as well as to consider the perspectives of others.

Pretty different, right?

These unique characteristics collectively distinguish us from other animals. And it’s what birthed civilization and culture—from the history of time to the moment we’re living in today.

While individual traits may be present in other species to varying degrees, the combination and extent of these traits are incomparable and unique to humans.

From the Very Beginning . . .

Now that we got the science down, let’s see if the Bible can back it up.

There are many Scripture verses we can find that talk about how God set apart humans to be special and unique (that’s a whole other topic called human exceptionalism), but for the sake of this article, we’ll mention one that supports the creation model (common design) we hold to.

In the Bible, Genesis 2:7 describes how God created Adam. It says God made Adam from the dust of the ground. What stands out here is the word “formed.”

In this verse, the word “formed” comes from a Hebrew word “yasar,” which means to shape or make. And in Genesis 2:19, thesame word is used to say how God made all the animals from the ground, too. So, from these verses, we can gather that both humans and animals were made by God from the same stuff. Which makes sense—the fossil record seems to reveal shared DNA similarities as well as shared features.

However, here’s where human uniqueness comes in.

Even though humans and animals were made from the same material, only Adam got the special treatment of having the breath of life breathed into him by God.

We read in Genesis 1:26–27 and 9:6, that only humans were made in the image of God. We have special and unique qualities that reflect God’s image.

So, it seems like the Bible indeed supports and helps explain what we find in science.

It makes sense that there would be some similarities between us and chimps because we were made of the same material, carefully crafted by a Designer. But the gaps we see in the fossil record, as well as the significant differences in the intricacies of our genes explain how we are indeed specially and uniquely made—because the Spirit of God has been breathed into us.

But Can Christians Believe in Human Evolution?

Although the case for common design is what we hold to as the best explanation of what we find in science and Scripture, there are other Christians who believe God could have created human beings through the evolutionary process.

That’s a topic for an in-depth discussion for another time, but the important thing to know is that evolutionary theory has significant scientific challenges.

Here at Reasons to Believe, we believe the testable creation model, or common design, best explains and integrates science and faith in understanding our origin, design, and history of life.

Neanderthals and early humans—how different were they, really?

Imagine walking the earth 50,000 years ago. You may have encountered creatures who looked somewhat like us, but weren’t quite human.

They hunted, gathered, and perhaps even cared for each other in ways similar to our ancestors. Yet, despite those similarities, the differences between Neanderthals and humans were significant.

The distinctions raise intriguing questions about our origins:

  • Were Neanderthals human?
  • What does it mean to be human?
  • Where do Neanderthals fit in the Bible’s story of creation?

Let’s examine what separates us from Neanderthals, why it matters, and how our old-earth creationist perspective differs from evolutionary theories.

What Are Neanderthals?

Neanderthals were a distinct species, created by God, that belonged to a group of creatures called hominins. They lived from about 300,000 to 40,000 years ago in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia before going extinct.

Even though Neanderthals were biologically similar to modern humans (Homo sapiens), they were different from humans in significant ways .

In fact, most biologists who believe in evolution would say Neanderthals are an evolutionary dead end, meaning they did not contribute to human evolution. Even for these scientists, Neanderthal DNA would be distinct from that of the human species.

At Reasons to Believe, our biologists hold that God as creator used similar designs for both humans and Neanderthals, but with key differences that set them apart.

Neanderthals were intelligent, capable of using tools, and they likely formed strong emotional bonds with others. However, they lacked something crucial that makes humans unique: the image of God.

This means that while Neanderthals could think, feel, and even behave in ways that seem humanlike, their cognitive abilities were inferior to those of modern humans.

Unlike you, they didn’t possess the same spiritual and intellectual gifts that come from bearing the image of the creator of the universe.

But you do.

You have the unique capacity for a relationship with God—something Neanderthals were not created to experience.

It’s a great reminder that you are fearfully and wonderfully made—not the product of an unguided evolutionary process.

