There’s a huge array of features people can exhibit, even within one family!

But where did all these different features originate? God created Adam de novo from the dust, and he later created Eve from material taken from Adam’s side.

Adam and Eve are the original pair from which all of humanity stems.

Did Adam and Eve Arise from Evolution?

At RTB, we reject macroevolution (cross-species changes such as apelike creatures evolving into humans).

We see evidence in the fossil record of hominid creatures existing before Adam and Eve, but we don’t believe these are ancestors to the original pair. Any creatures prior to Adam and Eve did not receive God’s “breath of life,” which was reserved exclusively for human beings.

Adam and Eve were supernaturally created and were the first human beings, unique from all past living creatures.

When Did Adam and Eve Exist?

Using biblical and scientific evidence, we can conclude that Adam and Eve existed approximately 100,000 to 150,000 years ago.

Where Was the Garden of Eden?

The Garden of Eden was likely located in the modern Persian Gulf region. Genesis 2 specifically mentions the Tigris, Euphrates, Pishon, and Gihon rivers.

Only the first two of these four rivers still flow, but, prior to the last ice age, all four waterways flowed into the Persian Gulf. Thus, we estimate that the Garden of Eden was located somewhere within this region.

It’s important to note where the garden was located because human appearances can vary greatly, depending on where an individual lives. Let’s keep this location in mind when we go over the specifics of their physical characteristics later.

Didn’t Adam and Eve Basically Look Like Me?

As we discuss Adam and Eve’s appearance, let’s be reminded of a common problem we face as humans: recency bias. Recency bias can cause us to prioritize recent information and events over historical ones. As such, we’re quick to assume that historical figures like Adam and Eve looked like us.

But realistically, things, events, and people of the past are often quite different from the current world. We should be mindful to look past our biases to see what the evidence says.

What Did Adam and Eve Look Like According to the Bible?

When we open our Bibles, we won’t find any passages outlining the exact physical appearance of Adam and Eve. But we can use Scripture to draw some reasonable conclusions about several of their characteristics.

Let’s review the basic story of Adam and Eve.

In the Beginning, God Created . . .

Genesis 1 and 2 outlines the creation of the universe and our earth. Within the creation story, we see that God formed Adam from the dust of the earth.

God saw that it was “not good for the man to be alone,” and so he created Eve from the man’s side (Genesis 2:18). They were the world’s first married couple.

Adam and Eve serve as representatives for all of humanity. However, we do see that they begin to wear clothing to cover their nakedness as a result of their sinfulness.

This sinfulness caused spiritual death to be passed on to all subsequent human beings, meaning we all have a brokenness that—without Christ—keeps us separated from God (Romans 5:12).

What Does Science Say About Adam and Eve’s Appearance?

We can’t scientifically conclude the exact physical characteristics of Adam and Eve. The shape allows for efficient inhalation, and it keeps the inhaled air at the same temperature as the environment.

Interestingly, in colder climates (such as in Europe), many people have longer and narrower noses. This shape allows the inhaled air to be warmed and humidified before entering the lungs.

In looking at each of these features, it’s amazing to see the level of intricate design God displayed for each unique person and environment!

Hair

Adam and Eve probably had black hair that was tightly curled in texture. The genetic mutations that cause red hair and blonde hair didn’t appear in European populations until about 30,000 and 17,000 years ago, respectively. So, it’s reasonable to think Adam and Eve had dark hair.

Additionally, science has shown us that the first human hair was curly. Tight curls are advantageous for those living near the equator, as the hair provides better insulation of the head and protection from the sun.

How Tall Were Adam and Eve?

The scientific record shows that the first Homo sapiens were about 5.5 feet in average height. Though modern humans are taller, on average (likely due to better nutrition), Adam and Eve were most likely about 5.5 feet like the ancient Homo sapiens.

Did Adam and Eve Have a Belly Button?

Belly buttons indicate where a person’s umbilical cord was attached during fetal development. This cord allows babies to get oxygen and nutrients from the mother as they grow in the womb.

Since Adam and Eve were created from the dust and from Adam’s rib, respectively, there’s no reason to think they had a belly button.

Notably, Adam and Eve’s children (such as Cain, Abel, and Seth), who were carried and birthed by Eve, would have had belly buttons.

Clothing in the Garden

When Adam and Eve were created, they were naked and didn’t wear any clothing.

But when they ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (humans’ first act of sin and rebellion toward God), they both died a spiritual death. This fall into sin caused them to feel shame for their nakedness, and they covered themselves with fig leaves. God later provided them with clothing made of animal skins (Genesis 3).

Scientists have learned that the origin of body lice, a parasite that resides in clothing, can be traced to about the time that modern humans emerged. This remarkable discovery helps scientists pinpoint the first use of clothing among humans.

What Did Adam Look Like?

In addition to the characteristics we described above, we know that God created both male and female. This distinction in sex is necessary so that mankind could accomplish God’s command to fill the earth (Genesis 1:28).

It’s reasonable to infer from Scripture that Adam was created as a fully mature male, even though the Bible doesn’t specify his age. It seems that he would have needed the physical and mental capacity of an adult to perform his jobs in Eden (tending the garden and naming the animals).

Do Men Have One Fewer Rib Than Women?

No. Some biblical translations specify that Eve was created from Adam’s “rib.” However, the original Hebrew claims Eve was created from tzela, which can translate to “side.”

Therefore, it’s unnecessary to assume that Eve was created specifically from Adam’s rib. But no matter what Bible translation you read, the primary takeaway should be that God created Eve from a part of Adam, symbolizing their oneness as a husband-and-wife pair. That means, Adam wasn’t left without a rib. Ribs can regenerate themselves in a matter of months.

What Did Eve Look Like?

Similar to Adam, it’s reasonable to conclude that Eve was created as a fully mature woman. Upon seeing Adam working alone in the garden, God realized that Adam needed a suitable helper.

So, he created Eve physically able and prepared to help Adam care for the garden and populate the earth.

Some Takeaways from the Life of Adam and Eve

The story of Adam and Eve carries significant impact not only for Christians but also for all people. Their life outlines the power of God, his creation abilities, and his purposes for humanity. Their story also reveals how sin and rebellion affected humanity’s relationship with God.

However, despite humanity’s fall, there’s also great hope found in exploring this topic. Though Adam and Eve sinned, God later gave us Jesus Christ, the second Adam, who lived a perfect life and bore the weight of our sin.

We learn of God’s plan of redemption through both Scripture and nature. Through careful study of Scripture and the world around us, we can gain confidence in God’s existence and attributes and in the truth of the Bible. We can also know how to be reconciled with him forever!

Dive Deeper

If you want to know more about this topic, be sure to check out Who Was Adam? for a deep dive into the scientific and biblical background on Adam and Eve!

Have you ever wondered where all of humanity’s physical diversity actually came from?
