Suffering has a way of knocking the wind out of us, and sometimes more. But pain is not the absence of God<\/a>. It’s the very place he meets us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes human suffering results from people’s own sinful choices, poor decisions, or intentional recklessness. But what about when innocent people suffer, like children with a terminal illness or victims of mass shootings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are hard questions and it can be difficult to see why a good God created so much suffering. The good news is that the Bible teaches us much on this subject of suffering in the natural world and the confidence we can have in God’s love for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At times, though hard to grasp, suffering is prescriptive. It doesn\u2019t just happen<\/em>; it shapes<\/em>. It strengthens what\u2019s weak, softens what\u2019s hard, and draws us closer to the heart of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post, we won\u2019t just look at suffering through the lens of experience. We\u2019ll explore it through the eyes of faith<\/a>, medical perspectives, and a compassionate God who never wastes our wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why God Allows Suffering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

God allows suffering because it plays a role in his bigger plan\u2014a plan that includes helping us grow, shaping our character, drawing us closer to him, and preparing us for our future careers in the new creation that is described in Revelation 21\u201322.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what does that mean exactly, and how can we be so sure of God’s goodness<\/a>. Let’s explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain and Suffering Medically<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pain isn\u2019t pointless. Though it wounds, it also warns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medically, pain and suffering serve an important biological function. They signal injury or imbalance. Without it, the body falls silent when it needs to speak most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such is the case with leprosy. Nerve endings numb, injuries go unnoticed. Pain disappears, and damage multiplies. The body begins to break down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emotional grief also has physiological roles. Emotional pain can draw people to seek help, build relationships, and grow in resilience. Like inflammation triggers healing, emotional pain often pushes us to reach out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These systems aren\u2019t signs of a cruel God. They reveal something deeper: even in a fallen world, we are still fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Character Produces Hope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just as physical stress strengthens bones, spiritual and emotional challenges grow perseverance, character, hope (Romans 5:3\u20134), and prepare us for future ministry opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God doesn\u2019t allow pain without purpose. And he never allows it without his presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus Christ didn\u2019t sidestep suffering<\/a>; he embraced it. He bled. He wept. He carried the full weight of human trauma on his shoulders. The whipping. The nails. The betrayal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gets it. Because he lived it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now he walks through it with us. \u201cWhen you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you\u201d (Isaiah 43:2\u20133).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some argue that suffering is a product of natural selection or thermodynamic decay. But anyone who\u2019s known deep grief knows better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s too much ache in the human experience, too much evil, too much love, too much longing, for it to be explained by random processes alone. If pain is real (and it is), and justice matters (and it does), then the world must be more than dust and decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which means there must be Goodness. A Moral Lawgiver. A God who stands against evil and who will one day make all things right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffering doesn\u2019t disprove God’s existence. It points us straight to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Christian, suffering doesn\u2019t just point to God; it draws us to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffering with Purpose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As 1 Peter 3\u20134 attests, suffering is part of the Christian journey. If you follow Jesus, you will face suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? Because when we go against the grain of a fallen world, we get splinters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But pain isn\u2019t wasted. It\u2019s how Romans 8:28 is proved true: \u201cIn all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul reminds us: \u201cWhat has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel\u201d (Philippians 1:12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our trials aren\u2019t detours. They\u2019re divine appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when life gets hard, we hold this hope: \u201cOur present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us\u201d (Romans 8:18). \u201cFor our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory . . . \u201d (2 Corinthians 4:17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffering as Discipline and Love<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not all suffering is persecution. Some is a consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sin leaves bruises. Disobedience has fallout. And if we think God will simply let it slide, we\u2019ve misunderstood his love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because love doesn\u2019t ignore. Love disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like a parent who guides a child, when we disobey God, he lovingly redirects his own\u2014not with condemnation, but correction. As Scripture reveals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