Similarities Between Neanderthals and Humans

How closely do we resemble our ancient neighbors, the Neanderthals? While Neanderthals and humans share intriguing similarities, these parallels tell a story of design, not descent.

From their unique physical structures to their intriguing behaviors, these similar traits highlight the creativity of a common designer rather than suggesting a shared evolutionary path.

Let’s delve into the remarkable traits we share with Neanderthals and explore what they reveal about our unique origins.

Physical and Functional Similarities

Like us, Neanderthals walked upright on two legs. (They were “obligate bipeds” if you want to sound smart—that’s the fancy way of saying they always walked on two legs, just like we do.)

Brain Size

The average Neanderthal brain size was slightly larger than that of modern humans, but brain size alone doesn’t determine cognitive capacity. (See “Brain and Skull Differences” below.)

Genetic Similarities

Neanderthals shared 99.7% of their genetic material with humans. (To keep this in perspective, humans also share about 60% of our genes with bananas. Shared DNA doesn’t necessarily mean direct ancestry.) Neanderthals had 23 pairs of chromosomes, including evidence of a fused chromosome 2.

Behavior

Some researchers claim Neanderthals were very similar to us in terms of their behavior. But some anthropologists and those of us at Reasons to Believe dispute and reject these behavioral claims based on counterevidence, which we’ll explore in the next section.

Differences Between Neanderthals and Humans

Physical and Functional Differences

Despite overall similarities, Neanderthals and humans have significant morphological differences (meaning their bodies and physical features were very different from ours).

Neanderthals displayed a unique combination of features not found in other hominins, including:

  • an extraordinarily long face
  • a pronounced midface projection
  • a poorly developed chin
  • a highly developed brow ridge
  • large, round eye sockets
  • an extremely long nose
  • larger, cavernous sinuses
  • larger front teeth
  • a retromolar gap
  • a rounded bump at the back of the head (occipital bun)
  • a flat-front brain that bulged in the back and sides
  • a flatter skull bone
  • an elongated opening at the base of the skull (foramen magnum)

If you were to encounter a Neanderthal, you’d immediately notice these distinctive features. Their appearance would be both familiar and alien to your eyes.

Some scientists once thought that the differences between Neanderthals and modern humans weren’t significant. That is, they believed that Neanderthals’ unique traits came from their environment and way of life, not their genetics.

For example, Neanderthals lived in cold climates and their stocky bodies helped them stay warm. This would be comparable to how people like the Inuits, who live in cold regions today, have similar body shapes.

However, later discoveries like a Neanderthal infant skeleton found in Israel have shown that these differences were present from birth, meaning they were genetic, not just environmental.

Developmental Differences

Studies of Neanderthal dental and skull anatomy across different age groups—infants, children, and young adults—reveal that they underwent a more rapid craniofacial development along a different trajectory than modern humans.

In comparison, humans have the longest developmental period of any known species. We develop slower due to the complexity of our brains and social behaviors (good things are worth the wait).

Behavioral Differences from the Archaeological Record

While some researchers claim that Neanderthals and early modern humans shared behavioral similarities, it’s important to know that these claims are disputed. Archaeologists and RTB scientists reject the assumptions that Neanderthals had developed language, created art, used jewelry, mastered fire, performed ritual burials, cared for their sick/injured, or used medicinal plants.

It’s hard to tell how Neanderthals thought and behaved. Still, when you look at the archaeological record, there are substantial differences between Neanderthals and modern humans.

Neanderthal vs. Modern Human Technology

Neanderthals were on Earth much longer than humans have been to date, yet their “technology” remained static. They managed to make stone flakes, scrapers, and points, but that’s all.

Human technology, on the other hand, started primitively but quickly became more complex and diverse. Archaeological records show that Homo sapiens spread weaponry, jewelry, and art around the world at a rapid-fire rate.

