The church is the community of all believers in Jesus Christ, called out by God to worship him, grow together, and share the gospel<\/a> with the world. The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia<\/em>, which means “called-out ones”\u2014people set apart to follow Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding the meaning of the church helps us see that we’re talking about people, not buildings. The church is God’s people, not a place. It’s a called-out community (ekklesia<\/em>) that worships, grows, serves, spreads the message of Jesus, and \u201cteaches them to obey\u201d all he commanded (Matt. 28:20). When we use the term ekklesia<\/em>, we’re talking about people who’ve been adopted into God\u2019s family and gathered together for God’s purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church is also distinct from the kingdom of God or what Jesus refers to as \u201cthe kingdom of heavens\u201d in Matthew’s Gospel. Here’s the difference: the church can grow and be built, but God’s kingdom is revealed and manifested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who become believers participate in the ongoing growth of the church both in numbers and in spiritual maturity. The kingdom of God is already established and is progressively revealed through Jesus as its king and through the power of the Spirit, to the glory of the Father<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the Christian Church Is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The church connects believers across the world. When people come together around a common mission\u2014like following Jesus and learning to live out his commands\u2014they create bonds that are stronger than just friendship or shared interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meaning of \u201cchurch\u201d extends beyond what we can see with our eyes. There’s a visible part (the people we worship with each week) and an invisible part (all believers everywhere, including those who have died and are with Jesus). Scientists who study group dynamics have found that organizations work best when members understand they’re part of something bigger than themselves. This research harmonizes with the biblical teaching that each local congregation is part of the worldwide body of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the church when it comes to membership? It’s everyone who has genuinely put their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation<\/a>. This includes people from every nation, race, age group, and background. It includes people who lived hundreds of years ago and believers who are alive today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Aristotle to the scientists who study human communities today, many have observed that the strongest groups are those united around shared core values rather than superficial similarities. The church demonstrates this principle\u2014believers from completely different cultures and backgrounds find deep unity through their shared faith<\/a> in Jesus. The church is open to anyone who believes in Jesus, regardless of their past mistakes or current circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Global and Local Church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Understanding what a church is gets even more interesting when we look at the difference between the global church and the local church. Both are important, but they serve different purposes in God’s plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This connection helps explain how Christians can feel a bond with believers in other countries, even when they don’t speak the same language or share the same culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you’re naturally outgoing or more quiet, whether you’re good with words or better with actions, God has a place for you in his church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studies on group participation show that organizations are strongest when every member feels valued and knows how to contribute. The church works the same way\u2014it needs every believer to use their gifts and participate in the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