Just picture two parallel timelines: one for Neanderthals, static and unchanging, and another for humans, exploding with innovation and creativity. While a Neanderthal might spend its entire life using the same stone tools their ancestors did, a human of the same era could be crafting intricate jewelry or painting vivid scenes on cave walls.

So, while Neanderthals had amazing abilities, they couldn’t learn or innovate like we can.

As cognitive neurobiologist Johan J. Bolhuis and his colleagues stated well:

Our species was born in a technologically archaic context, and significantly, the tempo of change only began picking up after the point at which symbolic objects appeared. Evidently, a new potential for symbolic thought was born with our anatomically distinctive species, but it was only expressed after a necessary cultural stimulus had exerted itself. This stimulus was most plausibly the appearance of language. . . . Then, within a remarkably short space of time, art was invented, cities were born, and people had reached the moon.

Brain and Skull Differences

The shape of the human skull is unusual and distinct from all hominins. Our skulls are rounder, with large areas in the brain (the parietal lobe) for things like touch, spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and balance.

Neanderthal skulls are more stretched out from front to back (anterior-posterior) and don’t have as much brain capacity as humans do.

In terms of our brains, the main difference between human and Neanderthal brains is the size and shape of the cerebellum. This is the part of the brain that helps with movement, thinking, language, memory, and social abilities.

In humans, the cerebellum is larger and sticks out more toward the center of the brain. In Neanderthals, the right side of the cerebellum was much smaller than the left, a condition called volumetric laterality, which doesn’t appear in human brains.

Because of these differences, researchers believe humans were more advanced in thinking and social skills than Neanderthals.

The smaller size of the cerebellum and parietal lobe in Neanderthals likely limited their visual thinking, memory, ability to process language, and ability to understand themselves in relation to the world around them.

Facial Structure Differences

Humans have smaller, flatter faces, while Neanderthals had larger, protruding facial features. These differences in skull and face shape also affect the size and shape of different brain areas in each species.

Genetic Differences

Even though human DNA and Neanderthal DNA are highly similar, there are some important differences, including the way some human and Neanderthal genes are used (called gene expression):

  • Some genes that play a role in cognitive development differ in human and Neanderthals that play a role in cognitive development
  • Genes that play a role in cognitive development are also expressed (used differently) in humans and Neanderthals
  • Specific genes that control the development of the voice box (larynx) differ between humans and Neanderthals. These differences suggest that Neanderthals likely couldn’t speak as humans can.
  • Humans have distinct genes that play a role in skull shape, and the design of the rib cage differs in humans and Neanderthals

In other words, your genes tell a story of human exceptionalism. The differences between your DNA and that of Neanderthals reflect the distinct cognitive capacities God designed for each species.

The primary mission of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST, seen in figure 1) is to investigate the early history of the universe. Of particular interest to researchers is the period known as the “cosmic dawn,” when starlight first illuminated the universe. This aptly named era extends from 0.2 billion to 1.2 billion years after the cosmic origin event.

To observe the cosmic dawn, astronomers must look many billions of light-years away. (Remember: distance means time, due to the finite velocity of light. That is, the farther away we look, the farther back in time we see the condition of the universe. Also keep in mind that due to the expansion of the universe, the most distant objects are moving away from us the most rapidly.) The visible light of objects at distances corresponding to the cosmic dawn era (12.6–13.6 billion light-years away), will be shifted into the infrared segment of the electromagnetic spectrum. For this reason, astronomers designed the JWST to detect infrared radiation. 

Bright Early Galaxies
One of the big surprises for astronomers using the JWST was to observe several bright galaxies in the first billion years of cosmic history—galaxies with ultraviolet luminosities as much as ten times brighter than what standard big bang models would seem to allow.1 Most big bang models had predicted that galaxies as ultraviolet bright as these would take more than a few hundred million years to form. However, this prediction relied on a lack of understanding about how early galaxies formed.

As reported in Today’s New Reason to Believe, posted on January 1, 2024, a team of astronomers has solved the problem of these early ultraviolet bright galaxies.2 The solution came from evidence confirming that star formation was just as “stochastic,” or “bursty,” during the universe’s first billion years as during the subsequent 12.8 billion years.

GN-z11 Galaxy
Even before the launch of the JWST, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) allowed astronomers to observe a cosmic dawn galaxy, GN-z11 (aka GNS-JD2, seen in figure 2). It appeared much brighter than anticipated at visible wavelengths, despite being the most distant galaxy researchers had yet discovered.

A team of eighteen astronomers, using the HST’s grism spectroscopy, measured GN-z11’s redshift to be 11.1.3 This redshift measure implied that GN-z11 is 13.41 billion light-years from Earth, a distance that corresponds with a mere 380 million years after the cosmic origin event. GN-z11 is the most highly redshifted (thus, most distant) galaxy spectroscopically confirmed using the HST.

A team of eight astronomers led by James Baldwin measured the effective diameter of GN-z11. Based on images from the HST CANDELS survey and additional observations,4 they determined the half-light diameter (the distance from the galactic core to the point where its luminosity is reduced by half) of GN-z11 to be about 500 light-years, a determination consistent with later measurements made using the JWST.5 At this relatively small size and high luminosity, GN-z11 was confirmed to be the brightest galaxy yet known at a distance greater than 13.3 billion light-years, in the early part of the cosmic dawn. For this reason, GN-z11 became a prime target for investigation by the JWST.  

In September 2023, a team of sixty-three astronomers led by Andrew Bunker used the near-infrared spectrometer on board the JWST to make a more precise measurement of GN-z11’s redshift,6 which turned out to be 10.603. This measurement tells us that GN-z11 is 13.38 billion light-years from Earth. At this distance, GN-z11 appears to have formed 410 million years after the first moment of cosmic creation. This finding is astounding, given that star formation is not even possible until the universe is at least 200 million years old.

In fact, GN-z11 is not the only exceptionally luminous galaxy found in the cosmic dawn. Images taken by the JWST reveal several dozen others. The discovery of such galaxies has become a regular theme for the JWST, and this theme has spawned numerous articles in the popular media and on the web—many claiming that the big bang model needs major revision and/or that scientists are on the verge of discovering some new physics. 

Why Such Brightness?
While no astronomer whose work appears in peer-reviewed astrophysical literature has called for an abandonment or replacement of big bang models, a few are advocating for “a reexamination of the theoretical landscape of galaxy formation at the cosmic dawn.”7 To determine whether a reexamination is necessary, a team of thirty-six astronomers led by Cambridge University’s Roberto Maiolino undertook a detailed probe of GN-z11. 

Using both the near-infrared spectrometer (NIRSpec) and the near-infrared camera (NIRCam) on board the JWST,8Maiolino’s team discovered a huge clump of gas in the galactic halo, about 7,800 light-years from the GN-z11 core. The camera revealed that this clump was so powerfully illuminated by stars in the core that its gas had been ionized. The spectrometer additionally revealed the elemental composition of the clump: hydrogen and helium, and no elements heavier than helium.

The lack of any elements heavier than helium in the gas clump provided, for the first time, direct evidence that aligned with a major prediction of big bang models. According to these models, the universe begins infinitesimally small, nearly infinitely hot, and with just one element—hydrogen. Between three and four minutes after the cosmic beginning, the expanding and cooling universe passes through the temperature window at which hydrogen fuses into helium. About a quarter of the primordial hydrogen (by mass) becomes fused into helium, along with a trace amount of lithium. All other elements are manufactured later in the nuclear furnaces of future stars. Maiolino’s team was the first ever to see a gas cloud that contained only the elements produced in the initial “bang.”

To explain the level of ionization observed in the gas clump, Maiolino and his colleagues calculated that the combined luminosity of the stars illuminating the gas clump was equivalent to at least 20 trillion times our Sun’s luminosity. This high luminosity can be explained only if the stars in GN-z11’s central region are extremely massive. Based on the spectra of the gas clump, the team was able to determine that the ionizing radiation came from stars in GN-z11’s central region but not from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the core. 

In the context of big bang modeling, astronomers have developed a range of predictions for the mass of the universe’s first stars—stars that begin their nuclear burning with 75% hydrogen, 25% helium, and a trace amount of lithium.9 These estimates range from 1–100 solar masses, 1–500 solar masses, and 50–500 solar masses, with the slight possibility that some of these first stars could be as massive as 1,000 solar masses.

The gas clump spectra taken by the NIRSpec show that the stars illuminating the gas clump are, indeed, the universe’s first-formed stars. Further, the spectra show that these stars are predominantly in the 50–500 solar masses category, with a significant fraction greater than 500 solar masses.

The luminosity of a star rises exponentially (to the 3.9 power) with its mass. A star with a mass 200 times the Sun’s mass will be ~1,600,000,000 times brighter than the Sun. A star 500 times more massive than the Sun will be about 6,000,000,000 times brighter! On this basis, we can determine that even if the GN-z11 central region contains only 20,000 stars, the light from those stars would be more than sufficient to illuminate the gas clump to the degree that Maiolino and his colleagues observed. Given that all big bang models predict the formation of 20,000+ metal-free stars (stars with no elements heavier than helium other than a trace amount of lithium) in multiple galaxies during the cosmic dawn, the population of bright galaxies observed by the JWST in no way poses a challenge to big bang creation models. 

Early Supermassive Black Holes
Maiolino and his team also found a second source of luminosity in GN-z11.10 They observed an extremely dense flow of gas into the nucleus of GNz-11. In this gas they detected ionized elements that clearly signify the existence of a giant black hole there, one that is aggressively accreting matter. They also observed powerful radiation spewing from the accretion disk surrounding the black hole. These observations enabled the team to calculate the mass of the black hole residing in GN-z11’s nucleus. That mass measures two million times our Sun’s mass. Thus, the nuclear black hole in GN-z11 falls into the “supermassive” category. (Astronomers classify any black hole more massive than one million solar masses as a supermassive black hole, or SMBH).

The event horizon around a black hole is a location at which the black hole’s gravitational attraction is so strong that not even light can escape it. Consequently, everything inside the event horizon appears black, while just outside the event horizon, matter is being converted into energy with 10–42% efficiency—the highest efficiency of any source in the universe. By comparison, this efficiency is 150–600 times greater than that of matter-to-energy conversion in the Sun’s nuclear fusion furnace. The brightest sources in the universe are the accretion disks just outside the event horizons of SMBHs (see figure 3).

The SMBH in GN-z11 is the most distant SMBH discovered to date. The presence of this ravenous SMBH and the brightness of first-formed stars in GN-z11 explain its luminosity, which is entirely consistent with the standard ΛCDM big bang creation model (where Λ stands for dark energy—the primary component of the universe—and CDM for cold dark matter—the second most dominant component of the universe).

Maiolino and his colleagues have confirmed that the first stars to form in the universe are likely very massive. They have also demonstrated that a dense clump of very massive stars in a cosmic dawn galaxy has a high probability of forming an SMBH. Therefore, it is not surprising that astronomers will find many bright cosmic dawn galaxies. The claim that the big bang model needs a major revision or points to new physics now appears to be nullified.  

One More Gift from the JWST
A fundamental prediction of all big bang models is the existence of three distinct star populations. Astronomers refer to stars formed during the most recent five billion years as Population I stars. These stars are characterized by a high abundance of elements heavier than lithium. Why? Because they formed from the ashes of stars that formed and burned up before these younger stars existed. Our Sun, for example, is a Population I star. 

Stars older than Population I stars contain fewer heavy elements because they formed from the ashes of stars that formed and burned up at earlier times in cosmic history. The earlier in cosmic history, the lower the abundance of elements heavier than lithium available in interstellar space. Astronomers call these stars Population II stars. Most globular cluster stars and most stars in the halos of galaxies are Population II stars. 

Population III stars are those that formed from the universe’s primordial gas: hydrogen, helium, and a trace amount of lithium. Astronomers had previously detected low-mass Population III stars in the halo of the Milky Way Galaxy.11 These stars did, indeed, form from the universe’s primordial gas; however, they took a very long time to fully form—hundreds of millions of years or more. Thus, before they began shining as nuclear-burning stars, their atmospheres had been polluted by the ashes of nearby very high-mass Population III stars, which had quickly burned up and exploded, sending their ashes into interstellar space.

Until now, though, astronomers have lacked the telescope power to detect these “metal-free” Population III stars or to detect the universe’s primordial gas. In fact, many astronomers have expressed doubt that the JWST possesses the necessary observing power to make such a detection. Maiolino’s team has now raised hopes that the JWST can make this detection. The team’s two papers end with a call for follow-up observations of GN-z11 to affirm their findings and to detect similar cosmic dawn galaxies. Given the importance of their findings, such observations likely will be forthcoming soon.

Philosophical/Theological Implications
For thousands of years, the Bible has stood alone in describing the fundamental features of the big bang.12 No other cosmic origin model has been subjected to as many independent, rigorous tests as the big bang.13 Thanks to the power of the JWST and the research efforts of Maiolino and his team, the big bang has passed yet another set of tests. Their success provides still greater evidence to support the biblical claim that a Causal Agent beyond space and time created our universe and exquisitely designed it so that billions of humans can reside on our planet and develop a technologically advanced civilization. Their success also confirms the Bible’s power to predict, accurately, future scientific discoveries. This power affirms the supernatural inspiration and accuracy of the Bible, with its assurance of God’s desire and capacity to redeem fallen (as in self-serving, self-exalting) humanity.14

In the twenty-first century, sometimes referred to as the “post-truth” era, people in growing numbers have begun to distrust science, scientists, and centuries’ worth of scientific research findings. Cases in which scientific data have been manipulated or misrepresented for political or ideological purposes have led people around the world to question even the most firmly established facts. Today, a shocking number of people stand behind the claim that the world and all our solar system planets are flat bodies. Many claim that NASA astronauts never set foot on the Moon or that the glorious images captured through space telescopes are fake.  

A fundamental principle undergirding all scientific disciplines and endeavors is under attack. Various individuals, for reasons other than scientific ones, are suggesting that the laws and constants of physics may not be invariable at all times and places throughout the universe. They question the very foundation of the scientific method and, thus, the basis for all scientific knowledge. 

My purpose in writing today is to counter this alarming antiscience trend by providing a thorough review of the latest, most firmly established measurements and observations upholding and solidly affirming the case for unchanging physical laws. At the same time, these findings attest to what the Bible declared thousands of years ago, a declaration that became a major stepping stone in my journey toward trust in God and his Word.

The Bible, in fact, gave and still gives impetus to investigating the natural world and trusting what our investigation reveals. It seems no accident of history that the Scientific Revolution exploded out of Reformation Europe. That’s when and where, for the first time, the message of the Bible became more widely known to the world.

Recent Experimental Affirmations of Unchanging Physical Laws  
The fine-structure constant quantifies the strength of the electromagnetic force interactions among elementary charged particles. Laboratory experiments using single-ion optical clocks conducted over a span of 1 year showed that possible variations in the fine-structure constant could be no greater than 3.9 x 10-17/year.1 This determination represents the most stringent laboratory confirmation to date on the unchanging nature of the fine-structure constant.

Further evidence comes from a natural nuclear fission reactor that operated two billion years ago in what is now Oklo, Gabon. Calculations performed on fresh cores in the reactor, each with different uranium content, combined with measurements of the samarium-149 cross section and the ratios of samarium-147 to samarium-149, established that changes in the fine-structure constant2 and the strange quark mass3 over the past 2 billion years must be no greater than 1.0 x 10-17/year and 1.0 x 10-18/year respectively.

Three Japanese physicists conducted experiments on ultracold (140 microkelvin or 0.00014 °C above absolute zero) photoassociated 41K87Rb molecules. Their experiments, performed over a four-year period, showed that variation in the electron-to-proton mass ratio must be no more than 1.3 x 10-14/year.4 Experiments based on comparisons of Ytterbium+and Cesium atomic clocks established that the electron-to-proton mass ratio varied by less than 2.1 x 10-16/year.5 A team of ten British physicists using single-ion atomic optical clocks determined that variation of the electron-to-proton magnetic moment ratio must be less than 1.3 x 10-16/year.6

Just to be clear, each of these numbers from each of these tests comes as close to zero as technology allows or total confidence requires.

The Apollo Confirmations
On July 21, 1969, many of us who are old enough had the privilege of watching live, on television, as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set up a laser reflector on the Moon’s surface. Its purpose: to test gravitational theories (see figure 1). In 1971, the Apollo 14 crew placed a similar laser reflector at a different site on the Moon, and the Apollo 15 crew set up another. Theirs was a higher quality reflector, three times the size of the one installed by Armstrong and Aldrin (see figure 2). Figure 3 shows the locations on the Moon of the three laser reflectors.

Six observatories on Earth are capable of performing precise timing experiments by bouncing laser reflections off these Apollo lunar instruments: the McDonald Observatory in Texas, the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur in France, the Matera Observatory in Italy, and the Wettzell Observatory in Germany.

In a previous article, I explained how lunar laser ranging (LLR) experiments have demonstrated the veracity of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, a theory that is a cornerstone of cosmic origin models.7 These same experiments are useful for testing the variability of the gravitational force constant and the electron-to-proton mass ratio. The LLR experiments conducted over a 51-year period have yielded tight constraints on these two constants. They show that the gravitational force constant varies by no more than 1.5 x 10-14/year,8 and the electron-to-proton mass ratio, by no more than 4.5 x 10-14/year.9 Again, numbers so small as to be considered zero.

New Observational Tests of Physical Laws
Due to the finite, identical (to within fifteen decimal places),10 and accurately known velocities of light, neutrinos, and gravity waves, astronomers are able to test the constancy of the laws of physics throughout deep time. Astronomical observations provide direct measures of the characteristics and operation of the physical laws at any time during the history of the universe simply by focusing on astronomical objects at different distances from Earth. (The greater the distance of an astronomical object, the farther back in time astronomers observe the light, gravity waves, or neutrinos emitted by the object.)

Astronomers can measure the wavelength positions of certain spectral lines emitted by stars, galaxies, and quasars, observing where the spectral lines are shifted by interactions with electric and magnetic fields. Such measurements yield the value of the fine-structure constant at the moment when light was emitted from the star, galaxy, or quasar.

Thousands of measurements made by astronomers show that the fine-structure constant in stars, galaxies, and quasars from 4 light-years to 12.9 billion light-years away differs by no more than 1 part in a million from its measured value on Earth today.11 These measurements imply that any variations in the value of the fine-structure constant would be no greater than 7.8 x 10-17/year over the past 12.9 billion years.

Similarly, astronomical observation of spectral lines in stars, galaxies, and quasars shows that variations in the electron-to-proton mass ratio must be no greater than 1.36 x 10-17/year over the past 7.34 billion years12 and no greater than 1.6 x 10-17/year throughout the past 12.9 billion years.13 The same kinds of observations establish that the gravitational force constant has varied by no more than 7.9 x 10-12/year over the past 11.0 billion years.14

Helioseismology observations of the Sun conducted over a 24-year period demonstrate that the gravitational force constant varies by no more than 5.2 x 10-14/year.15 Meanwhile, pulsar timing observations conducted over a 26-year period confirm that any changes in the gravitational force constant can be no more than 1.0 x 10-12/year.16  

Unchanging Physical Laws in the Earliest Moments of the Universe
Several papers published in theoretical journals suggest the possibility of small changes in a few of the constants undergirding the laws of physics. Such speculations point only to the extremely early history of the universe—the time before the first stars and galaxies formed, even before the occurrence of nucleosynthesis.

However, the observed effects of big bang nucleosynthesis imply that the fundamental constants undergirding the laws of physics possessed the same values then as physicists measure today in their experiments and that astronomers see in their observations of stars, galaxies, and quasars.17 These effects indicate that the laws of physics have remained unchanged since the universe was just one second old.

A recent article in Astronomy & Astrophysics18 indicates that a tiny change in the fine-structure constant at that very early moment would be conceivable IF there were no viable solution to what’s considered the “lithium problem.” It seems the amount of lithium astronomers have observed in stars falls short of the amount predicted to arise from big bang nucleosynthesis. Yet, as demonstrated in The Creator and the Cosmos, 4th edition, several possible solutions to the lithium problem do exist, and they require no variation in the value of any of the constants undergirding the laws of physics.19 The most likely of these solutions is the presence, in the early universe, of a small population of stars more massive (on average) and, consequently, much brighter than stars that exist today.

The bottom line is that everything we know and can measure about the physics of the universe and Earth, sometimes to the seventeenth and eighteenth places of the decimal, confirms—even shouts—that the laws of physics have not changed. Speculation about small changes in the laws of physics is strictly hypothetical, not based on knowledge and understanding. The epoch that remains, as yet, inaccessible to scientific observation and testing is the initial 0.00000000000000002 portion of cosmic history!  

Philosophical/Theological Implications
Thanks to their unwavering dedication and persistence and to the amazing technological tools in their hands, astronomers and physicists have affirmed the clear and repeated biblical claim that throughout the whole history of the universe and Earth, the laws of physics have remained fixed, that is, unchanged. Countless experiments and observations provide consistent affirmations of the Bible’s unique predictive power, a potent testimony to its divine inspiration and inerrancy.

No other holy book accurately describes multiple facts of nature centuries, even millennia, before they could be observed and tested by thorough and detailed scientific investigation. This biblical claim of unchanging physical laws and constants is one of the assertions, or “predictions,” that made a potent impression on me, as a curious science student beginning to investigate Christianity.

In Jeremiah 33, I read that God rebuked the Jews for doubting his promises. In Jeremiah 33:25, the prophet compares the certainty of God’s promises to “the fixed laws of heaven and earth.” The clear implication, here, is that just as the laws of physics, from thermodynamics to gravity to electromagnetism and more can be counted on to remain unchanging, so, too, can God’s promises be counted on.

Romans 8:20 says that the creation has been subjected to “frustration” or “futility.” Verses 21–22 declare that all of creation, the entire universe, was, and is, in a state of “slavery to decay” or “bondage to corruption.” What clearer depiction could be offered for the second law of thermodynamics? Ecclesiastes 1 and 3 and Revelation 21 support the claim that the whole of nature has been subjected to and continually experiences ongoing decay. 

Given the design features God built into the universe, this progression to disorder (entropy) is essential for physical life and physical work to be possible, but that’s another story, which I have told elsewhere.20 Romans 8:23 tells us that the laws of physics will remain pervasively in effect until God’s redemptive work is complete. The completion of this work will occur when the full number of humans God intends to redeem have embraced his offer of rescue in Christ.

In other words, the more we learn about the created realm, both the cosmos and ourselves, the stronger the basis for confidence that the biblical writers were supernaturally and accurately inspired21 by the One who brought the cosmos—and all of us—into existence.
